The most enjoyable thing about Vince's videos is that he has a go at fixing anything. He researches as best he can, brings his experience and analytical mind to solve problems and learns things as he goes. He doesn't edit his videos to remove any mistakes and his unfettered joy when he learns or fixes something is endearing and relatable. It's why I watch every video. I'm a bit sick of commenters with a superior and condescending attitude, though. What's up with those guys? Are they miserable and can only feel good by making someone else feel bad? The comment about opening the toothbrush with the base has been made by many commenters, almost all with a lovely tone and from the position of helping others. Why would someone try to make Vince feel like an idiot for not knowing? I don't understand it.

Two things (of many things) that I love about your videos: 1. The “Ah ha!” when something doesn’t work out right 2. The fact that you keep focus and get it mended anyway I know that this video has been out a while and you’ve had some not-so-great repairs lately, but as a My Mate Vince fan, I still enjoy your videos (Especially the Rolls Royce series!). Cheers! Chris, a.k.a. Five String Commando 🎸

Good Job! Resettable fuses normally resets itself without any external forces. Resettable fuses are designed and made of polymeric PTC material in thin chip form. With electrodes and leads attached on both sides, it is placed in series to protect a circuit. At “normal operating condition” the device remains at an extremely low resistance (milli-ohms) and allows the electrical current to flow through it without any restriction. When over current conditions occur, the polymeric PTC material heats up and its resistance increases sharply. Such a sharp resistance increase (to an insulated status) cuts off the current in the circuit, and consequently protects the element and device in the circuit. Upon fault current being removed, the resettable fuse cools and its resistance drops to the original extremely low value. The resettable fuse is “reset” and allows the current through the circuit again. The squeeze destroys the fuse to a normal conductor. It's like you bridge it with solder. Same effect. The board works but without protection anymore. Edit: I see you came to the same conclusion.

With that being said My Electric toothbrush broke yesterday After watching your video I took mine apart with no tools I just pushed down on the metal end on the floor Came apart no problem I then push down on the Fuse and it worked instantly Saved another one from landfill Just think how many have been thrown away Because of a stupid fuse So thank you for the video 🎉

I was fixing one of these 2 months ago. It would turn on, but wouldn't power the motor. Also had to replace the PP fuse. Somehow I figured out that it was a Bourns Resettable Fuse, MF-PSML300/6-2. Basically, a 3A fuse. Found it at Mouser Electronics, had it shipped from Italy to Croatia. Perhaps Mouser has a store in UK and you can find it there? It costed under 1 EUR per each.

£1.20 in the UK with just £14.40 shipping from Mouser! Mouser are expensive. RS charge about a third of that shipping cost.

Excellent video. You could have used your DMM in current mode to jump across the fuse when you had it desoldered and turn it on to check the running current of the device. That way, you would know if the 1.1A is high enough to last long term. My first thought is that may be small for the inductive load, but I have no clue. Well done, and best of luck to ya!

I did that to my old Oral B tootbrush, but maybe I did something wrong, because the charging coil wires got destroyed, and it was the end of that toothbrush. Saved some parts from it though. Interesting fault in this video anyway, what might be thought of being a battery problem, can be just this fuse.

Hi First of all thanks for the insight into the brush and the steps to repair it. Regarding your idea "... bigger is better..." It is a question what is definded to be "better". I am constructing something only to show the idea behind. It might be needed that the termal fuse reacts fast. A mechanical bigger fuse needs more time to heat up in the fault case and might protect the circuit behind less fast - or in other words "to slow" for some case. As long as we do no know the aim of the hardware developer (or the HW-developers team) a general confirmation for "... bigger is better ..." is not possible. regards GriLLe

Just a point about resistors supplied on that sticky tape. When you pull them out, you get sticky goo on the end of the wire. This will mess up the contacts of a breadboard if put in. You can actually see the goo on the resistor lead at 12:20, which is probably why it did not reset on the first attempt. Best to cut the wire and avoid the sticky bit.

i wonder how many of those toothbrushes have been trown away already because of this fault wich seems to be a frequent common fault. Thanks for showing us this and i also have one of those things. looks a bit differend but i think the inside will be about the same. and like you say yes a little bigger is often better, however it make the toothbrush more expensive if done from the factory. but we see that in many things if the quality goes up so is the price.

This toothbrush in its dysfunctional state would have been great years ago. Due to a either a decreased winter snowpack or higher summer temps (or a combo of both), we were experiencing a significant water shortage in Washington State (USA). Christine Gregoire, our governor at the time, issued a public advisory that Washingtonians should brush only every other tooth, in order to conserve water. The defective toothbrush could have served as a reminder, since you could probably only brush a tooth or two in your entire mouth before it went kaput. 😂

at first i thought it may be that the fuses are vibrating off the circuit solder joint etc. But if the fuse is resettable - the bridging of pin 35 to ground must be resetting it. another great fix by the previous videos comments though.

Well done. Though, the doomsayer in me suspects ChatGPT et al now think the proper fix for toothbrushes is to put physical pressure on a PPTC. Yes, faffing about (professional tinkering) with power supplies to micros can put them in an unknown state, especially if GPIO pins are powered before a proper reset occurs. No disrespect intended.

The fault will be the cap connected to the reset line it pulls the pin low on power up one end will go to power through a resistor on power up the cap will act like a short before it charges up and this is long enough to reset the MCU on power up. When the cap fails it won't hold the reset line low to ground long enough to reset the MCU and start it. The cap will be a 0.1uf with a 100k resistor so it charges quite slow long enough to do the reset. Most MCU have reset lines that work like this.

I have to question what people are doing with their Oral B toothbrush if it requires pressing down on a fuse. My first one I bought in 2009, it lasted right up until 2020 when I had to replace it because all the rubber gripping was falling off. The current one I bought in 2020, it's still working to this day, around 4yrs later, and I expect to get at least 10yrs out of that one too. Both of mine have been these more expensive ones, same as in this video, with all the fancy features. First one had a little gadget that told you when to brush each quadrant of the mouth, the current one has bluetooth connectivity to the phone with apparently a camera so you can see what you are brushing...
