There's some good teaching going on at FAMU. Their pitch center improved tremendously in a week's time. Tone, phrasing, and overall technique is better. The overall balance is good, and the balance within the sections is good. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely! But you're on the right road. Euphoniums, thank you for keeping a characteristic, balanced, and round sound throughout. The high level of MUSICIANSHIP is apparent from the piccolos down to the percussion.

@FinestOfTheSouth2 жыл бұрын
Y’all are the most delusional fan base I’ve ever seen. Even more than SU. FAMU has lost MANY steps. They suck the soul, funk, and overall BLACKNESS out of everything they play now. This is not the FAMU I remember from years ago. That Love’s Train arrangement was dryer than prison one-ply toilet paper on a cold winter night. FAMU has good balance and they play with mediocre dynamics. That’s it. That’s not the totality of “good musicianship.” What about the feel of the song? They’ve seem to have forgotten that part of what makes HBCUs special is how they engage a crowd by making them FEEL the music. I didn’t feel anything from FAMU, and haven’t for years. They come to every performance playing the same 5-6 tunes and y’all go crazy. I know you’re tired of hearing the same stuff just as I know they’re tired of playing the same things. It’s one thing to bring something new to the SWAC, that’s fine. But what they’re bringing is actually a disgrace to HBCU show band. FAMU should stop commercializing and whitewashing their sound to appeal to white people and get back to their roots.
@CoreyJizzle2 жыл бұрын
@@FinestOfTheSouth Disgrace to an HBCU show band? Whitewashing sound to appeal to white people? Yikes. No disrespect, but most JSU (and SU's) technique from a show band standpoint was copied from FAMU, so the notion they're trying to win over whites is bad. FAMU is who they've always been. They ain't changing their style to curry favor with me, you or white folks. Arrangements that isn't just screamers but also feature piccolos and woodwinds, and the lows and the middles of a song pleases black listeners just as much as an all brass band that only cranks. I love and respect power but it isn't an entire show. In fact, if that's the only distinguishing aspect to your performance, you're coming up short and you're selling the audience short. The Boom's sound was engaging last night. They cranked and it hit. But overall, their field show was less entertaining when compared to FAMU's.
@FinestOfTheSouth2 жыл бұрын
@@CoreyJizzle and I still think you’re delusional. There’s nothing entertaining about FAMU anymore. They are beyond predictable. I was sitting with a friend and we were able to call out by name what songs they were going to play and in what order. Y’all use this same tired argument about “musicality” as if the average HBCU fan really cares about the intricacies of musicianship. We don’t. We care if it sounds good, if it’s powerful, and if it’s entertaining. There’s nothing entertaining about playing the same cycle of songs for YEARS. And you’re not going to convince me that FAMU can’t source a better arranger with all of the “prestige” you claim they have. They are boring, and are going to get embarrassed at every 5th quarter if they don’t come with a new book with some arrangements that sound like they were made for a BLACK band. And if you want me to be truthful, FAMU doesn’t always play with a balanced sound, and consistency is key. What they do is have an arranger that writes music as if he’s writing for a wind ensemble and not a 300 piece marching band. Give me a break. This band needs to get their heads out of white people’s asses and go back to doing what makes them great. Because this predictable bullshit they’ve been doing since the Robert Champion tragedy ain’t it.
@CoreyJizzle2 жыл бұрын
@@FinestOfTheSouth Be careful, because the criticism cuts both ways. If you wanna slam FAMU for a predictable book, keep that same energy for JSU's predictable, eternally boring field routine today, which I can call out right now and be 90 to 100% accurate. Across the field, line drill, playing "Get ready"; A 80's-90s era tune for the dancing girls to shake their cheeks and hit a split; a tiny bit of dancing, perhaps with mockery or diss; finished with We Rock the House. I'll give credit where credit is due: took them a long while, but JSU finally got rid of the little dude twirling flames with the shiny tight sequins. Probably saved the university a ton of money in insurance. They also resisted trotting out grossly overweight girls for the dance routine, unlike SU, ASU and others. Mostly.
@CoreyJizzle2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Robert Champion tragedy molly-whopped FAMU and it did set them back in a major way. Last year, was the first time in perhaps 10 years that, the band sounded remotely close to the great editions of 1990s and early 2000s and truth be told, they're still in a rebuilding mode. Changing bad culture and overcoming non-supportive administrators takes time. And yet, while FAMU was down, what did JSU do? For one, they and most of the SWAC, gave up on quality, original, creative field shows and normalized out of tune, overblown rap music battles in the 5th as the beginning, middle and end to a marching band performance. I get it. Field shows are hard; Yakking rap chords with a loud tuba breakdown is preferred in this era. And it definitely gets your KZbin weight up. No shade, get your clicks however.

@@DScott2010 logistically it just wasn’t possible for JSU to play in Houston. That would’ve meant traveling three weeks in a row. To Houston, Miami, and then Memphis. These are students first and traveling that much can be overkill, not to mention very costly for the band program.
