I have used an evaporator type humidifier, for years in the winter, when the wood stove is being used. No problems. About 5 days ago, my wife turned on an ultrasonic type humidifier to help boost the humidity. About 2-3 days later I noticed the dreaded orange flame on the stove. I checked over the stove, top to bottom, it looked fine. I googled the problem and found a couple articles explaining this situation. I promptly turned off the ultrasonic humidifier, waited a few hours, and voila, the return of the blue flame. Good video.

I have been using a similar humidifier with RO water for a week without issue. This morning I used tap water and noticed the orange flame at noon. I was totally baffled until I ran across your video. I switched back to reverse osmosis water and the flame went back to blue. Thanks for posting this. You're my hero.

Max REY, I'm glad you like the video and found it useful. With all the great responses to the video, I have to slightly alter my findings to say that the ultrasonic humidifier is causing the minerals in the water to become airborne and turn the stove flame orange. Initially, I had thought it was the silver from the humidifier, but it seems that any ultrasonic humidifier will do the same thing. As for "what did i do to solve it?" nothing; the flame is still orange, and it doesn't bother me to see it that way. I'm glad I am able to save people the expense of calling a service man in to check the stove!

Thanks for the post. I almost bought a new regulator for my gas range. Distilled water does the same thing by the way. I believe that it is the moisture in the air that causes it.

I just ran into this, too. I would never have guessed that my humidifier could have such a dramatic effect on my stove from twenty feet away! Mine has no "White dust" reduction and our water is pretty hard, so we're probably pumping even more minerals into the air. I had already encountered it last summer, and assumed it had something to do with the ambient temperature or the gas supply. Then when it happened again this winter, I started asking around. I never would have believed it. THANKS!

I so appreciate this video! I had a nosebleed last night so I brought my Air O Swiss humidifier into the kitchen this morning. I had orange flames on my gas stove. I called my cleaning person to ask what she used to clean the stove and was getting ready to call the gas company when I found this. Hilarious and wonderful. You are the best . . . six years later!

Wow, called the gas company today (who were not concerned) on why my fireplace and stove top gas flames are orange. I'm glad I lucked up on You Tube with your video. I purchased a replaced humidifier using boiled water and have run it all day. I'll check later if the burner turns back blue now that I got the humidity level in my home to "ok" on my weather monitor. I really appreciate this video. Thanks!

Flame of my stove looked more orange lately, not enough blue. I searched on Google and scared me because I found “could lead to carbon monoxide buildup in your home”. 🤢 I read more and found this video! My defuser is just small 150ml size and not fancy like this one. But I saw the different of flame color after I turned off defuser. Thank you so much for uploading this video.😊

Lately all burners on our stove suddenly had an orange flame. Jumped onto Google for a solution. Read half a dozen sites and thinking we better call a service guy quickly. Then found your video. My wife had turned on a humidifier in our kitchen area a day earlier. Also happens to be Air-O-Swiss with a Silver generator. After seeing your video, we turned it off, waiting the following day and the burners are all now a regular blue flame. Who would had known?!! Thank you for your video!

INCREDIBLE!! You nailed this one! Yesterday, in my living room I plugged in my inexpensive VICKS COOL MOISTURE HUMIDIFIER. Today I had the orange flames! I turned off the humidifier and venting out my kitchen for several hours. Then I turned my burners on and they were back to normal. From time to time, my tap water smells like chlorine, and I noticed that CHLORINE smell before I filled up the humidifier. It must have a lot to do with the water used. Your video was much appreciated. You saved me an expensive service call for my Dual Fueled Wolf Range. THANK YOU SMART MAN!

I use that one too but I fill it with either distilled or filtered water. It is expensive to do it this way so the next time I am going to use tap water, leave cap off bottle overnight and it should be ok for the humidifier.

As others have rightly commented… It is the sodium in the ultrasonic mist that is burning yellow in the spectrum. You can confirm this by running distilled water through the humidifier without any change in the color of the flames. Best to you and here's to 2021 being much better than 2020!!

Genius. Never would have thought of that. My humidifier is in my conditioned attic and i fill it with carbon block filter water. Another comment said they used distilled water and it still changed the flame color. This is our first winter in our renovated house. the stove is new. If it changes back when spring rolls around and i stop using the humidifier then it will be confirmed. Edit: Just thought the gas fireplace flame isn't affected. Oh. That has an outside air source as it is direct vented.

Thanks! I would have never made the connection but the timing is exactly correct. Don't you love how curious, average people can figure things out and then share the info? I called the gas company and they said I probably needed a professional to come clean my stove and possibly adjust the air intake and I should be cautious of potential carbon monoxide. I read another interesting explanation that said the municipal water companies usually add some sodium to soften the water and ultrasonics split the sodium off. I remember from elementary chemistry that sodium burns yellow. BTW I live in a 5500 square foot house and the ultrasonic is in our bedroom at the opposite end of the house.

Thanks, I kept reading that my stove needed cleaning or adjustment but all 4 burners turning orange in the course of one day seemed too strange for it to be that. My humidifier was running all winter but today is the first warm day in a while and my house humidity climbed to 60% Usually it's closer to 40% with the furnace running so much. So there you go, you helped me figure out my problem. Thanks!

New info! Gas range, only one year old. Suddenly today all the burners were burning totally yellow! Never happened before. We opened the kitchen door to let outside air in and tuned on the stove exhaust fan, then after 5 minutes the burners were turning bluish. I could not imagine what had happened. I saw this and the comments (which were very helpful) and realized that I ran my new essential oil diffuser on the clean cycle today. I used cleaning tablet in tap water and ran it on the continuous mode until it cut off. It is a very SMALL diffuser which works on the ultrasonic technology. It is in the bedroom on the other side of the house. Previously I had, for about a week, run the diffuser on intermittent mode with the bedroom door closed. Apparently the closed door and lower volume of mist had not caused any problems. But the cleaning process today sure did. So not only ultrasonic humidifiers, but also diffusers can cause yellow flames on a gas range. Who knew.

Thanks for putting this up, I recently experienced this and thought the stove had a problem. Its been quite cold the past few days, the air in my home felt very dry, I took out an older ultrasonic humidifier, ran it for two days, The air feels much better, but I did notice the orange flame after two days of humidifier use. Shut it off for twelve hours and the gas flame is the correct blue again. I do not think my humidifier touts any silver aspect to it.

I am so glad you made this video. I just bought a similar model from Air-O-Swiss (the one that holds 2 Gal and shiny front). I have this about 20 ft from my kitchen. My gas stove started making this weird orange glow and Nicor gas here stated that this could be due to excess humidity levels. One Amazon reviewer just simply removed the silver cartridge and put the cap on, assuming the water is clean and demineralized. If this stops the orange glow, then the Silver would have been the cause!!

I wish I knew about this before I hired a Sear's tech tell me the same thing for a $95+ visit. I have a cold mist humidifier several rooms away from the kitchen and sure enough my flames turn orange / yellow as a result. I never made the connection because I rarely used it. Therefore, I called for service thinking my air / gas ratio had to be adjusted. Not only does my stove not have any adjustments but it was my humidifier. The tech said my flames are burning something in the air. Thanks for the informative video. I just wish I found it before the service call.

Thanks, you solved my problem! It seems this happens with natural gas in the UK too. As an extra bit of information I have an air purifier as well, and if I run this after having the humidifier on for several hours it goes mental. The air quality light turns red and it runs at maximum speed, thus proving that the humidifier is putting out something else, other than water!

It does this with any humidity in the air. Flames burn orange when there is less oxygen available, and adding moisture to the air throws the fuel to oxygen ratio off. The air in your home is less dense.

Oh My! We replaced our old humidifiers with new technology of Ultrasonic Humidifiers. We (within 1 day) after turning them on, started experiencing yellow flames. Not having seen this video, we called the gas company (as we had just received a new supply of propane). They sent a tech and changed the gas, checked pressure, changed tanks and regulator. Still orange flames. They told us something was wrong with the range. We called the Frigidaire repair service and the tech came the next day. We replaced the regulator on the stove. He had seen this video and told us to unplug the humidifiers, but NO ONE had read the comments that explained the burning sodium reasoning. (The gas company had also seen the video.) We do have a water softener! We were using tap water! After leaving the humidifiers off for several hours, we are back to blue flames and will be using filtered, bottled water in our humidifiers. A $200 lesson learned....

I am glad the video is helpful. Although I'm not an engineer, I don't think the orange flame is a result of carbon monoxide, it's the silver that is being carried by the humid air. An orange flame could be caused by multiple reasons. I have 3 carbon monoxide detectors in my house, and not one of them has ever sounded. As for the stove's efficiency, an inefficient flame can be orange, but so can one with a foreign substance, as can be seen in any high school lab experiment. Good question.

Brilliant observation. I've noticed the orange flames as well, intermittently, but would have never connected the dots. FWIW, our humidifiers are the cheap $50 walmart (GE) brand. No silver. Just ultrasonic water vaporization. I think it's the additional hydrogen in the air? Who knows. Either way, it seems to be benign..

Cori, I'm glad you found a solution to your blue flame, and I agree that its not the silver in the water. When i initially posted this video (in 2011) no one knew what the problem was, not even the gas stove repairmen. And there was nothing on the internet about it. Finally, after my video the word got around that it was the humidifier. I think I was able to help a lot of people with the same problem.

It's not just the silver in the humidifier. For the first time today I ran my cool steam humidifier, which has tap water and scented oils in it, for the first time since putting in our gas stove five months ago. We had an electric stove before that. This morning our stove flames were blue, and the humidifier was turned on right after cooking breakfast. Almost four hours later, when we heated up lunch, the flames on all four burners were completely with orange flames, no blue at all. I was puzzled and looked on KZbin where I saw another video about humidifiers and gas burners. It is the humidifier, in general, that seems to be causing this issue for some people. I have now turned off my humidifier and will wait a bit to see if the flames on my stove return to blue, as I expect they should once the extra humidity has moved out of my home. It appears to be the humidity that is causing this problem, not necessarily what is in the humidifier.

A yellow flame is usually from reduced oxygen vs the gas to burn correctly, I suspect the moister is blanketing the area and reducing oxygen to the burners. I doubt it's the silver or such, imagine if you were really breathing in some silver particles?

I was really glad to find this video because I just bought a new humidifier yesterday and was wondering why all my flames are suddenly orange. Two questions: do you know if it is safe to have orange flames caused by the humidifier (since orange flames can be an indication of carbon monoxide) and do you know if this causes the stove to be more inefficient? I would like to continue using my humidifier, but not if I risk carbon monoxide poisoning and not if it's going to double my gas bill! Thanks.

I started using my Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier at night because when I run the AC it makes my eyes more drier than ever. I too was concerned about the gas flame on my stove turning more yellow-orange and just had the gas lady here to question it. She suggested I not run my humidifier and I said I need to so just shut the gas off the stove. I only use the top burners because I have a baker's rack next to it and can't open the oven door. I have a hot plate, large convection/toaster oven, crock pot and other electric appliances so why use the stove at all. I already shut the pilot light off to the gas space heater and I shut the bathroom door at night where my gas hot water is. I hate gas and are planning on moving and hope to fine a place without it. She says it is not dangerous but this is the first morning I woke up feeling slightly lightheaded and when I shut the humidifier off, I felt better so I rather listen to what my body is telling me instead. To each their own. Thanks for the video.

Older video I know but just this morning I turned on my stove to light a tea candle and the flame was a bright Orange. All burners were a bright orange. I have since discovered that humidity more then likely is the culprit. My kiddo had just recently been discharged from the hospital and breathing treatments have since become the norm, Three times daily every 6 hours with nebulizer . His hospital bed is situated in the family room that is part of the kitchen area. Although the flames returned to blue after a couple hours i'm kind of freaked out about it and am afraid to use the stove. This is what I found earlier that scared me.... Take note that in most County's/Cities that you can call your local gas co and they will come out free of charge to see whats up should you suspect a gas leak or anything related to gas, Some thing's (Minor) they will fix and other thing's advise for your own safety. "Turn off your humidifier: As strange as it may sound, humidifiers seems to turn gas range flames from blue to orange (see this video and this blog post). Turn off your humidifier to see if this makes a difference in your stove’s flame appearance. The danger of orange or yellow flames: Orange or yellow flames, or sooty flames, means you could have incomplete combustion happening, which could lead to carbon monoxide buildup in your home. There might be an air-gas mixture problem, or a problem with the gas pressure to the appliance. If you suspect this, turn off the gas supply to your appliance and leave your home. Contact a qualified gas technician or call your utility company to request someone come out to your residence to check it out. Remember, you cannot see or smell carbon monoxide, so it’s important to have carbon monoxide alarms placed throughout your home."

What a find! Noticed this on my gas range in the past few days, so googled and found this. I've only been using a humidifier for the same amount of time... And it's 3 floors up!! Would it have the same effect on my gas boiler?

OKAY, Truly great discovery; you have "apparently" outdone the experts (see below)... Is that really all there is to this issue? Are we still getting the same, less or more BTU's from the flame? If this process is changing the BTU's, don't you think that should be in some type of warning on the box of the device before you buy it? I noticed the change when I got an ultrasonic humidifier just a few weeks ago too for Christmas. I have called the local utility company out for them to do all their tests. (free of charge BTW) When I called to schedule the appointment and got transferred to 3 people, none of them were aware of anything causing this issue. Apparently they were all totally unaware of the vapor humidifier issue. THIS BLOWS MY MIND! Is'nt this the gas companies and the manufacture of the humidifier job to know?? I mean how long have these units been on the market and they still don't know about it? WOW! I mean W O W !!! Really? If this theory is correct, It really makes me wonder "conspiracy"... and i'm not usually in that group. It makes you wonder especially if these units degrade the BTU output of all your gas devices in the house & we are not getting the heat out of the gas we purchase that we used to. This could easily cost us thousands of dollars over the years and the Gas company is the one reaping it all. They really don't know about it at the highest levels? I think it's time to send an e-mail or two, to the higher levels... Does anyone have a temp gauge that is made to work at the normal temp of Natural & Propane gas being; this being 1960 & 1967 respectively? www.engineeringtoolbox.com/flame-temperatures-gases-d_422.html Although as long as the device is consistent we should be able to see what the effect if any this act to make your house more comfortable really costs. PLEASE RESPOND TO ME if you have this problem and especially if you have a temp guage that could be used to prove what's really happening when we use these units in our homes. Thanks! & please thumbs up this to keep it active...

If it's turning the burner flames orange, is it safe to breath in the vapors from the ultrasonic humidifiers? Scarey!!

I am hoping this is the "solution" aka cause of my orange flames recently! I just stood in the kitchen with the window open with the flame on though while waving air at it and it stays orange. I'll reply to this comment later if it turns back to blue. Thanks for the hope! haha

No, I am not promoting that humidifier. The reason I zoomed in was to show you which one I own in case you have the same one or a similar model. I am going to take an educated guess and say that any humidifier that uses the silver technology like this one will produce the same orange flame on a burning device.

WOW! I have the same stove and just bought a humidifier. Great video! But my question now, is it safe to use my stove this way?

DM R, if you dont have a humidifier and your stove is burning orange, I cannot tell you what's happening with it; I am not a professional tradesman. However, it sounds as if your stove is not burning correctly, and that could be very dangerous. If i were you, I'd call a gas stove repairman and get it looked at as soon as possible.

Identical happend to me , first use of new humidifier upstairs to wake up to dust in the bottom floor and orange flame. So what did you do to solve this using your existing humidifier? not sure if its the "silver technology" , I think its any type of ultrasonic. I have this one. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V7M9YQQ?ref_=cm_cd_al_qh_dp_t

No, the silver is not bad for humans (although I'm not a physician).
