I just got an Orange Pi 5 Plus, and I'm learning how to spring it to life. I am studying your video with great interest. Thank you for your excellence. You asked for help regarding a very small screw size to fasten down an m.2 device. I think it could be the small screw size that is on the bottom of the POSTS used to fasten down an m.2 SSD. One day on my Asrock motherboard, while trying to remove the small screw from an empty m.2 slot, the post unscrewed with the screw still stuck in the POST. The POST has an integrated bottom screw that is a VERY small diameter. My motherboard has a lot of very small holes in the m.2 slots to accommodate all the different m.2 lengths.

Thank you for the great video. The OPI5 is the new kid on the block but there is already a lot of activity regarding OS choices, use cases, and documentation. The one omission is on-board WiFi but that can be solved easily with a WiFi USB dongle. One huge feature over the RPi is M.2 storage but getting the OS image onto a NVME SSD can be a bit tricky. The 8gb OPI5 first came out with a price point of $85 but now has quickly risen to $145. Still a good price compared to the Rock Pi 5B or the Khadas Edge 2.

Orange Pi 5 and similar boards using RK3588 chips are much more superior to Raspbery Pi 4. Even the previous generation of RK, which is RK3399 was already superior, 3588 can be already used as a full-fledged desktop replacement for most of the tasks. As for the WiFi and Bluetooth you don't need to sacrifice the M.2 slot - you can just find a USB dongle which is compatible to Linux. And the las bit - you didn't need to flash the M.2 NVME drive with stock img you downloaded - you could have just clonned your SD card to it, using the same DD command. The only difference is that you would need to extend the SSD partition after that, to span all your 128 Gb drive and extend a filesystem, but that can be done with just two commands

Been sing mine for 3 weeks or so and it's a great little board that looks to see great pick-up for both purchase and development in 2023. Whilst I too would have liked to have seen WiFi and Bluetooth, at the price being paid, less likely to be futured. You can get both using a USB adapter, so you can still use an NVME drive too. USB-C gives video out too, so dual monitor support is available. I suspect that down the line they may bring out a new model with wireless connectivity but the price will reflect this. Bearing in mind that it has been in users hands for less than a month, more devs are showing interest. Official support though is almost non existent. The M.2 screw thing is a real pain and Orange Pi should either redesign the holes or supply a screw as part of the purchase.

Any suggestions for a particular trouble-free model of WiFi&BT over USB dongle?
@czerro1 Жыл бұрын
I'm still waiting to get mine, and will put it through it's paces, but from what I've heard and read, the utility of the NVME drive is fairly crippled by the PCI-E bandwidth. Such that it is only marginally better at best than any other media drive options. If that IS true, then most people should just throw something else in there like the wifi/BT addon that is incoming, or do it themselves with a bridge to a supported wifi/BT card for their OS. I know that's a downer, and it's worth testing to make sure, but everything on the spec sheet suggests that it's probably barely faster than any other storage solution. I think realistically...this might be a bit of a hoodwink, as people will find that it's simply more useful to use the slot for wifi/BT. Since it will take some work and research to figure out how...people will just buy the upcoming wifi/BT M2 addon that Orange Pi will release. Regardless...they kept the cost down on the board, and it's definitely impressive. I think the NVME slot is a dud though. It's essentially useless as a drive expansion, as it's limited at PCI-E 2. Most other media can support similar speeds. So, it's not a huge win. Then we get to what else we can put in there...and there just aren't very many options other than a wifi/BT adapter. If anyone has a great idea, as to what the nvme port can be used for, please explain. It looks pretty bad on investigation though. I can't really wrap my head around this. If the chipset only supports PCI-E 2...why put an NVME port on it at all? Why pretend it is for anything other than the yet to be released add-on card?
@magusonline Жыл бұрын
@@czerro1 oh damn that is good to now. So the speeds should be similar to the USB3 ports with an external drive? That brings me a sigh of relief then, a smaller dollar footprint for me :) As for why the nvme, it was mostly trying to keep the physical size of the whole setup as small as possible. My plan was to 3D print a case for it, with a VESA mount adapter so I could mount it behind my TV and use it as an upgrarded smart TV + emulation station

Those are 100% compatible and supported by both Linux and Windows, you get proper SATA ports, you can add RAM, expansion cards... I mean the OrangePi PC was cool when it was ~22e a few years ago, size is cool and it was a cool gadget for dedicated devices but nowadays you can't charge me more than 100e for a badly supported ARM when I can buy for the same price an old PC or a mini pc with a *Celeron. I have an OPi 5 plus with 16GB for a NextCloud server, but I can totally see going 32 for that application, as add-ons can hog a lot of RAM. I generally think that people are better off overspecing their RAM if they can, especially on SBCs. SWAP partitions tend to burn microSD or SSD life up. If you turn SWAP off, you need a beefy processor. If you leave it on you need a big SSD to wear level slowly. But the best option is to buy a big RAM pool so SWAP is rarely relevant and none of your components face permanent wear and you can have almost indefinite uptime.

Doesn't it make more sense to regenerate UUID on the NVMe drive instead of the SD card then you wouldn't need to worry about conflicts with any SD distribution? Not sure if that's more difficult or impossible but just asking..

32GB...I'm thinking ZFS. It will use all the RAM you can throw at it. Install an m.2 to SATA adapter to add a couple of HDDs, 3D print a case to hold it all together tidily...tada! You've got yourself a low-power file server.

If you're getting into NAS software it's usually FreeBSD right? Guessing that would need a FreeBSD distro compiled specifically for the board? Sounds cool interested to know how you're thinking of doing it.
@seanpalmer8472 Жыл бұрын
@@darkobelisk4076 I do like TrueNAS, and would prefer to use it; however, I don't think they support ARM. OMV would be a better starting point for NAS software. I've seen people build Raspberry-Pi-based NASes using OMV, so I'm sure it's possible on Orange Pi as well.

32Go RAM: yes, with Docker, were the CPU is not really important but available RAM is crucial. Anyway the 32Go version is not available.

First off I’ve got to say your video is by far the best explanation of how to set up this OP! I just picked up the latest and greatest Orange Pi 5B and there are some differences that have me stumped. I’m trying to set up Homebridge and be able to boot from the on board chip instead of the flash but here’s the main problem. This new OP 5B doesn’t have a port on the bottom for the M.2 mentioned here 7:15. Trust me as now I have an extra new, unused card if anyone needs one. 😂 But instead of a 16mb SPI Flash that you mentioned here 13:25 there’s now a 256GB eMMC flash. So my question(s) is/are is it possible to but both the image to boot and the Homebridge image on this drive? Do I partition it somehow or just put the OP boot image onto it and use the removable flash card with the Homebridge image to operate try to get my smart home devices into HomeKit? It’s times like this I wish I knew more about how these things work. I appreciate any help or feedback.

Great video like always... I do have a question. With the PI I added a POE board. Are you able to add that to this board? Plus one other thing your 3D printer you talk about can you share which one you have? I'm looking to get into 3D printing. Keep up the great work. One more thing do you plan on updating UDM-Pro setup for 2023? A lot of changes have been done just thought it would be good well when you have time.

I can't seem to find a 32GB ram version for sale. I would love once since I currently run around 25 docker containers as my home server across 4 X rpi4's. Would be nice to consolidate some of that.

From their site, the 32 GiB version is coming sometime in the undefined future. Possibly Orange Pi don't have the larger RAM chips they need for 32GiB and can't get them at a price they think will work. With CNY coming up I suspect it'll be at least a month away.

I want an Orange Pi 5 with 32GB of RAM to run the GrandOrgue organ simulator with any sample sets. GrandOrgue (and Hauptwerk) keep uncompressed samples for every single pipe in RAM, which requires 16-32GB of RAM for large organs. There's also some Pi colocation/hosting companies that also support other SBC's where the NVMe slot & extra RAM could be useful.

The two points to consider is lack of inbuilt wifi, and that the official kernel sources for it are only at 5.10 Armbian has some later ones I think, but they've setup they're build system so you have to build the whole os instead of just being able to build the kernel on it's own which is kinda dumb

I have to say , the pi 4 with it's usb boot makes it a lot easier. (external ssd in a usb 3 housing , and it FLIES!) image is installed the same way as you do to an micro sdcard.

you can never have too much ram for AI. running some models can take a lot of ram and 16GB only covers 90% of use cases.
