Orange Rocker 15 Terror | Review | Demo | Amplifier
British amplifier legends, Orange unveiled some exciting additions to their range at this year's NAMM. The new compact amp line includes the Brent Hinds signature Terror head, the Rocker 15 Terror head and Crush Mini amps. Nick Jennison got grips with the later of the two new releases in this issue.
Orange Rocker 15 Terror
Capable of 15, 7, 1 or 0.5 Watts of output, the Rocker 15 Terror is the head only version of the enormously popular Rocker 15 Combo that moves seamlessly from home, to the studio, to the stage. Finally, a small, two channel, bedroom-friendly all-valve amp that you can legitimately gig.

This is an excellent amp demo, because you've clearly spent a bit of time with the amp to understand how it sounds. I'm sick of amp demos where it starts with everything at 12 and tweak, getting facts wrong and not knowing that most players have a sound in mind already. Testing the loop and an OD shows that you think of how players will use this amp. And the playing is cracking.

Take heed of his advice at 1:20 - I got the combo with a 1*10 speaker which is light weight and that's fine for at home but you just can't beat the 12" speaker. Wish I got the amp head now !!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the combo can be hooked up to a cab?
@jptovee

@@nikfish1 yes it's got the speaker outputs for an external cab, I've never tried that setup so would assume that it kills the signal to the built in speaker

@@jptovee Even then you might be able to plug the internal speaker into another output speaker socket (provided you’re careful with the impedance etc)

Nice review. I've had this amp for over a year now. I tried a few different pedals over the dirty channel and by far, my beano treble boost, does an amazing job cutting out some of the lows and gives such a beautiful raunchy classic rock sound. If you get one of these, make sure it is the first pedal in your loop-it makes all the difference in the world.

@rpaulpen

AgentofKarios D no, I don’t run it through the fx loop. Run it in the front. Make sure it’s physically first from your guitar. In other words, nothing should be between it and your guitar, besides your cord :-).

Bought this amp and I must say absolutely great amp for smaller venues. Prefer to use the clean channel with pedals for a great overdriven tone. Great for Acdc type players.

Putting a delay in the effects loop won’t improve the clarity of the repeats on the natural channel since its overdrive is derived from the power amp section which comes after the effects return.

Really surprised how well made the thing is inside looking at it. Then after watching the video of the china plant it looks to be made by hand. Add the tones and you have a winner.

I love Orange distortion. I love it more than any other. But...Orange seems to do that ONE thing well, and brush the clean tones to the side. Even the "good" Orange cleans are bested by many other amp makers. So that is the Achilles heel of Orange. Its the One Trick Pony syndrome. If they would just keep the distortions in the great place where they live and pay some actual attention to cleans, they would literally blow the doors off. The lack of cleans has always been the reason I wont buy an Orange amplifier. Seriously, the only Orange I could justify in my own mind would be something thats so cheap that you wouldnt even expect a clean tone at that price... because of head room...Which is probably a Micro or Tiny Terror. This particular amp is the same stuff we see from Orange year after year... Great distortion and nearly nonexistent cleans. Cmon Orange! Stop it with the half complete amps! Design something with a great clean channel. You can do it!

Have you actually tried this yourself? My requirements for a clean tone are also very high, but honestly, the cleans on this thing are good enough for me. Absolutely no breakup and dont forget that you can always roll off some of the volume on your guitar. Better than the DSLs cleans for sure...
