The KT88's are awesome, but the sound I was hearing out of those KT77's from 4:40 min's to 5:13 min's was my tone all day long. I play a lot of 80's hard rock (not to be confused with hair metal). That being said. The KT88's low end tightness is like a dream come true for chugging, and D-jent style playing. But the in your face tight mids of the KT77's is what I'm talking about. The 6550's sounded Ok, but a bit too compressed, or lacking in the mids. Just not open enough in the midrange. I have a Jet City Modified for 2 X EL84's. I currently have 2 X JJ EL84L's in it. They sound great. But the KT77's are what my next Set of power tubes will be. Then the all mighty KT88's. Just to make sure.

After reading all of the comments. I believe you mentioned that you tried a couple of Genalex Gold Lion KT88's, and liked them better than the JJ's. I was also wondering what negative bias you set your amp at for the KT88's? An Amp tech suggested to me, somewhere between 48-52 Neg. Bias. I've also seen 60, or even 70. Very confusing to me. What do you suggest?
@DrDannyMannGuitar4 жыл бұрын
zpottsy the bias you set depends on the plate voltage of your amp. I usually like around 60% bias.
@zpottsy4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! 60% seems to be a popular setting. Since this Jet City Custom 22 was modified from EL84's to EL34's I may have to replace the bias feed resistor from let's say a 220k, to a 100k. depending on what reading I get when I go to bias it. Thanks again, and I'm gonna go with the Genalex KT88's before the KT77's. That tight detailed bass was the seller with those. ROCK ON!

Fantastic video. I am heavily considering an RV50mkii over my current Marshall JVM 410h. The JVM has sounded great on its own in a room, but on stage, it sounds sterile and shrill. Tried all kinds of tube combos. I love the articulation in a Marshall, I'm hoping to find the same in the Orange.

You can acheive a similar sound with the Jim Root Terror since the preamp is the same, but the bigger power section of the Rockerverb just makes the amp sound bigger and cleaner (more headroom). Of course the cab/speakers make a big difference too. For a small rig I recommend the g12h30 speaker, I have one in my orange 1x12 and it sounds huge!

Thanks! I'm glad you like the video. I used to have a Marshall too, and the Orange in comparison is more clear, responsive, sweet and heavy in my opinion haha. Yeah I have experience with both speakers, I really like the G12H30 in my 1x12 orange cab since it's a huge sounding speaker. V30s are tighter in the low end and more middy while the G12H30 has bigger bass, less mids and probably more crisp highs. Speakers and cabs make much bigger differences than power tubes for sure

@chorisia25 I didn't do a 6L6 test just because it seemed that these tube types would be more of what I was looking for. The KT88s haven't really made the amp hiss less than el34s, I don't think the power tubes affect that much.

@SorizonMann Thanks for that info. Kind of weird though huh? I guess I'll try out the 6L6's then. I have a feeling I'm just going to come back the to JJ EL34's or E34L's. I HATED the stock Ruby's. The JJ's realy smoothed the tone out in my MK II. Just wanted to see if the 6L6 might tame a bit of the extra graininess. I play a style sort of like chorisia only heavier. post-metal if you will. I will say that my clean channel is REALLY pretty clean though. But I need it a bit looser.
@DrDannyMannGuitar12 жыл бұрын
you can change preamp tubes without biasing so that may be a good start. Also, if you're using a lot of gain, all amps will hum, so for high gain noisegates are pretty crucial. Biasing power tubes is something you definitely need to research a lot to do safely. And although you'll save money in the long run, you will need to get the right tools to measure voltage. I learned how to bias my amp completely from online resources, so it takes some digging but it's totally doable.

@whiteyanderson For me, the 6L6 side of the bias switch was also more limited in its range but I still got up to about 47 on that side. For the KT88s I needed to go higher so I just kept the bias switch on the EL34 side. I emailed Orange tech support about this and they said that whatever side of the switch gets you in the right bias range is fine.
@DrDannyMannGuitar13 жыл бұрын
@sheishei1986 I don't have any experience with the Gold Lion KT88s, but I've read great things about them. As for the JJ's in the preamp, my experience is they tend to make your sound a little darker and smoother. This may be good for playing doom, but for me I had to carefully place mine because in certain slots I felt like it made the sound a little muddy. I'd recommend trying the preamp tubes first, seeing what you like, then changing the power tubes so you know how each affects your tone.

@DrDannyMannGuitar13 жыл бұрын
@chorisia25 My clean sound never distorted at all even at high volumes with the stock tubes. So there may be a different issue with your amp, maybe a preamp tube in your clean channel is bad? You are rebiasing with power tube changes right? If you usually like 6L6 tubes I'd recommend 6550s for a really crystal clean sound.
I own Orange Rockerverb 50 mk2 head and i want to change the power tubes with pairs of Genalex Gold Lion KT88. Great, thanks! Did you use a bias meter or another method? When I contacted Orange last week they said to look for 38-42 mA per valve. That should put the voltage somewhere over 500VDC. I have no problem biasing it per se and I have the tools and some experience with other electronics etc. but is there a way to adjust the bias trim pot without taking the amp apart to get to the circuit board? I found a picture that marked the 2 little holes behind the power tube as an access to the trim pots is that correct? Seeing the location of the pots on pictures of the circuit board of the MK1 it would approximately be the right place but I couldn't find anything definite on the topic.

DaveElwoodCutter Yes, if you're looking at the back of the amp, the left hole is for the bias trim pot (on the 50 watt version). I think the right hole would be for the other two power tubes in the 100 watt version.

hi there, firstly thanks for the video. i have a mrkii rockerverb 50 and after seeing this am totally considering changing to kt88's. my only problem with my rockerverb is that it looses its clarity at higher gain/volumes. it also feels like it has too much presence. im running it into a standard orange 4x12. v30's i think. is there anything you can recommend to help with these issues? i read about changing some pre amp valves and you mentioned changing the first to EH 12ax7? is this the answer? i think i have all stock tubes btw
@DrDannyMannGuitar8 жыл бұрын
Glad the video was useful for you! KT88s will noticeably help out with clarity. With the presence thing, the preamp tubes can make a small difference, and they are cheap and easy to swap. JJ 12ax7s typically smooth out high end. For the cab, I really like the combination of Celestion G12T75 in an X pattern with V30s. It gives a more balanced tone IMO. You can do this in your Orange cab or get a Bogner Ubercab (the cab I'm using now) which comes stock in this configuration. Good luck on your tone quest!

From my experience, KT88s seem to have a wider frequency range (including extended bass) that end up making your tone sound huge compared to el34s.

Tried the kt77s with kind of a cold bias?

This video has the KT77s with a hotter bias. I preferred the hotter bias sound over a medium bias for those tubes.

Kt88s and 6550s provide a lot of clean headroom in this amp and they offer a more unique tone than with the stock el34s. I wouldn't say you need the 100 watt.

This actually isn't an amp review, it's just demonstrating the effects of a power tube swap for two specific tones- a clean tone and a high gain metal tone. Hope you still got some use out of the video!

would have been nice to actually put labels IN the video so that the viewer wouldn't have to refer back to the comments repeatedly to know which tubes they're hearing
