This brings back so many memories! It definitely does taste better as an adult! My Mama soaked hers a couple days in the orange juice mixture pouring it on at night. I can't make myself make this cake because I know it could never compare to hers. She's been gone 4 yrs and I miss her so bad!...Thanks for the memories!

A friend of my sister used to make an orange slice cake. She always gifted them one for Christmas. Mother spent winter in Florida with my sister and her family. She loved it when the cake arrived. We never made it and somehow never got the recipe. I knew it was special for the two best cooks in our family to rave over it.

I love this cake. Have been looking for this recipe . My mom would bake this cake at Christmas for people she knew, they would ask her to make them and pay her to make them. I remember chopping up the orange slices ( we got to eat the leftovers) and the dates. Stir them up in the flour. Now I have to make the cake. Will be sharing like mama whose name was "Martha White " She was so excited when she found out there was a flour that had her name. From then on that was the only flour she used until she could no longer remember how to bake or cook. That was one of my saddest days because she loved to bake and cook for others and won so many purple , blue and red ribbons at the county fair over the years. After she went to heaven, I think my daughter and I found over 100 ribbons. Sorry to be so long. Your video brings back so may good memories of my mother cooking on the kitchen . When I got older baked and cooked for church dinners and family reunions people always said that my mama taught me well. I was proud of my Mother's ability to share her cooking skills when anyone in the church or her friends asked her to make one thing she would make a full meal and take it to the family in need. She was special and one of a kind.💕🌹🙏.

I made this cake this morning, and it is so good. I found regular dates, not the chopped up kind, and that is what my mother used to use because my job in helping, lol was cutting up all that sticky fruit. I really liked those kind dates they are really good and they were so fresh. I am shocked I even found them at Walmart in Gastonia. I made this cake years ago, not your recipe, but another one, and it would not even come out of the pan, I spooned it into a bowl and that is the way my sister and I ate it. I found your recipe and decided yours was going to be the one I used. I made it for my sister and I, she loves it. My mother used to make it but have no idea where her recipe is. I made it in 2 loaf glass pans and let it cool and I was shocked, it actually came out of the loaf pans. I used orange juice instead of fresh orange juice like my mother did. She used to squeeze oranges for her glaze. The cake is delicious, thank you for sharing this recipe.

When I finish dipping candies in white almond bark, I do not want to waste stuff, so I dip the orange slices in it. Put them on parchment/wax paper to set, then drizzle melted chocolate lightly over top and everyone just goes nuts over them. Came up with this idea about 10-12 yrs ago because didn't want to throw out anything and it made another candy for my tray with very little effort. Can use chocolate almond bark. Both pretty on plate.

This is the funniest video of all of the ones that I have been watching that I have seen! Between the carpenters in the back the fact you don’t like the cake and the fact that you goofed it up and bailed I am a laughing myself silly! I have had such ridiculous things happen while I was trying to bake and make some thing thinking it was going to be fantastic and have goofed them up terribly also! When your son comes on and he’s got ranch dressing all over his face and your husband eating the cake and telling you that he thinks it’s good and you keep saying you don’t like it but then you find out you really do like it! I am rolling on the floor thank you so much! For just being real and letting us see real people and not just people playacting! I am now diabetic so there’s no way I can make or even attempt to eat or even smell that cakeBut it’s got everything good in it so it can’t be totally wrong! Again thank you for putting this on I love it!

My mother was a cake queen. I learned to bake from helping her. LOL I really loved to cream the butter and sugar and eat some as I creamed it. LOL Well, anyway, I love to bake now, in fact I am the cake baker of the family, not quite as good as she was. She used to even make a fruitcake, and guess who got the job of cutting up all the sticky fruit, well I was a kid so I helped. She make the Orange Slice Cake and it was so good. Again, who got to cut up the orange slices, me. I have her recipes but I can not find it anywhere. I have looked for it everywhere. I then search the internet and YT is always my answer. I found your recipe, so you won. I already had the orange candy and not even planned on make the cake. I was going to use them for some easy cookies I was going to make. I sure hope I can find the dates because I have everything else. You have the closet recipe I have found to hers. Thank you for sharing. I live in Gastonia, if you still live in Asheboro.

Hi Leslie, it looks like it turned out good. My grandma made this all the time and it was my favorite cake she made. The BIG secret is don't put the dates in at all. I have never even tried it with dates. You cooked it slower and longer. I like that. I am going to have to try doing lower but longer. We always mixed the coconut and the nutes in with the orange slices and flour. That the only thing different besides the temp being higer and less time to cook. But I know the last time I made a few years ago it came out to dry, even with the orange juice glaze on it. Thanks for making it. Made me think of my grandmother...love and miss her dearly. I do hope that you did receive your Christmas card.

Brenda Gantt makes an Orange Slice Cake that you might enjoy just a wee bit better - there are a few tweaks you should consider.
@CJ-my4rv3 жыл бұрын
@@rooteddinfaithjourney Brenda Gantt’s Orange Slice Cake in also posted on KZbin and there were a few minor changes, but significant enough to make it a bit tastier. Fresh squeezed juice from an orange, cooking the glaze with granulated sugar and orange juice and something added into the buttermilk when she mixed the batter but I can’t recall if it was baking soda or baking powder. Like I said, it is posted on KZbin under Cooking with Brenda Gantt - so, I think the hot syrupy glaze might penetrate easier into the cake as opposed to the confectionery sugar glaze.

I think the recipe I have, the glaze is orange juice and regular sugar boiled for a minute, then spooned over the cooled cake with the holes poked with a skewer, then brushed on the sides. Maybe it sunk because the cake was warm and the glaze too thin...just a thought.

I almost had a heart attack watching you make this cake. I’ve made it several times you poke holes in the cake after you take it out of the pan you pour your icing on it,you let it sit overnight and the next day you brush the rest of your icing all over the cake. anyway the flour that you added to the dates in the orange slices you could use some of the flour that was already prescribed for the cake. I’m glad you like it the last time I made it I didn’t use orange slices I used gummy slices of pineapple, peach, orange, lime and lemon they were smaller pieces and easier to use.
