Really nice and thorough video! I plan to use one of these in my bixler 2, and, after you video, I can't wait wait for the stabilizer to arrive! I usually fly it on the beach and the winds here are crazy (often 15knots and seldom under 12 knots...). Thank you very much!

mmerry2.... Thanks for this video how-to series on the OrangeRx Stabilizer..!! I've been eyeballin' it at HK for awhile now but been waiting for some good guy to post a bench/field test like yours. Especially one that had some detail to it. Good job...!!! Make that a GREAT job...!!! Thanks for the test, results and helpful link(s)...!! You have an Okie Fan now.

Nice scientific testing of the Orange stabilizer. I recently got the version 2 Orange stabilizer, and I had very similar experiences. Even setting the gain potentiometers at the three o'clock position made my Bixler 1.1 very twitchy. I think 2 o'clock is about right. The one thing I miss with the Bixler 1.1 and this device is the ability to have the right and left ailerons on separate channels operate as flaperons. Maybe that will come out in version 3. You did a fine job on this project!!

the rotors can replace the ailerons and can be regulated by a stabilizer. there are many examples of twin engines that are connected to the side rudder which also could be connected to, rx3.

well, the oscillations when the gain is set high result from the intereaction between the correcting input from the stabilizer and the response of the airframe. A foam plane is relatively flexible and the wing and fuse both have a lower natural frequency than a built up (balsa ; carbon fiber etc.) plane and will result in large excusions when the gains are set high. A stiffer plane will have more rapid but smaller excursions at high gain.

why or how does it lessen the chance of stalls- thanks for the great informative video

Very helpful. Just watched this again. Perhaps you have the answer to this. On a tail dragger, when initializing ESC and Stabilizer for flying, is it necessary to raise the tail making the airframe level as it would be in flight? Or is the stabilizer already set to be flat and level and does not reset its orientation each time it is powered up. I have a 2 axis gyro from Banana Hobby, that initializes its orientation each time it powers up, and wondered if this was the same. Thanks

Yes, plenty of room. I mounted it inside. The v2 stabilizer is even smaller and will fit just fine in a Bixler, SkySurfer or similar glider.

never mind - I understand- it will lessen stalls if not pulling back on the stick- your sticks have authority over the stabilizer right- but can stall if pulling back too much with not enough airspeed- correct?

Still happy with it. I would recommend it, but now there is a version 2 available that I would suggest because it has more features including elevon mixing and ON/OFF switch via the transmitter. It is simple to use and the price is reasonable.

I haven't used the FY-41ap, but I think you will find the orangerx to be a good starter stabilizer and a good value for the cost. It's not going to give you a heading lock like the FY-41ap, so you will have to do some turning with the orangerx, but that's part of the fun of FPV. In my Skywalker, I used the Cyclops Storm OSD, which is currently being repaired, and while under repair I used the orangerx for stabilization and it does great! Like it so much, I have one in almost every plane I own.

Was the plane level when you plugged in the battery? I am not sure if it matters. I know it does on a heli gyro.

Great test video. It really seems to do a nice job and works as advertised but overall how would you rate this ? Seems to be a great buy especially for the price ? I`m getting into FPV and wanted to try a stabilizer before I went all out on something like the FY-41ap. Do you have any experience with the FY-41ap ?

It doesn't reset it's orientation each time you start it up. You just need to make sure it's mounted inside the plane in a level flight orientation, and at power up it just has to be still, not necessarily level. Hope that makes sense.

This isn't very related but... I have been trying to think of a design of a VTOL rc that can act as these planes but also as a twincopter, the best I can think is that I would have the rotors on the wing tips facing up on the servos to make them be able to do a full 90 degrees in both directions. It's easy for VTOL like flight but I don't think it can react like a proper rc plane would. Any suggestions?

@Cerberus256 12 жыл бұрын
Correct, these gain gyros do not need to have anything done. The heading hold gyros which are more common on helis need to be 'level' to give the reference angle to return to.

Excellent information in this video. One question to anyone who has this unit: when you increase the gains, does that change the plane's response to you controls? I have this unit on my Parkzone T-28 at a little more than 50% gain. The plane still gets move by the wind somewhat but it is also less nimble.

continued. ....The constant "hunting" by the servos results in higher batt consumption, hence the heating up of the esc etc. I have seen reduced batt duration on my slow stick when using this system. Any system employing rate feedback will consume power......

Does this just provide stabilization? Does it provide self leveling also? I’m looking for a less expensive fix for auto leveling similar to SAFE that spektrum has. Are there any good gyros you can recommend that might be somewhat on par to SAFE technology? It seems like all these gyros provide similar AS3X, but when it comes to auto leveling for fixed wing, it seems people advertise their products as such, but once I purchase and install, they work just like regular Rx’s... can’t seem to find anything that suits what I’m looking for . Spektrum. receivers with SAFE are just too damn expensive even though they are worth every penny

The guardian is in a different class, because it also does leveling. I got a KK2 board from HK that should be on par with the guardian. I plan to test it out in the Bixler. It only costs USD$30 instead of USD$75 for the guardian.

Why do you call the Bixler a glider? It's no such thing at all! The Parkzone Radian is a glider, meant to fly the vast majority of the time with motor off. And because it is a sailplane, that is exactly how most of us fly it? How many Bixler videos, including yours, show any power off flight? That's because it's no glider, much less a sailplane. Great video here, by the way! I really enjoyed it and learned a lot.
