Thanks for the tutorials Scott, they are all most helpful. This one lead to a rescue of a stranded Kerbal without his ship... His story, Keenan was returning for the Mun but ran out of fuel before getting into orbit. So he did the only thing he thought possible, grab the science then EVA and burn towards the planet. Amazingly he achieved an orbit, while his space craft continued to leave the system. He used all his available propellant, but was safe for now. He now had 5 hours of supplies to wait for rescue in the cold vacuum of space. The rescue mission was started, a 2 pod ship was launched, and relaunched more then once. After many many failed attempts it finally got within about 100m of Keenan. The rescue craft was now out of fuel though... So Ludwig the rescue Kerbal decides to EVA also and bump Keenan to the rescue ship. This is not easy and he gave up after a couple of very frustrating tries. Bumping the ship to Keenan must be easier... After literally hours of near passes and re adjustments, almost loosing a keyboard and quite a bit of hair, and disabling that damn sticky keys! The ship was bumped within reach of Keenan. Since Keenan can't turn anymore because he's used all his fuel, the ship needed to be perfect(what a nightmare). Keenan The courageous or stupid, stored the science first and grabbed for a handle, with a long sigh of relief he made it! After 6 hours both Kerbals are in a ship with supplies with no fuel, but lots of science and stories. Rescue ship 2 is on its way. Thanks Scott!

Here's a story for you: I recently set up a manned satellite called the "Sky_Sat_Mothership" in a very wide kerbin orbit (sorta 2/3 of the way to the moon) and it had run out of fuel. So essentially, the astronaut was stranded in the pod and I was trying to get an engineer to help refuel the satellite. I had been attempting to design a rocket which could take the engineer to space and dock to the "Sky_Sat_Mothership" That took about two hours. The other design I had made was too large to dock to itself and I could not send up the same one twice, so I had to design a ship as small as possible that could dock easily and transfer fuel. Once I got the rocket into space and separated it's stages, it took me about a whole ingame year to achieve perfectly circular orbit on the same level as the other ship, but when in this orbit, the satellites were on the other sides of the planet. The next task was to speed up the ship so as to not ruin the circular orbit. 10 quicksaves later, I am 1000m away from the mothership at 10mp/s. Once I had achieved a good speed relation (About 0.02mp/s difference) I got the docking ports to line up and face the same direction now all I have to do is... Oh... I forgot the mini thrusters. Now I have to use those boosters to try and get to the ship as opposed to a jetpack. So once again, two hours and over 50 quicksaves later, I am finally lined up correctly and am going at a great pace, but for some reason, I miss the mothership and go flying off in a random direction! So after another half hour of close calls, I decided to look up "How to dock satellites in KSP" and I listened to this video while attempting to dock the two humongous ships together. Then, at 14:05 in the video, as I am finally lined up, at the exact right speed, I go for it! And then, the two ships magnetically collide together and stick! I hear Scott say "You've docked!" and I yell "YES!" and immediatley create about 5 more quick saves. The two twin satellites as linked together and it now looks AWESOME. But there's a problem... The fuel tanks have basically run dry during the docking line up and there was not enough fuel to go around. Kids, do Alt+F12. It might just save you a whole afternoon.
Adakid1 Gaming I started to read this stroy. Then I hit show more to read the rest. then I just nope!

There's a reason people fail at rendezvous after watching this and that is because Scott uses the liquid fuel engine to adjust the orbit when he's closer than 1 km to the target. The secret is that you use RCS and mono propellant and adjust your velocity by pressing the I,J,K,L and H,N keys to match the velocity and path vector of the target. Plus that this videos is old BETA. In the video he spends a lot of time adjusting the velocity at 50 meters from the target instead of doing while coming in from 1+ km. Just put the prograde marker on the target, speed it up and see which direction it goes and then use RCS to push yourself in the opposite of the direction. When you can see your target, check what direction it's moving and try to match it. If it's going up you are moving down, so push up. Set the SAS to Target as well and you don't even have to use the WASD keys. And the bigger your ship is, the harder it will be to reverse the movement if you have to turn the ship around. I played KSP since BETA, never did a single rendezvous. Then I decided to learn it and read up on it, but this video didn't really explain how to use the RCS for adjusting the nodes or the orbit. Once you understand it, you'll laugh at how easy it was and you'll do almost perfect orbits every time. Then you can finally start doing the Apollo challenge and getting fuel stations out to other planets. My goal will be to have a satellite at every body in the system.

Hi Scott. Just wanted to send a huge thank you for the videos! 60 hours into the game and I'm still coming back to learn more. Bill and Henby also send their gratitude. After their fuel depleted on an unambitious science run to minmus, an unexpected gravity slingshot from the mun mid-rescue-attempt sent them off on a voyage around the sun. Many years passed, with two more failed rescue attempts. A couple of pointers from your vid and they're back, both surprisingly sane and enjoying life on Kerbal. :) Next up - rescuing Bob from the Mun and figuring out where Jebediah was last seen...

@Lrofmaulol11 жыл бұрын
Hey scott, one question (If you happen to read comments relatively frequently) Is it possible to build something like a geostationary ring? You know, like a massive circular space station that spans the entire planet. That'd be interesting. What would you need for it (even theoretically?) What would it look like?
@roderik199011 жыл бұрын
Massive massive amounts of material, also a good propulsion system all around the ring, since I'm fairly sure that ring will not stably stay in that orbit.
@Lrofmaulol11 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know. But when he made the "What does it take to deorbit a moon" or "What does it take to reach light speed", that was really awesome! I'd love to see a video with that other subject.
@Lrofmaulol11 жыл бұрын
I'm very aware of that. But just what would it take O_o
@roderik199011 жыл бұрын
A geostationary orbit around kerbal has a radius of about 3468.75km Which means that the ring you are talking about would have a circumference of some 21794.80 km. Which is a bit over half the circumference of our earth.

can u make a vid about how to catch up with a target if you were front of it or behind it
@SungazerDNB8 жыл бұрын
I figured out how to do this on my own, use SAS to aim yourself towards the target and either: 1. Progress to the target with RCS (slow but you won't change your orbit this way so you won't crash into kerbin) or 2. Accelerate while pointing towards your target ship and brake in retrograde direction so you don't change your orbit as you go.
@Vincentkelton8 жыл бұрын
i'm having the same issue the thing is the faster you go the larger your orbit will be which will move you further from your target. you have to intercept it so to speak

They program ships to do this shit at NASA, and all the pilots are trained to be able to manually do this shit in case of an autopilot malfunction. You just need to practice this a few times and eventually it'll become as easy as getting to orbit. When I was first trying to get to orbit, I had to watch and rewatch the orbit tutorial video about 10 times to get it right. Now getting to orbit is a piece of cake. Just watch this video a few times, practice it, and it'll be easy. Good luck.

Probably a lot fewer people than that. It's the same 15,000 that keep coming back to see why our stuff isn't working or going as easily as it does for him. Usually something stupidly obvious that he totally mentioned but we forgot.

Hey Scott. Little tip for rendezvous. Use an elliptical orbit with Apo at the target orbit. I do it like this: During launch raise Apo to target orbit. Set target object, the set a maneuver node at Apo. Increase or decrease the delta-V until I get a close approach at next Apo. As long as my Peri is above the atmosphere I can make rendezvous in one orbit. If it's below, I burn to bring peri just above atmo, go around once and try again at next apo.

Wow. The in-game tutorial does a TERRIBLE job of explaining this.

Thank you Scott for being so helpful. I was addicted to this "game" the minute I set eyes on it, but if not for your tutorials I'd still be blowing up Kerbals on the launchpad. Thank you!

Keep at it. Google is your friend. Kerbal is one of those apps that get exponentially better the more YOU learn. The sense of accomplishment after performing an orbital rendezvous and dock is real, because you had to learn real-world science and physics principles. There are plenty of people who will help you. Just reach out.

I didn't understand any of this. Maybe you should speak clearer, speak slower and explain the meaning of the words you use

A lot of them are basic physics terms. I'm sure he explained them in his first KSP videos but if you expect him to re-explain something every time he says it you expect a lot for a little.
@TimEriksenA11 жыл бұрын
SuperPizzaman55 Maybe you should learn english, read up on some basic words related to physics and rocket science and do something about the situation yourself, instead of asking others to change? The majority of us understand this perfectly, so it would be fair to say that Scott is not the problem.

Thanks Scott! I tried for 3 hours without tutorials then got it on the first try after watching your video

I just completely destroyed an entire room because of how difficult this is. I was three seconds away from actually literally and honestly smashing my laptop on the ground and destroying it. This tutorial did nothing to help me. It didn't help that the game was bugging out so fucking much. It refused to show me my target velocity. Then physics broke and my acceleration was doing fuck all. I just spent the past 5 hours trying to dock one fucking thing.

My god I just did my first successful dock! It was with pretty small ships. So happy right now as well as Jebidia and the other crew members as they are having a party. I have to say it wasn't easy for a noobie like me. I watched several videos all over youtube on docking. Everything this guy warned to avoid, I got into that mess. I kept overshooting so many times for when I was close and I nearly even crashed into the target but I was able to do it. Just wanted to say thank you!

it basically does what your pitch, rotation and SAS does, but it uses the monopropellant exhaust to provide more power, which helps aligning larger objects in docking it is also used for gentle maneuvers

Thanks Scott, I'd struggled to find a good explanation of the pink target markers and this vid did the trick. I now have my first space station with 4 happyish Kerbals onboard.

After waiting 2 hours for the best intersection, and spending 20 minutes at about 30m around the target I GOT IT!!! Thank you Scott!:) Btw. if you are doing it for the first time bring a lot of monopropellant (I had 650 and there's only 25 left:D) and place some linear thruster too it was pretty tough for me without them. Thanks again Scott, helped a lot:)

I believe he means in the vehicle's navball. On the navball the line represents the "horizon", blue is the "sky". It basically tells you if you're going 'up' or 'down'.

Thanks Scott! I had a hard time reaching one of my deep space probes that couldn't land due to lack of parachutes, but I wanted to get the science from Eve. This helped me understand how to sync up orbits and kill the relative velocity.
