I once challenged the players. They could see the bags of gold but sitting on top of them was a crying Orc child. There was a 1 eyed 3 legged shepherd dog defending the child. Growling menacingly at the party. I knew the party's fighter grew up around German Shepherd Dogs. Meta Knowledge is only allowed when the GM's get to use it.

Since the nature of megadungeons is to delve, steal, go home, repeat... how do you think the orcs would react to the party doing hit and runs and wrecking their army? First time they may bulk up defense, but after like half their crew gets wiped on the 2nd or 3rd run..?

And another question, how do you think players would find the entrances, like the tower?

Typically I would figure a rate of “restocking” based on the population of orcs in the area etc. Also if a town is nearby, they my decide to raid the town in retribution.

Rumors and exploration. Over time savvy players learn to look for other entrances.

Before the adventurers come back they may desert the lair taking all day they have left, or ask for help from someone (or something) powerful and deadly. They may want to negotiate and surrender, although I think orcs are generally too proud to ever surrender. The answer reveals itself if you put yourself in the orc's shoes.

I know that you omitted the women and children from the Orc roster but I believe it might even be more interesting to have them there. If the PC's are good aligned, especially a Paladin, it would make it harder for them to simply cast a fireball to wipe them out. Since some PC's would not want to harm the women and children, they might have to be more careful to avoid harming them. It would seem more realistic that they would have them there unless it was just a military outpost.

I see it as an outpost - I don’t place civilians in my adventures usually, but I know some people like that sense of reality and it can certainly be a cool setup for the right group
