Yes, the bowhead whale hunt is a shame. Some of those whales grow to some incredible ages, like 80's, 90's and over a hundred. The only reason, I believe is that whole areas that used to be ice have opened up. Orcas now can hunt populations of belugas, narwhal and very old bowheads whales. It's opened up to marine travel, which also can NOT be good for Arctic sealife.

Kidnap is a good euphemism for what they did.
@northernsnow6982
@northernsnow6982 8 ай бұрын
What do you mean euphemism? That is exactly what happened in this clip. The orcas took the humpback baby and convinced it that it was their baby. They didn't sugarcoat what happened. They were blunt about it. I'm sure they mention the baby being food in other parts of the full episode. That's how nature shows work. This is just a clip of the show, to entice people to watch the full show. That's called self-advertising or self-promotion. It's definitely not a euphemism.

I’ve heard of some hunting techniques that Orcas use depending on where they live. Orcas in the Arctic use Spy Hopping, Orcas from the coast would wash themselves on shore to snatch sea lions, and Orcas in Antarctica would create waves to break ice floes. I’ve also heard about an Orca who’s learned how to hunt Elephant Seal pups by using the tide. This technique of Orcas kidnapping a baby Humpback Whale is definitely new. I never even thought Orcas would think of doing that. Looks like Orcas are creating more new hunting techniques.

Not even the ones with helicopter parents, that don't let their kids out of their sight. It doesn't matter if your kid is at your side, and both parents are around, as shown in this clip. Good thing we aren't whales. Most people go through life without being in any actual danger, just their perceived danger. There are infact many safe places for children. Most children even manage to make it to being an adult, with no problems at all.

They try to give chase and communicate what’s going on, but the baby hasn’t developed enough. A lot of times the adult humpbacks will fight them off and win. Orcas are also able to cause massive confusion for the other adult humpback whales, and throw off their trail. They travel in massive pods that can interrupt communication, and interfere with them chasing down the calf…etc. Orcas attacking humpback whales are EXTREMELY rare though. They must’ve been hungry af 😂

They are fine diners. Very picky eaters. E.g. They're only going to eat the tongue of that little whale and discard the rest of it's body. In other words, they hunted it specifically for it's tongue. When they hunt sharks, they only eat the shark's liver, and discard the rest. Both have very high calories. Our livers are horrible and our tongues small. And they need tens of thousands of calories. We're not worth the calories.

They already have. They're the second most widely spread species on earth (after humans). They dominate in any and every ocean environment on earth.

Why? They are top predators & they never hurt a human outside of captivity. Their anatomy & teeth are different. They need larger prey to feed their groups. They are more like oversize dolphins than whales.

Not trying to be mean/prob dumb question but… This “just” happened while there were drones in the air and cameras close by underwater? How much footage did they have to take to get this 3min bit?

2:50 the swimming motion on the baby and one of the orcas looked a little unnatural. And the clarity of the animals is a little weird. I think this weird sequence is just AI.

Sometimes Male Humpbacks escort mothers and calves as sort of sn escort so when the Calf reaches independence the escorting male will have a better chance at mating with the female. They will not only escort and deter mother and baby humpbacks but males have also been documented scaring off orca's hunting other different species of whales abd sticking close to them until they believe the threat has passed

Various scientists such as Emma Luck have criticized the term kidnapped here as it's very anthropomorphic. Most predatory animals will isolate a juvenile from its parents in order to more easily prey upon it. Its simply survival, not exactly kidnapping in the way humans would.

This hunting method also shows that Orcas are aware how dangerous Humpbacks are when compared to other baleen whales. Humpbacks can use their flippers like giant, knobbed clubs for self defense. Other baleen whales don’t have such weapons, and therefore pose less of a threat. If this were a Grey whale mother and calf, the orcas would’ve just attacked and worn them down instead of waiting for ambush.

Usually sperm whales. They'll stop whatever they're doing to go interrupt orca activity if they're nearby. But recently a new pod of orcas were discovered that specializes in eating sperm whales...even taking on very large groups sperm whales, and getting a meal at the end.
