20 years as a orca guide and I have never seen so many orcas in the same time before, we estimated it to be around 300 orcas in the same spot feeding on a giant school of herring. Here is the RAW footage taken on my Sony A7SII with a Sigma 35mm f/1,4.

For anyone wondering about the orca with the collapsed dorsal fin, at the end of the video - no, this was not ever a captive orca. This is an entirely wild population. Although not common, collapsed dorsal fins are found in wild orca groups, from time to time. Some could be the result of stress or injury, but others appear to show up in family groups, suggesting a genetic link. Not much is known about wild orca dorsal fin collapse due to the relative rarity, but it does exist.

Around 5% of the male orcas in Norway have this "drooped fin", I can't really tell you why. Almost 100% of all the male orcas in captivity has it and the reason is lack of movement. Because they are in a small tank they can't exercise there spin muscle enough and they can't keep the big dorsal fin erect. :(

That seems like it would be absolutely terrifying in real life, I keep forgetting that orca are literally apex predators and that if they worked together they could flip that boat

Yes David all 3 pods came by with a break in between it was not a super pod but its I was L K and J.They were forcing the salmon into the kelp beds or the salmon or they were hiding in the beds I was picked to be a pool news cameraman for a birth of an orca at the Vancouver Aquarium 7 hrs of a mystical experience I was hooked .Did you watch my Super pod ?

Thank you so much for posting this. I would give almost anything to see orcas in the wild. It would be such a spiritual event. I can almost feel it while watching this video. I don't think I would be able to stop myself from getting in the water with them. They are just amazing animals. I had a very large collection of orca things until my house burned down. Again, Thank you for posting this. They are truly a majestic animal.

Too lesser view for an incredible video, I feel people end their thoughts with sharks, like me who always thought sharks are top of food chain in the oceans. Since i came to realize orcas tops the list of apex predators in oceans I've been in a different world

I wonder if loss of fish stocks in other places has made this even more important to fish eating Orca. They have lost so many of their other prey especially Salmon . . .

These orcas only eat herring. The resident whales in Canada and Washington State eat salmon.

@@CleverClover2023 I would think that the orca populations in the Atlantic may also hunt Atlantic Salmon since they are a natural species of the Atlantic Ecosystem. Just that they're very rare due to overfishing, open net fish farms which they've been operating those same farms in the Pacific Northwest breeding a species of salmon that aren't even native to these waters. But yeah herring is obviously their staple as it is the most plentiful... For now.

I'm curious is this a couple pods co-operating for a massive bait ball or something or is this a couple pods together for mating purposes?....can't really tell from above water.

A fishing vessel, quite far away, had to dump there catch. I only saw so many orcas together before and that was when BBC filmed the blue planet and one orca was stuck in the fishing net.
