Enola Gay was the name of the plane that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. 8:15 is the time that the clocks were supposedly frozen at in the ruins of the city. "The kiss you give is never, ever, going to fade away" is the nuclear fallout. The more you know an all that...

I'm British and am shocked that I know more about US history - Enola Gay, Little Boy and J. Robert Oppenheimer. Oh and the "Battle of the Bulge" or the Ardennes Offensive to give it its correct name where more than just US troops were fighting but for PR reasons the British Govt said let them take the credit

I am pretty sure somebody has already weighed in on the story of Enola Gay. It was a Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber that dropped a bomb called ''Little Boy'' on the Hiroshima, Japan during WWII. That's the brief of an historical event.
@billw715
@billw715 9 ай бұрын
It wasn't just "a bomb" that made this a historical event as am I sure you are cognizant of. For those who are unaware, the bomb dropped was the first atomic bomb used in war. Additionally, the song is not just about the atomic bomb, it's primarily about the plane, Enola Gay and the pilot's decision to execute orders to kill in order to save others. This dilemma is broached when Andrew McCluskey sings, "Enola Gay... Is mother proud of little boy today?" Enola Gay is a double entendre for the pilot (& of course the name of the plane) who dropped the atomic bomb.

Enola Gay was the bomber, named after the pilot's mother. dropped it was the plane that dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima Japan during World War two, that afterwards made Japan surrender. The band, OMD from Liverpool UK, were originally going to call themselves, 'Hitlers Underpants'. The synth used on this was, a Korg monophonic, meaning you could only play single notes. One of the Boy's mothers bought it from a mail-order catalogue. When they first started, they couldn't even afford a synth, so hey made several electronic devices.

1st I wanna thank you for using the full name of the band. It's always been my favorite name for a band. Everything they did when they used their full name was great. I always considered Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark's music to be a kind of Oxymoron-ish, retro-ish futurist music, in that in the 50's and 60's there was a kind of space-age notion of what the future (1984, 1999, the year 2000, etc., would be like. Futuristic flying cars and moving sidewalks were a kind of central theme of what they thought the future would be like). So you have this kind of futurist thing, mixed with their (the 2 guys that started the band before adding the drummer and another keyboardist) love of what German bands like Kraftwerk were doing, this being done by 2 guys that looked more like Oxford preppy's than anything else. Brian Eno, Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark, Gary Numan, and some John Foxx era Ultravox. They really knew how to create alluring and mysterious spaces. Oh yeah, @johnbarrick80 got exactly right what the song's about.

I don't mean to take the piss guys but come on, how do you not know the story of Enola Gay, it was the name of the B29 Superfortress that, on August 6th 1945 at 8:15 am dropped the atomic bomb( code named Little Boy) on Hiroshima! The lyrics will be clearer now. " This kiss you give it's never ever going to fade away"

Enola Gay is the name of the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb during war. The pilot of the plane, Paul Tibbets, named the plane after his mother the day before his mission. In the song however, Enola Gay is a double entendre that is also the pilot & the song has more to do with the plane, pilot and the decision to kill en masse ironically, with the thought to save lives as Andy McCluskey sings, "Enola Gay... Is mother proud of little boy today?" Both OMD members Andy McCluskey & Paul Humprehys were fans of WW II bombers & McCluskey was at the library researching German Messerschmitt bombers when he was introduced to Enola Gay. OMD has a song called The Messerschmitt Twins as well reinforcing their interest with WW2 bombers.

I'm not a huge synth fan but I do like OMD. I thought the title 'Enola Gay' would make it clear what the song was about but to my dismay it was used last year in tv adverts in the UK, it's like restaurants at Christmas time playing Band Aid 'feed the world' on their festive mix! Perhaps doing a quick google after you've listened would help with the context of some songs, just a suggestion, not a criticism.

I was at Gary's first ever tour gig in Glasgow (amazing experience in itself!), and had only just heard of OMD (they were a 3-piece band at the time, with one band "member" Winston being a TEAC 4-track; it's in a music museum somewhere now...). During their support act, one very loud Glaswegian voice yelled out a request for "ELECTRICITY!", and they of course obliged. The next day I went into a tiny record shop in Glasgow and asked the guy behind the counter if he had a record called "Electricity" by "Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark". His hands had been occupied under the counter, and he immediately raised one holding a copy of the record!! Me: "Aye, that's the one!" Of course, I got the first few albums as soon as they came out after that. 😺 In '81 I saw them headline in Edinburgh. I was near the front right by one of the speaker stacks, and as they left the stage they left "Stanlow" playing after turning the volume up. My hearing hasn't been quite the same since...

So you just heard a Liverpool band compose a song about USA dropping 2 bombs on Japan. A crime. One was Hydrogen - one was Plutonium. Three days apart. (they were experimenting) And your scan is to yap on about suit-wearing Motown artists bands from 1958 on.? Andy McCluskey wrote this at 17 - alone - in the other guys house while he was at minimum wage work, and Humphrey’s mother was at work also. (Humphrey’s own father died when he was young at school) The last Japanese survivor for to survive both blasts just died recently, he was hit by one bomb, moved to the other city after a 3 day travel and got hit again. He was almost 100. It was on the news. ‘Naga’ means ‘snake’ (mainly in Indian languages) or ‘long’ in Japanese. ‘Shima’ means ‘Island’ (‘shuma’ in Korean) ‘Hiro’ means ‘broad’ i am sure. The bomber plane was named after the pilots mother. I guess you are Canadian by the name and the accent. O.M.D were influenced by German bands, cardinally Kraftwerk. I am from Glasgow so yous know i am not hiding. I am not being rude but this “reaction” was like a dog watching a card trick. Look stuff up. && *“Don’t forget to enjoy yourself.”*

Andy McCluskey was possibly the least cool person ever to appear on tv, and a terrible dancer. It's a catchy tune for such a dark subject, but I learned something from the song. The threat of nuclear war was something on the minds of many of us around that time. I think the band's first single, Electricity, is their best. I lost interest in them very quickly after that.

Every Breath You Take was a huge hit when and where we grew up. You couldn't escape it. We both know that song very well, and therefore, we couldn't honestly react to it and tell you what we think. We appreciate you taking the time to ask, though. Do you any other song ideas that maybe we wouldn't be familiar with?

Yes having watched these reaction videos from americans on british bands like the stranglers,xtc,the jam,ian dury and the blockheads,o.m.g. etc etc...t.b.h. this couple are o.k. compared to SOME u tube reactions ie...ohhh look at me me me showing off and being too loud and knowing f**k all about what the songs about,having watched many of them theres a lot that are very irritating BUT this couple is O.K. i'm also shocked/surprised that as an Englishman (a britisher as the sceptics(ryhming slang) might say,OHHH MY GAAAWD!) hahahaha! its just thwy need a history lesson about their own country! hahahaha! 😂😂😂😂,all the best,Piers A.K.A. We never got into the world wars too much. Of course, the lessons were taught in school about what happened, who it affected, and all. We'd remembered seeing the name 'Enola Gay' on the side of one of the planes that bombed Japan, but it wasn't as important to us as what the result was. The horror of that day was way more striking to us. By the way, we're Canadian.

I think it's in the 'Synth Britannia' docu where OMD say they had not been impressed with Numan suddenly popping up out of nowhere and having instant success, while they themselves had been making music in a similar style already for quite a while and *still* were pretty much unknown 😅 By the way, isn't 'Only When You Leave' by Spandau Ballet?! 😉

@@mightyV444 Yes I meant if you leave but spandau ballet I like too! The synth brittania documementry is very good. Yes they said that about numan but numan also helped there career because they supported him on his famous touring principle. 👽
