I didnt know this! OMD have finally got the chance to thank the person who launched their career. Electricity was the first song Andy McCloskey and Paul Humphrey’s wrote together but it was the wife of late Factory Records boss Tony Wilson who persuaded him to release it after they played in early gig in Manchester. Tony’s wife, Lindsay literally fished our tape out of the junk bag in Tony’s car. Tony didn’t like it, but she was intrigued enough to play it and loved electricity. She thought it was a hit. When we met Lindsay personally for the first time last year we thanked her profusely. The b-side, Almosy, also inspired another pop master to ditch the guitar and invest in a synthesizer. Vince Clarke went out and bought a synth as a result and Almost was the first thing he learn to play on it. Shortly after that, Vince formed Depeche Mode and the rest is history. Clarke returned the favor with a new remix of Almost as part of OMD’s 40th anniversary celebration earlier this year. Classic Pop December 2019.

@@themerseyflows5485 Vince's remix is unfeeling, uses more digital-based sounds than analogue (so is therefore not shrouded in early 80s synth sounds) and arguably lacks basic musicality with certain events occurring a beat before they should (the steam / hiss). Vince was only a pioneer so far as he was successful by and large in a pop era. His input into Depeche Mode was eclipsed by Alan Wilder, his pop-sound suited Erasure, which was another band I couldn't be bothered with and on a par with the Pet Shop Boys (whom I also loathe). OMD had something special and unique that set them apart from the also-rans and Vince, being one of them (as far as I'm concerned), can't capture it or get close. He's formulaic without musical sensitivity. He's a plug-in and an awkward, clumsy sounding one to boot.

@@warlock242 formulaic? I'm far from an Erasure/Yazoo fan, but this is the guy who wrote Only You, which is a great song. And Photographic, Ice Machine, Don't Go and plenty of other great songs .. OMD, who I adore regardless of era, were incredibly formulaic, from Junk Culture onwards. Even the brilliant comeback stuff is calculated to sound like Kraftwerk and early OMD. And youre complaining about off-beats, really? Vince is unashamedly pop, nothing wrong with that, I love Alan Wilder for the sonic depth he gave DM, but pop is good too. Andy McCluskey wrote songs for Atomic Kitten, who were as bubble gum as it gets.

@@themerseyflows5485 OMD's first four albums are the only ones that count. Junk Culture and onwards was / is ephemeral and I give it no time. Sure Vince wrote a few good tracks early on, just like OMD; I really like Ice Machine, though he too is guilty of writing bubblegum thereafter. I think it happens to a lot of artists. Always the first few albums are held in high regard and then their careers taper with time.

'Wonderland' meets 'A&M', I love the rawness and experimentation of OMD's early music - where as I enjoy the lush production and melodic sophistication of the early Erasure - 'Who Needs Love Like That' for instance, 'Almost' is a better song than 'Electricity' - just as 'March on Down the Line' was a more sophisticated and polished song than 'Oh L'amour' [I love both for different reasons]. Fascinating to wonder what other remixes these OMD and Vince Clarke could come up with.

Load of bollocks. Why do people dislike it? Because it's stilted, disjointed and sounds like he's hitting preset sequences like people used to use fill-ins. The original has flow and grace and is so organically analogue you feel a part of the sound whereas this is formulaic computerised tosh you'd expect from a busker with a Casiotone keyboard.
