Just to mention; it is *very* likely that a musician would switch between legato and other techniques in the same bar. E.g. don’t “just” switch articulations in between motifs; find how different articulations best supplement each other in a single motif. Feel it - it’s really the only way.

A great tip for working with legato and any wind or brass instrument is to exhale as you're entering the notes on your keyboard. Lung powered instruments can only have legatos as long as the amount of air the player can exhale in one go, after all.

Guy, you are an inspiration my man. As a guy nearing 50, who still has no clue how to play, but loves to try to create cinematic trailer like music and edm (what a combo), I figured being older, my days are over. I am waiting on a new MK3 NI keyboard to drop (since MK2 has been out > 3 years and they seem to drop one every 3 years or so), so stuck with the M32 for now, but am trying to work my way through figuring out the Spitfire Audio Abbey road pack and eric whitacre choir along with Komplete 13 (cheaper one) and a couple other VSTs... you may have done a video on this previously, but man I would love to see you go over how you get creative with so many sounds/libraries at your disposal. Before.. I had some cheap free stuff so not enough. I took the plunge and spent the money (and probably still want some more sounds) to finally have some sounds to work with and now I am overwhelmed with trying to find the right sound. I use the M32 to navigate through Komplete Kontrol, but still there are so so many sounds.. good thing to have, but as you go through these courses, about Legato, etc.. how do you know which one works and which one doesnt for something like Legato? Did you just spend hours and hours going through sounds and eventually remembering which instrument of which library has legato working right vs those that are just minimal sampling per instrument and don't work right? Anyway.. love your videos and your approach to your channel.

It’s so great you focused on legato articulation In this tutorial as it’s my favorite articulation and possibly the most difficult to capture.For piano strings and brass... In my world it’s the secret juice that lends beauty or grace to a composition . Doing the grades on piano I wasn’t allowed to deviate from the expression as dictated by the music score ....allegro etc. .. stuff that ... and so with respect to the genre and appropriately I developed a legattoesk right hand for the pieces which pleased me and actually pleased some of the examiners ....beauty moves most folks .. One thing that people could do in exploring the possibilities of the legato articulation is to find a pal who plays violin , or cello or trumpet or piano ..etc. and hear live what legato expression is...or listen to adagio for strings by Barber with a beer or glass of Vimto Yours for articulation Limbic 🎶🎶🙏🎩

Guy, thank you for this legato bit. I always do my best to imagine the real player. If it was on me; I'd have all those real orchestral players working for me. But as long as that won't happen, I have to stick to the sample libraries ;)

There is a fine line between legato & portamento, and that Cinematic Studio Solo Strings setting is on the wrong side of it, in my humble view as a string player.
@anatomicallymodernhuman51753 жыл бұрын
I would pay Spitfire for a BBC SO update that had separate legato and portamento string articulations. Or key switches to choose which transition to use between the next notes or something.

legato's are great for long emotional passages,dont use it much in fast passages,today i bought the pricy symphonic choirs from eastwest,but i needed female, male, and a boys choir with a wordbuilder,now i can create sentences that make some sense instaid of some sylables yeahh lol

Guy, on the subject of bleeding-edge legato sampling, have you by any chance had a play around on Embertone's Joshua Bell Violin? I'd love to see a video of you taming this beautiful beast - though you may need to cast aside the sunglasses of doubt and instead don the Aviators of Brilliance! 👍🏻 🎶

Legato is awesome for slower stuff or building backgrounds and staccato - perfect for some fast paced action in the first plan but both legato and staccato should be combined in terms of leitmotifs

So with strings that can, effectively, play notes continually without pauses is it harder to work out where to use legatos are where not? Compared with woodwind, for example, where the player has to pause to take a breath (even if very quickly) and therefore at that point it's physically impossible to play a legato?

Guy. guilty of legato crimes, when writing spiccato i normally layer a legato instrument (solo) on top to get that effect, is that the right thing to do as my spiccato is far to dry at times ?

Thank you for a great channel and very interesting explanations regarding the handling of various instruments. And it's also great with a little humor in between. I grew up more or less in the concert hall in Stockholm and later Bergwaldhallen when my Dad played Percussion in the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Digital strings have never been my strong point but teach me a lot from your very good explanations. If you do not have the feeling and the dynamics, then it does not matter how good sound bank you have. Have the best and thank you for a great channel. Simon.
