Just sharing. I have a phaleanopsis that continuously manages to surprise me. This one I got last year March. 2 flower spikes, bloomed for 8 months. (That I could hardly believe) 🤩 After the last flower dropped I cut a bit off each spike. Within a few weeks, one spike popped out a keiki, the other a secondary spike with five flowers. I removed the keiki once it had enough roots and it's doing very well. Now I'm waiting for those 5 flowers to finish so I can cut both spikes off completely, repot (as its getting way too big for its current pot), and then wait for new spikes in the new season. This morning I got a huge surprise. It's pushing out a brand new primary spike. Is it common for an orchid to push out a new primary spike whilst its still in bloom? All this happened in just over 1 year. Such a vigorous and interesting grower this one. 😀

Love your blooms - what a gorgeous collection! I felt a bit called out there 22:27 haha. Next logical step after Phalaenopsis are Dendrobiums. Ooops! My first orchid was a Miltoniopis (which is how I found your channel) and then I went for Cattleya species.... Clearly absolutely illogical behaviour here. HAHA My Miltoniopsis is working on buds as well. It had two spikes in bloom in December and January and there are four more to come.

Hi Annabel, I’ve got an Id for your yellow striped phal: it’s Sunny radiance, she looks just the same as the one I’ve got from orchid deluxe 2 years ago!
@TheOrchidRoom3 жыл бұрын
Thanks 🥰 The reason I still call them NoIDs is there are aboit 4 that look identical. As with many complex hybrid phals. There is no way to be sure, it only matters if you are going to hybridise them which is impossible if you didn't purchase with an ID that clearly matches the bloom- this is where large scale hubridising issues can occur. Since I am growing them for enjoyment and won't be pollinating using any of them because of this, I really don't care for the ID, I just put a few similar on screen for people who wish to purchase a phal with a similar look. If you look at each if the ones I put up on screen they also have varieties that look identical, although of course there is seedling variation. If the text box issue makes them unreadable, a few similar are Phal Baldans Kaleidoscope, Phal KV Beauty and Phal Torino. There is seedling variation and colour variation with clones but I have found images of each of those that also exactly match my bloom.

Gorgeous orchids. I can't wait for your videos. I love that little star🥰. From where are you buying your orchids now? I have tried spicesotic from ebay....but I was a bit disappointed...and the orchids came with a few free aphids as well...
@TheOrchidRoom3 жыл бұрын
Aww thankyou! 💗 I haven't really bought any orchids since the Ecuagenera order last year tbh... UK sellers mostly don't appeal to me with their ranges, although spicesotic was always a staple. The last few orders from them were fine, mostly, I think they've got a bit pricey though and I do agree I think they've grown so much that the original quality that was always there had gone down. I guess that's what happens with good sellers, they eventually become so big they start getting the drawbacks of some nurseries. I wish I could still order from Lucke orchideen or orchidgarden 😥 they had the best ranges of the types of orchids I most enjoy growing. Try finding a polychilos hybrid phal for under £30 in the UK now, it's crazy. Glad I had a Phal and Cattleya binge last year!
@SemihydroponicswithSma3 жыл бұрын
@@TheOrchidRoom you definitely right. So many people in the US want Sweet Memory, that plant sells for $70-$100 here. and it rarely comes up available. I hope you're able to clear up whatever it is with the Guatemalensis, a fungal treatment certainly can't hurt. I've got a boatload of African Violets as well. All of mine are trailing varieties, which you sacrifice bloom size but they never stop blooming. I have two plants that have been in bloom continuously almost four years. And I discovered four spikes developing on my only Lycaste. Since it is brevispatha x bradeorum, the flowers aren't as large as the common hybrids (skinneri types). but it is able to handle warmer temps.
@SuperMariela783 жыл бұрын
OMG, I've seen the Sweet Memory for as little as 10 euros here. I've got two! Both with lots of buds at the moment! Dreaming about the Appleblossom...One day, God willing...
@michaelmccarthy40773 жыл бұрын
@@SuperMariela78 I know, it is dirt cheap over in Europe. Only two people I know of here import them and I think they triple their cost because they know people will pay it. Sort of like Miltonia Sunset, cheap and easily had in Europe. In the US, seldom seen. Trader Joe's on the west coast was getting them for a while and people were buying them for $15 and selling them on eBay for $50+.
@TheOrchidRoom3 жыл бұрын
These availability issues 🙈🤦♀️ I've always wondered why all the suppliers stopped shipping the iwanagara appleblossom to Europe, and I wonder why the sweet memory and the chantilly lace can't make it to the US... Just with the scale of the exporting going on, you would think it would be possible. I almost wonder if it is to drive prices up... that seems unlikely, but you have to wonder, with the way the rare houseplant market went

I hope your Lycaste is fragrant Michael! I was a bit disappointed with mine I'm not going to lie. Zero fragrance. What I get for getting a complex hybrid I guess. The AVs are amazing and I got overexcited and got loads of cuttings, and now they are all massive and drinking like swamp plants.
@michaelmccarthy40773 жыл бұрын
@@TheOrchidRoom The Lycaste came with a bud last year and I don't remember it being fragrant but it is yellow and I have a soft spot for yellow. Plus any orchid that I can just "set and forget" and still blooms is alright by me. Have you started looking for a bigger house yet to accommodate the plants? Annabelle, hi! I. Have a question. Have you used slow release fertilizer granules like Osmoquote for vandas?. Mine are hanging beneath misters which I turn on when Las Vegas is at 116 degrees. Absolutely beautiful Do you grow your cattleyas in a southern exposure?
@TheOrchidRoom3 жыл бұрын
Thankyou 🙂 All my orchids are grown in the same room (bar the cool growers) so they all get the same exposure. The Cattleya are shaded by the Vanda and Catasetinae on the shelves above. Our area is full of trees so I don't think giving a facing of the conservatory really tells much, south in the UK winter in a forested area is probably not the same light level as South in a warmer country for example. They get good lighting and some afternoon sun in summer, but over winter there is hardly any sun anyway, it never comes around to hit the conservatory.
@tinajordan65913 жыл бұрын

Noid phalaenopsis is TORINO. 20:00
@TheOrchidRoom3 жыл бұрын
Thankyou 🥰 It could be about 4. It's a NoID complex hybrid. Unless I buy with an ID and it matches, it's a NoID to me. IDs placed on complex hybrids are often inaccurate. It doesn't matter unless you want to hybridise them, and then you couldn't use an ID you put on yourself anyway- that's when huge hybridised errors happen.
@TheSchmeddarling3 жыл бұрын
Annabel, is there a difference between phal liodoro and liodora? Mine is called liodora. Based on pictures an scent, i see no difference. The first catt is very beautiful 😊
@TheOrchidRoom3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why there is all the confusion about Phalaenopsis Sweet memory and it's clonal varieties. Phalaenopsis Sweet Memory is the hybrid name. "Liodoro" refers to a clonal variety. There are others such as Phalaenopsis Sweet Memory "Bubbles" or "Treva" which are other clones of the same hybrid. I would assume Liodora is a misspelling of the clone Liodoro, spread by all the confusion perhaps, but the name of the hybrid would be Sweet Memory. Perhaps Liodora is another clonal variety but it seems unlikely. When you breed orchids you get seedling populations, which are very genetically diverse and will all often have different flowers. Particularly good specimens of these may be showed and given an awarded name, like "Liodoro". If they are exceptional maybe they get taken forward for meristem cloning, and therefore all clones of that variety have the clonal name. One of the Orchidroots images gives Liodora as a synonym for Liodoro. I assume it was someone's name originally, so I would think only one is correct. www.orchidroots.com/detail/100069900/hybrid/?type=hybrid&tab=sum

I would be grateful if you could help me recover my cattleya Siam Jade from root rotten. Could you suggest me in which medium you would take care of it. Have a good rest of the day. Daisy fm Italy
@TheOrchidRoom3 жыл бұрын
Hi Daisy, It depends on what medium you like using, what works in your climate with your watering schedule. Cattleya can grow well in bark, bark and moss, semi-hydro with LECA, Lava rock, or any number of other media. It depends what you like growing in and what your climate is like. If you grow in a hot country a bark moss mix would be fine and allow to dry slightly between waterings, ideally on a 1 week wet to dry cycle. I.e, when you water the pot dries out by day 5-7 and then you rewater.
@daisyp75393 жыл бұрын

@TheOrchidRoom3 жыл бұрын
Your safest bet is probably a bark moss mix with the wet dry cycle above. Here's how I treat rootless Cattleya divisions: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKW3epeHptygmpI There aren't any shortcuts, just give it good conditions and it will make new growths and roots 🙃
