So excited to find this video. I've been looking for a comprehensive care video since buying my latouria three months ago. Right now I'm waiting for it to show signs of blooming and it's reassuring to know even a grower with your experience gets frustrated. Thank you so much.

I've been searching for a decent video on Latourias and was delighted when I discovered yours which was easy to listen to and full of good tips, clearly presented. I have quite a few Latouria types - I just love the look of their bulbs and flowers. I've been growing mine for a couple of years in a conservatory (in the UK). Winter temps go down to 12/14 degrees at night and average 19-20 by day, but summer temps can be fiercely hot up to 38/40 in the day and I struggle to keep them happy then as raising the humidity is a real struggle. But so far so good; I've not lost any. But I am struggling to get them to bloom. I'm not sure if this is because of the temps in winter or whether they are too young to bloom.

Get them more light and feed more during next growing season. This should stimulate flowers, you probably need more light as dendrobiums in general like more like, similar to cattleyas.

I am a little late but I am at the light part of the video, I’ve noticed spectabile likes tons of light. My favorite latouria I own is sherry abe, which is Peter shen x spectabile and it gets full sun pretty much all day and it loves it. Spectabile gets very large also, mines a young plant and has pseudobulbs nearing 2 feet in length They do like small temperature drops in fall/winter, but not much. I don’t let it get below 60-65f. They do alright with low humidity during the day but they need very high humidity at night, I live in the us south and the climate is perfect here for it

I bought a flowering size Fire Wings (maybe 40cm tall) over two years ago and it has been in continuous bloom since. The blooms last over 3 months sometimes and it won’t stop putting out spikes. I grow mine in windowsill in Puget Sound area in the states. Cool and dark and dont use much heating so humid but i have supplemental lights. It was in a bark, perlite, charcoal mix until recently but it seems to like all moss so far. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Hope your little guy gets sorted out soon. I definitely think it’s worth getting a flowering size one of these, but mine was only like 40 USD for a pretty big plant. Happy growing!

E K oh I’m jealous.. every time I think it’s doing well again.. something happens. It’s supposedly a 4N too so meant to be more vigorous..

Anything that has “Dendrobium phalaenopsis “ in it will really appreciate more heat they can withstand temps even at 95 degrees Fahrenheit as long as they have air circulation and water My latorias really are thirsty and I spray them daily and soak when the moss approaches dryness; (in 50% moss 50% medium bark mix) they seem happiest when their pseudobulbs are very plump I can see yours still have quite a few ridges they could probably use more water I have den green mist x convolutim which leaves have a shimmer to them and den schuetzei that has white flowers and leaves quite short in comparison they love water and air with vigorous roots hopefully both will rebloom in spring Thank you for sharing yours because you are right there’s not much information on these types

I love Latouria types. My Little Green Apples has been in almost continuous bloom for well over a year now. My record is 36 flowers at one time. It's super root bound now and needs repotted, was waiting for it to take a break to do it but it's looking like that's not going to happen. I would love to have as many as you have, but don't have the room. You have a lovely collection.

Michelle Lindsey ah I barely have the room either! Haha but couldn’t help myself. My thinking lately though is quality over quantity ;)

Oh dear, wish I could help on that. I just only recently, this year, got into the Latouria types. So my guess is as good as yours. Thank you for keeping us posted, I'll be doing my own video about these later this year. - M

I have one Latouria, Nora Tokunaga x Abberans and only after it got mounted it started growing, hoping for a few flowers next year. That green apples is to die for and very hard to get a hold of (I can't find it anywhere)

These look so good I just got a dendrobium atroviolaceum today. I know they are warm growers but do you think its okay for them to survive under grow lights in winter with 14-16 degrees inside as I don't use heater?
@OrchieDee
@OrchieDee 4 жыл бұрын
They should be ok if kept a bit drier I’d think but would probably be happier a few degrees warmer. The lights themselves will emit some heat so it may be a little warmer than you think anyway :)

How odd that the spectabile dropped all of those leaves. Mine will suffer through some chilly (5 C) nights without problems. Although, my winter months are the most humid even though they do not feel as humid as during summer. I do tend to let mine get pretty dry in the winter, whereas in the summer it is generally wet all the time.
@OrchieDee

Michael McCarthy that’s interesting. I read that spectabile is mostly found in lowlands upto 300m but they can be found at up to 2000m so there’s certainly going to be variability with cold tolerance in breeding lines. Our winters are generally humid too .. mean’s you can get away with drying them out, but mine hated life outside. Within a couple weeks chucked a big fuss... oops 🙊

Are they good east facing ? under direct light for 3/4 hours in the morning ? or they love west facing get evening light ? What media is best for them ? Hope i get the reply !!!! Note plz ঃ time lap 10min plant and next to that these 2 den I am making quarries i
@OrchieDee
@OrchieDee 5 жыл бұрын
Hamim CHOWDHURY yes East facing would also be great for them, as long as it’s still fairly bright the rest of the day too. I use a mix of small and medium bark for all my Dendrobiums and about 1/3 sphagnum.

Can you recommend me a nice looking latouria type that will grow in melbournes conditions?
@OrchieDee
@OrchieDee 5 жыл бұрын
David Mcmillan I think it would depend more on your growing conditions.. do you keep your orchids indoors? I wouldn’t have thought you could winter many outdoors in Melbourne... Check out the AOS article on Latourias and perhaps try an intermediate growing one your like the look of (I’d you can find one for sale :) : www.aos.org/orchids/orchids-a-to-z/letter-d/den-sec-latouria.aspx
