I Rescued a reduced sad looking Dendrobium and with your help after watching lots of your videos I identified it and now know how to care for it, it had been neglected at the garden centre where I was buying orchid potting medium for my Phals Keiki's, again I'd watched your great demonstrations on phal care and separating keiki's. Thank you.

I've recently found your channel and I have to say I love all your videos! You are so knowledgeable about orchids. And your videos are NOT boring, you move along and give a lot of information on whatever orchid you are discussing. I've been growing the phalans....for several years but am now branching out into the cattleyas and others and you have helped tremendously!! Thank you for your expertise!

In temperate climates, when you buy one from a greenhouse, they can stall for a year before making a new pseudobulb. Just always keep them over 15°C, West or South window, water when dry, and they will eventually make a new cane. Once adapted to temperate indoor, they do great. Also, CAREFULL. Producers often burry the canes when they pot them for sale to give the canes stability. You need to repot them, or at least "dig out" substrate so the base of the canes is at the surface of the medium, otherwise the "eyes" for new pseudobulbs, or new pseudobulbs starting, will rot in the substrate. Stake them for stability. Don't burry the canes. That last advice also applies for "Nobile type" Dendrobiums.

Familha Gaudir I found this to be true (the buried cane on the nobile) too. Luckily, I repot all of my orchids into semihydro and found the smallest cane buried under the medium. I've also found many, many "grocery store" Orchids that are planted in DIRT but have a covering of bark or sphagnum moss to dress up the look of the orchid. Again: I'm glad that I repot EVERY orchid that enters my home. Even the Catts, but I do it very gently.

I just rescued my first Dendrobium orchid from the clearance rack at Lowe’s. At a price of $8.00 due to the pot being shattered (I fixed it up. A lovely glazed clay/terracotta pot that was created with air holes) the flower spike is spent, and some, not all of the leaves are yellow. The root system looks great, and so do the canes! However I will be quarantining it from my other plants as should always be done.

Wonderful video...I just ran across some DenPhals at my Kroger's. First time I have ever seen them offered, it's always been Phals. I had to watch your video how to tell the difference. So now that I know, I will be able to grow them really well in my house. I think the large pink bloomed one has a slight fragrance. I also bought a small purple bloomed DenPhal. I think I'm going to go back and get a white one..yours is really pretty. At 25% off..I pay $8.99. Can't beat that..and if it doesn't work out for whatever reason. I'm not out too much. Really glad I don't have to over winter these. I ordered a Dendrobium kingianum..still not sure how to over winter it. I have watched countless videos..It seems kind of young. I might skip it this year. IDK. Thanks for the info!!

Appreciate that you took the time to make this video. I have been experimenting with my den-phals. Used to be able to grow them attached to trees (in s. FL USA), but that yard must have had different growing conditions than my current yard. So, since they were looking really bad (getting dehydrated) I removed them from the trees and have started repotting them. I'll let you know if they improve. My nobiles are in the same location in the yard - attached to the trees. They are thriving. Perhaps the difference is that the nobiles were mounted to the trees in the spring and had a chance to get their roots healthy before the fall. Agree with you on the temps for these orchids. Thanks for such a helpful video.

I bought two of these two years ago - they've really taken off since I repotted in bark. The one that was in coconut husk did ok but didn't really thrive, but the one in spaghnum moss did really badly. Both are doing brilliantly now they are in bark - I think the moss & coconut husk is too slow to dry out for the UK - they hardly ever needed watering in that medium, so of course, didn't get fed much either.

If you want to get these denphals for cheap. Like really reallly cheap. Just come to India a riot , a spectrum, a truckload of different colors are to be found and the are so damn cheap for their size. Like big blooming ones are for 600 ruppes(7euro) for four. Last year i got 15 medium sized ones for 1500 (18euros) only!!!!!!. And they are found pretty much all year round in the Northeast (from where i am) and the South . Please do come here for cheap orchids. You people will love it. And these are amazingly easy to grow so i have 21 of these alone! Oishanu, With lots of love from Assam😙

This orchid likes a very small pot. 2.5 inches pot with ventilation hole works well and use sphangum moss to cover all the roots. Water it when the moss is dry. The most important thing is this orchid likes warm temperature and not fluctuate much, keep it at the warmest point of the house.

Hi , I have several denphals doing really great in South Florida. I love you tutorial but would like to ask for your opinion on one issue that was not covered. The old, dry-looking stems. I do know that they contain nutrients and water and should not be cut. But some of them are several years old and are “stuck” in their dry state without leaves or any growth. So, the question is : at what point is it ok to remove/cut them? I could enclose pictures if that would be helpful. Love your channel, wishing you all the best!

I live in the Caribbean and keep the orchids in the shade on my veranda. I’ve soaked them in fertilizer and water twice for 10 minutes each time. Any idea how long it takes to see buds open? Am I doing something wrong?🤔

Hello Marlina! I truly believe that soaking is the best for most orchids. I soak my dendrobium for 25 to 30 minutes, once a week on summer! And 15 to 20 minutes on winter and bring them indoors. Sun for 2 hours in the morning and fertilize 2 times a month. It is a blessing to live in the Caribbean! Soak a little longer and I believe you might have BEAUTIFUL orchids blooms in no time. I hope this helps! 😜

My den phals have been growing growing growing very very well. I am a bit concerned though that none of my den phals have bloomed yet as they have kept growing and sending out new canes the moment the existing growing cane matures. Can a mature cane bloom even if a cane is still growing on the same plant? What are the blooming months for these types of orchids?

So does these plants need constant watering/watered- is that why you put a wick inside the pot? Do they like being constantly wet? Cause I was given a cutting and I’ve got in in a glass vase with water, and new roots are growing- but I’m noticing some are browning- is that normal or should I put in bark medium?

Would you know why the leaves on my oncidium twinkle are turning yellow and eventually browning and falling off? It has tons of roots and tons of pseudobulbs and 5-6 new growths, the only problem is the leaves. I've been told everything from too much light to under fertilized to over fertilized. The yellowing usually starts at the tip of the leaf or the center and spreads out/down.

MissOrchidGirl it's kept indoors in a temperature controlled room where it's around 70 degrees Fahrenheit and I have it in water culture. Plus, the humidity in our home is around 50% constantly. It's getting cooler soon so I'll see if maybe it was too hot for it.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 6 жыл бұрын
Nope 70 is not too hot. Well then my guess was wrong, tipically these orchids have issues in these departments. Then we must think about more serious problems, like nutrient deficiency or pest infestations, or even too cold water all the time. Hard to pin point it but you see better how it manifests. Check this out www.cloudsorchids.com/doctor/dspots.htm as a side note, sharry baby is related to twinkles, most things apply to both ;)

When repotting these, how do you tell if the roots are alive? Do you need to trim the dead roots like you would do on a phal? Do you have a video on this already that I have not watched?

Hi Danny,what is that yellow colour in your white den phal cane?is it due to more light exposure

Hi, it's not yellow, maybe that's how it looks on camera? It's the natural coloration for the white one.

@@sippigrrrl I just ran across some DenPhals at Kroger's here in Ohio...First time I have ever seen anything besides Phals at Kroger. The lady said she had ordered them for sweetest day. I'm not sure what part of the US you live, but if you have a Kroger's. It's worth a shot to check. It probably depends on each individual store. I have bought two at 25% off, and I think I'm going back to get another one. So excited to have different orchids available in my little town. Good luck!

Shell Leasure I live in New Orleans, we don’t have Kroger here! So lame! The orchids that I’ve managed to buy in person have mostly come from Trader Joe’s, and while they’re always blooming and just stunning, I have to immediately repot them, because they’re always potted in medium that’s questionable at best. I got two Cattleyas that were in what appeared to be dirt, with a bit of vermiculite thrown in to make it look a bit better. Luckily, my exploits have taught me to be very gentle while repotting my orchids, and most of the time, they’re not even set back anymore. I will definitely stop at Kroger the next time I see one, because they’re in Texas (Houston, plus there’s an IKEA there. ‘Nuff said.) and there are Krogers as close as Jackson, MS, which is two hours away, depending upon how bad the traffic is, plus our KZbin channel is taking video of road trips, so I think I can find a few places we haven’t been to yet, and they may happen to have a Kroger’s, and I’ll load up! I even go to the orange and blue home improvement stores and look at their stock. They think that all orchids require bright light, so all of the Phals are usually in rough shape, but I picked up a whole bunch of Dendrobium Nobiles that they assumed were dead because they had dropped their leaves and they weren’t flowering anymore. I got the whole clearance rack for about $1 for each plant, I let them keep the ugly decorative planter that I would have immediately removed anyway because I put all of my orchids in clear vases or clear plastic pots, that I drill two holes into an area about two inches up from the bottom to do my semihydro. They’ve always come back to life quickly and they’re happy! I have a phal that is deciding to send me a nice Christmas flower stalk. Their internal clocks get all messed up because they’re outside in the hot and humid weather and then they get taken inside when they’re not “pretty enough” anymore, and nobody even waters them. I’ll definitely have to make a pilgrimage to a Kroger’s, even just to get some decent produce! Thanks for the tip!

@@passiongarden387 but keep in mind,to give it high light,if you pot it in semihydro or selfwatering pot,and if you dont give it light and warm temp,then it will not do that good in semihydro, i personally grow them outside in 50% shade net,happy growing😊😊👍
