Order of the Arrow: Troop Positions in Scouting

The Order of the Arrow (OA) is Scoutings Honor Society and has many different positions. Two of these positions are within the unit. Most Scouters know about the Youth OA Representative position. There is also an adult position as an OA Representative that is very similar to an advisor to this youth position. This is a great way to give service back to the unit while representing the OA.

🔑 Show Notes: At the first live meeting, Todd Modgling ‪@MrModgling‬ Asked about OA Rep & OA-ASM Position. “If I’m a leader and would really like to be a representative for OA how would I approach that situation?”
• Far too many troops and crews don’t have an OA Youth Representative. There is an adult position like an advisor to the youth.
• In the OA Unit Service video, I talked mainly about being active in the troop/crew. Briefly talked about the OA Youth and Adult Representation.
• This leadership position qualifies for ranked advancement (Star, Life, and Eagle).
• Unit Reps should attend all Chapter meetings.
• At the unit meeting wear their OA sash only when “on-stage” representing the OA.
• The adult OA - ASM reports to the unit committee.
• The adult OA rep is the youth advisor to the youth OA rep.

I'm an Associate Lodge Advisor and we are anemic when it comes to Youth Reps and Troop Advisors. I shared this both personally and on our Lodge Page. It's an great explanation of why these positions are so important. Thanks for all you do! WWW

I Hate to say it Scouter Stan, but Sadly Not every Unit Dose have a Represenitive for the OA 😶

That's unfortunate. If there are any OA brothers in that troop, they should become by default the OA Representative of that troop. It's a matter of stepping up to do cheerful service. YIB🔺

There are many troops that don't even do the OA program. They refuse to allow elections because it can be viewed as excluding some scouts (since you have to be elected into it). Additionally, there are other troops that allow elections but instruct their scouts to vote for everybody so their entire troop is OA. Both of these extremes effectively reduces the value of the OA.

@colin1818 - I have found that there are Troop Leaders who firmly believed that the Order of the Arrow steals away their older Scouts. If they thought it through, it's just the opposite. Keeping older Scouts involved, keeps them in the Troop. As for units that automatically “vote for everyone on the ballot” there's not much you can do about it. Have the adult OA Advisor talk with the Unit Leaders before the election. The Scout still needs to be qualified to be on the ballot. It's always amazing how there always seems to be a barrier of some kind. Keep up the good work my brother and we will save a place for you at the tribal fire. YIB🔺
