i knew all about this movie but i put it off just like you. i knew that timothy shines in this movie. i actually like him, but since it's a family drama i expected it to be super manipulative. timothy has a movie with sean penn, it's super awesome, it's a movie i'll never forget and it tells a true story.

These reviews of forgotten classics are great! I don't mind this Oscar win even if there were some films that year which were technically better. 1980 was absolutely stacked and again, a lot of the unnecessary hate for this movie is based on other films that missed out. Quite similar to your Shakespeare in Love review. Once again like the Truman Show from 98, some of the best films weren't even nominated for best picture eg the empire strikes back, the shining, and then there's the nominated film that missed out that most feel should have won ie Raging Bull like Saving private Ryan in 98. Timothy Hutton is exceptional in this. I love that he won the oscar. Often, they won't give it for a breakthrough performance and wait for them to get a bit older. It would have been amazing if Haley Joel Osment won for the sixth sense as well, which was a similar situation. One of the great mysteries that Hutton's career didn't take off after this. I love all the performances, Hirsh, Sutherland and Tyler Moore. I agree that one scene she has looks a bit awkward, but overall I think she's exceptional playing such a difficult role. The family dynamic is so unique in this film having the mum as essentially the villain, that was a risk. But it's still complex as the mum is a product of her upbringing and the pressure she's faced to maintain appearances. Keep these reviews of modern classics coming. 😊

One of the few Best Picture Winners that I agree with, though I would've been just as happy with Raging Bull and The Elephant Man winning. My Dinner With Andre, Possession, Thief, Mad Max 2 and Body Heat are my other picks for best of that year. Mary Tyler Moore is the highlight of the film. She is saddled with the most difficult task as an actor and she nails it.

Saw all the best pictures since 1970 and out of africa bored me a bit but this one is really good , it received criticism because it won best picture, many critics and people wanted Raging bull to win .

@@JustinBonnici-l2u I certainly think RB is better crafted on a technical front but it didn't hit me in the feels on the level that this film did. And that's the biggest part of rating a movie for me personally. It could be the most technically well crafted movie on the planet, but if I don't feel anything, it's meaningless.

@@BryanLomax I rate raging bull higher but I rewatch ordinary people more it's my kind of drama. I heard in your review that it was not your favourite movie of the 1980 and i assume raging bull is not either , what are your favourite movies from that year ? If you don't mind me asking. I,saw around 60 movies from that year and my favourite are The shining Raging bull Somewhere in time ( Time travel romance starring Christopher reeve) Superman 2 John Carpenter's The fog David lynch's The elephant man Brian de palma's Dressed to kill The Changeling ( Horror movie starring George C Scott) The long good Friday ( starring Helen mirren and Bob Hoskins)

@BryanLomax we're in agreement on many films. I haven't seen Bronco Billy and the exterminator. And I forgot to mention the blues brothers from that year and I liked airplane but not a top 10 for me. My biggest disappointment that year was stardust memories by woody allen , he's one of my favourite director and that's one of he's few films that I didn't like
