As a stills photographer, here are some features I would like to add on to take advantage of Ai combined with the mirrorless high frames per second: for landscapes : Ai analyze the exposure and automatically exposure bracket if needed; have a built in DOF calculator and automatically focus bracket the appropriate steps rather than my guessing at it. For group shots and portraits : automatically take enough photos with different focal points until you have a collection that includes a sharp focus of each face, with the eyes open, for later photo merge. For action shots : analyze if there is subject motion blur and automatically take additional photos while changing the speed until the motion is frozen (like auto shutter speed bracketing). For the PZ-E2 : lock on a moving subject (like a dog or child) and automatically zoom in/out to keep it in the center 75% of frame if I am not tracking well enough. Maintain focus while zooming.

The R5ii noise problem isn't just for big lenses. I used the R5ii for editorial photography last fall and, for anything before about 9:00 a.m. on clear days, every R5ii image had to be run through denoise software to be usable. It worked. But it added another step (and a lot more time for a full shoot) to the publication process. This wasn't true of the original R5 and it's not true of the R1.

I'm back from Thailand and I noticed 2-3 things that bother me. - Autofocus drops out when there are objects on different planes with a high dynamic range between them (focusing on a bright point). It sucks, the AF is lost and sometimes forced to switch to manual. - A laborious mode change on the dial. (exit from pause, click to go to the modes and move... It's long without assigning a button when all are already busy) - The image quality (noise) in low light (and we quickly reach 12800 in the city). So yes, we have software but it's very frustrating to see a file "dirtier" than a file taken with the Canon 6D or the 5d IV. I don't remember that I had to "clean" my images so much before working on them.

Some things I'd really like to see addressed/added in firmware: 1.We need a better way of setting custom white balance. The current method is absolutely inexcusable at this point. Let me point the camera at something, hit a button, and take a custom white balance reading. Needing to switch to photo mode, take a photo, go into the menu to select that photo, and then switch the WB over to custom is just too many steps. I don't see why there can't be an option when switching to custom white balance to capture/apply a reading. 2. False color is effectively unusable in its current implementation, would love to see it be functional with view assist enabled, or be smart enough to disable view assist when toggled on. 3. Likewise, having waveforms is great, but its implementation leaves a lot to be desired. Even just having the ability to position where it is on screen or adjust its opacity would be a huge win. 4. Would love to have the ability to save more than 3 custom modes. When doing run and gun video I typically map C1 to 24fps, C2 to 60fps, and C3 to 120fps with the appropriate shutter speeds. This works great, but I would love 2 or 3 more custom modes to which I could map a RAW or 8k configuration to quickly switch to. This seems like it would be easy to implement. Having only 3 seems like an arbitrary and unnecessary limit. 5. Would love to see an expansion of what buttons can be customized to do specific functions. Again this seems like low hanging fruit. As far as I can tell this would be simple to implement, and when dealing with professional equipment the ability to customize the tool is king. 6. This one is random, but on the 5D IV in photo mode there was a way to bring up two photos side by side. I used this ALL THE TIME in my studio work to compare/reference previous shots to current ones. For some reason they removed this function on the R5 Mark I. I would absolutely love to have this feature back. 7. I'd love to see some refinement or user customizable way to set the LCD screen picture orientation. I frequently will have the LCD flipped out 90 degrees to the camera body when shooting with it at hip level, and the moment I want to tilt the screen back for better viewing, the picture orientation automatically flips itself upside down. It drives me crazy and leaves me with no way to view the LCD when standing on the side of the camera. 8. Really wish they would allow the 1/3 grid overlay to remain visible during video recording. Currently you can have it visible, but the moment you hit record it disappears. Having it there is incredibly helpful, and I can't think of a reason not to allow it during recording. 9. I'm still not totally happy with their AF subject locking during video. I know they added the ability to set subject detect AF to "detect only", and that's definitely a step in the right direction, but when tracking a subject that isn't human/animal/vehicle, the moment line of sight is broken, the camera abandons tracking that particular subject. Sony AF is sticky as all hell in this regard and will actually re-acquire tracked subjects when line of sight is re-established. I would absolutely love to see something similar here. 10. To my knowledge, this is the only item on this list that might actually be limited by hardware, but anything they can do to to increase the quality of the line skipped modes is always a plus. 11. When shooting video with an external monitor attached, pressing the menu button causes the camera LCD to go black and the menu is only visible on the external monitor. I can't for the life of me figure out why this is the way it is, but it existed on the R5 as well and it's incredibly frustrating. Seems like an easy fix or certainly something they could give an option for.

EL Zone is better than false colours for sure. Some sort of AI white balance would be perfect. FCPX has it and it works very good most of the time. I love my R5 Mark2s and improved "eye control." For anyone troubled with Eye-control, try this valuable tip. From the Green menu settings, disable the distracting target spot that follows eye movements. Now, I can look around the viewfinder for another target without that stupid spot trailing my gaze. When I look at a target, I press and hold my AF-ON (back button to focus and track the subject). Spotting a new target, I quickly release the back focus button and press it again to refocus, and voilà - I'm in new focus! This still requires hand-eye coordination, but without the distracting moving spot, I'm much more comfortable using eye control. Be sure to calibrate in both the landscape and portrait modes. The same applies in the R1.

@robertatwell76156 сағат бұрын
Simon, I guess that what I am trying to say is that with the release of the R5 II Canon did things that caused Most users of this level of hybrid camera to abandon their current batteries, buy a new grip due to the power consumption, and disabled functionality of the R5 II if you did not use the new battery. They improved the autofocus performance and upgraded the video performance. The stills photography performance in low light high iso range of light intensity is problematic at the 6400 and 12800 settings. I don’t know why this is given the improved video performance but I know it is real. Maybe it’s the way Canon has handled the issue internally with its Log profiles and internal noise reduction. I think that for most of us we just want clean images with good dynamic range and we don’t want to take a step back with a new version of an existing camera model which is what the R5 II is. The only thing that might make sense in all of this is that going forward we might just be seeing stills photography a simple video frame extraction process that possesses quality similar to raw still image files. 8 K video already is pretty good and 12 K video would effectively have the same resolution as today’s high resolution still cameras. In any event it would be interesting to see the quality of frame extraction from 8K shot in Log. What do you think?
@MattRamseyTube17 сағат бұрын
In addition to your suggestions, I hope to see an improvement of the pixel shift from the original R5, and the cropped 6K RAW like the R5C has. Also seems like it should be able to do cropped 2k240, since it can do cropped 2k, and it can do 2k240. In fact, the highest available cropped frame rate is 120p, and I hope a firmware update will feature cropped 240p in SOME resolution.

Have you been able to use pixel shift successfully outside of a studio ? IMHO pixel shift is impractical when there is any movement of either the camera or the subject.
@robertatwell761515 сағат бұрын
Simon, Until they make the R5 II at least as good as the R5 for high iso values the R5 II is a good video camera but not a candidate for upgrade by stills photographers. Let’s face it once you add the grip and then buy 3 or four extra batteries you are double the cost of the R5 when buying new via Canon Price Watch. The R5 II has become a true bargain camera for middle to high end videographers but a boat anchor for stills photographers. I think that Canon is going to lose out to Sony because the Sony Alpha 1 is close to the Canon R5 II in price and the Sony Alpha 1 Mk II is not too much more expensive. I think that the coming Nikon Z9 II will also shake up the market for stills photographers. Finally, on a positive note the new Canon Z lenses are absolutely stunning. Their pseudo cinematic lens technology in a weatherproof design at this price range is brilliant. I recognize greatness in this portion of Canon’s R lineup but I will definitely not be upgrading to the R5 II as it is not an improvement for what I do in stills photography. For videographers like you it is a worthy upgrade. Maybe that’s the intent. Maybe this is the start of the bridge between video and stills frame extraction from video?

The reason I haven't purchased an R5 Mark II to replace my two R5 Mark I 's. 1: Dynamic range for sure. 2 Equally as important for me is the ability to switch to video mode using the MFN button and my right hand cuz I'm a wildlife photographer and often shooting with a 600 F4. Switching between stills and 3 video modes is important to me. I could no longer do that with my R6 Mark II and for that reason sold it after a couple of weeks in spite of its improved autofocus , which is why I bought it in the first place as a compliment to my R5s. Hi Simon, now the baseline of the R5ii has proven to be rather stable, a next fw update can provide a few new features besides keeping on fixing smaller issues 🙂 With the overheating concerns covered, I'm also hoping we'll be getting 4k fine 60fps, which may generate a bit more processing heat compared to the current modes. What would excite me even more would be getting 4k fine 120fps in a later phase 🙈 I do support your question for open gate .. but the more I think about this, for stills I'm not sure which extra pixels it could provide which are skipped from shooting 8k raw in 3/2 ratio. Regarding dynamic range in stills, I understood from photonstophotos this mostly related to low ISO settings, where also the Nikon Z8/9 has an advantage. But on higher ISO the loss in DR over the R5 is minimal in my experience, and here it remains better than both stacked Nikons. Using DxO PhotoLab I'm actually seeing less noise in high ISO images compared to the R5, because the denoise quality of DxO increased more than enough to negate what the R5ii lost over the R5 ;-) Also the R5ii needs less light to focus better, and the much reduced rolling shutter allows me now use ES all the time instead of sticking to EFCS. On the R5 in EFCS, the fps reduced drastically when using 50% of battery capacity. In combination I can now get 5 times more images from a single battery. As a result I don't feel the need for a battery grip. But I agree for video they remain strongly recommended! Regarding customizations, being able to customize extra buttons would be very welcome indeed. It would also help being able to assign some extra functions to the MyMenu: I strongly welcome the new register/recall focus position feature, but like some (not yet tested) eye-control functions, they can only be assigned to buttons, not yet to MyMenu. And I'm running out of available buttons 🙈! Recalling focus position with the 'Set' button makes sense to quickly recall focus position if the AF suddenly fancies the background. To register it the 200-800 has a lens button, but the 100-500 doesn't have it and then MyMenu would be useful for second-level fast actions when the first level fast actions take up the available buttons.

Thanks for the update Simon. I’m fortunate enough to have the R5ii and the R1. I do mostly wildlife so I have been gravitating to the R5ii most of the time. If there was any way to increase the megapixels on the R1 it would certainly make it a much more desirable camera. I got the fan version of the battery grip for the R5ii. It has been great but make sure the tightening wheel remains tight or you may have some power off issues. As well the pre shooting feature is great but can create heat even though you may not be actually taking pictures. I had purchased the non fan grip version first but it has not been back on the camera since getting the fan version. I’m happy we can control the fan speed as well. I would like to see security features introduced to both camera. They are a significant investment that can easily walk away. Either ability to insert an apple air tag for tracking or a biometric sensor to restrict use. Most important for me: 30+ megapixels Low light performance Noise reduction Managing the amount of frames at all settings including pre-shooting. It would be great to have a line in the menu to show the shutter count. It is the first question asked when trying to sell a camera.

IMHO, "noise" is almost irrelevant, what with the likes of DXO Pure Raw and Topaz Photo AI and Topaz Video AI.

Noise is mainly relevant because (with the R5ii) it requires that extra step in post. Yes, we can buy software to make the images look better . . . but why should we have to?

@@billmartin1010 I'm doing all my editing inside DxO PhotoLab 8 .. so it's great denoising is included automatically and I don't have to subscribe to Adobe ..

As others have commented, the ability to program pre-shooting to a button would be at the top of my wish list. We'll see what happens...
