Never had any content outside of comments get yanked. KZbin once made the mistake of making veiled threat against me for something I posted once and I let them know that trying to deal with me in that way would result in legal action and that the email (which I still have) would be all the evidence needed to convict the representative. They shut up real quick and left me and my posts alone for about 8 months after that, but the swamp slowly seeped back into censoring my posts here and there with "errors" that prevent them from posting.

@@Jameson1776 The ability to burst a steel pipe doesn't mean it should be classified as an explosive, you could fill a steel pipe with liquid nitrogen or air and cap it and run, it will create the same effect, maybe even better due to a higher pressure and gas volume, yet liquid nitrogen is not classified as an explosive, far from it. Thermite is about as far from an explosive as it gets, it generates extremely small amounts of gas (mostly steam from residual moisture in the material) which makes it poorly suited for any explosive purpose.

The classical Iron oxide thermite may not be able to cause an explosion, but more exotic and faster burning thermites can. There is a video by Cody's Lab where he shows how copper Thermite can explode when confined in a pipe (basically making a pipe-bomb). Styropyro also showcased a bunch of exotic thermites in an old video and some of them burned extremly fast and would most likely explode.

I'm pretty sure if you added some extra oxidizers in with your thermite you could get a pretty good bang, however this is not thermite on its own. Something that does have the potential to go bang on its own would be a magnesium thermite, a very good idea to not mess around with this.

Fought you would get an explosion that didn't snuff the reaction . That said , aluminum is a very useful.ingredient in lots of explosive mixtures . It's a pretty good reductant( fuel ) , and , in combination with an appropriate oxidizer ( various nitrate and perchlorate salts commonly , nitric acid , dinitrogen tetroxide , and a host of different fluorine compounds ) can certainly get stuff done . The caveat is it has to be fast , and , exothermic . Thermite is hot , but too slow . The rest are not generally so hot , but , fast enough to really.move.things around . Tannerite to solid rocket boosters , welding railroad tracks , it's even been used as an insane cutting torch with powdered aluminum as the fuel and gaseous fluorine as the oxidizer . I would love to see sScrewTubes reaction to a recreation of such a torch . You could probably detect the autistic screeching with the Voyager probes . .

I'm gonna be the "well actually" guy to and say that IRON thermite isn't an explosive, but I know at least one other thermite that is explosive. I actually would have thought you could make a bomb from iron thermite too, so thank you for disproving that so thoroughly! Hopefully KZbin is going to come to it's senses one of these days..

I had a thought, could you guys do improvised shaped charge vs improvised protection system? A shape charge you'd normally use to penetrate a lot of steel sitting on a steel box with some stable explosive inside it to see whether the charge will punch through as if the box was empty or will the explosion actually stop the blast

The original Al/Fe thermite mix is not explosive, but you can mix it in a different way using a different oxide and it can be a slow explosive. Somewhere in the Scandinavian part of the northern hemisphere they made a video with it.

What about copper thermite? The boiling point of copper metal is below the temperature of the aluminothermic reaction in which its oxide (either one of them) engages, and so as the metal is created it instantaneously evaporates, expanding to something like 32,000X its solid volume. This may not be classed as an explosive (legally or scientifically - it is definitely still a deflagration), but it certainly behaves in a way that could convince the average viewer that it was explosive. This is because the reaction is extremely fast, and confining it is extremely unwise (unless you are quite far away) as the reaction goes closer to completion in a confined space (left open, most of the reagents are scattered about before they can react), resulting in higher pressures and considerable shrapnel. Cody from Cody's Lab had to remove a video where he used 500 grams of copper thermite in a pipe (yes, a pipe...even he commented on how that looked, AS HE CONTINUED TO SHOW VIEWERS THE ENTIRE PROCESS), and set it off it in a quarry (while hiding behind cover, a good distance away)...and believe me, his copper thermite-filled pipe created a much more spectacular result than you guys' iron thermite-filled pipe (maybe not as impressive as the flash powder example, but shrapnel did end up 30-40 meters away). I'm pretty sure he got a strike from this, and from other similar videos, back when KZbin started cracking down on content, and truly examining videos that had been up for many years (in some cases) which depicted what they consider to be dangerous behavior. That said, I have seen many videos showing copper thermite reactions that have not been given strikes or required to be taken down. So clearly, KZbin is quite inconsistent in how they apply their "rules" (scarequotes because they aren't rules if they don't apply to everyone equally).

A magnesium thermite would probably be the closest we would get to boom. Plenty of oxygen and very reactive along with aluminum adding even more oxygen and being able to sustain combustion on its own.

I am just looking for clarification. Does thermite only refer to one chemical mix? I thought it referred to a class of self oxidizing reactions, some of which react much more rapidly and violently than the Iron oxide/aluminum formulation. If the name does not only refer to one formulation how can you more clearly refer to only this formulation in the future?

Well, regular thermite isn't explosive, BUT, try using black copper oxide (CuO) or lead dioxide (PbO2). The thermite will burn as fast as blackpowder. If you use magnesium instead of alluminium you get basically a flash powder. I've tried all of this recipies personally.

You could maybe make a thick sealed, solid container like steel explode if you put in thermite and some sort of material that decomposed into oxygen+something upon heating. Maybe like plane oxygen generators. Just saying. A lot of stuff may produce expansion upon chemical change in a sealed container.
