Just on the other side of the homelessness we see everyday are families with a tenuous grip on housing. Some of them are running out of options. With rents climbing, a number of people in the Portland area are facing eviction and homelessness as they struggle to find affordable housing.

I learned a lot of lessons in life. Here is a couple, 1) it's better to be in control of a situation, not at the mercy of it. 2) When you desperately need help, nobody wants to help you. When you do not require any help at all, that's when people want to help you.

@bmoshareholderappleshare, easy for you to say given your position in life. Not everyone has the kind of money you probably have. Plus, as most people know, most people (or companies, hedge funds, etc.) who gobble up the apartment building stock want to rent it out “at whatever price the market will bear”. Which is corporate speak for only people who make close to or above six figures can afford the rent. Which is a travesty because the vast majority don’t earn even close to that.

Their are not enough low income homes. I dislike the disingenuousness of the you need to just go through homeless support systems to get help . There are not enough homes / apartments period. The multi family industry has been sounding the alarm for half a decade now about the disaster that is portlands inclusionary zoning and how that has stunted growth. The urban growth boundary is a huge problem. Instead of actually fixing the root of the problem, the government pretends to care and adds affordable housing at a cost of $350k a unit during a time when average sales of existing places were selling for $187k a unit.

In the UK, half of property providers (yes, HALF) have sold their properties in the past three years. This is a result of renting out property no longer being financially viable, due to the numerous high costs incurred before making a penny profit, and also abusive tenants who wreck properties and cause financial loss and serious stress and hassle. These tenants ruin things for the good tenants. The UK government is putting more and more financial obligations and risk on property providers, thinking this will make matters better for tenants, whereas the outcome is the reverse.

Of course it is. The root of the problem started when the government told people they didn’t need to pay their rent, and they couldn’t be evicted. As a result many tenants “criminals” didn’t. Therefore it’s been going on 2 yrs & still many landlords got nothing. And the politicians are making laws that further empower the tenants”criminals”. As a result across the country landlords sell to outside investors whom raise the rent to once & for all get rid of them. It’s just too bad that the few good tenants are caught up in this government fueled mess. As of right now I have 3 apts that I won’t rent b/c of this. I’m waiting for the investors. There has been a lot of discussion about this in the UK recently. Of course there are some instances where mold (mould in the UK) is due to water ingress such as leaks. However, many examples are due to the failure of people to open windows, use extractor fans in bathrooms and who dry wet laundry including on radiators. It's essential to properly air your home every day and avoid actions that cause condensation, which can cause and aggravate mold/mould, which can be hazardous to health.

You are right that with many of these homeless videos, there is a lot of crying to reporters, but often behind the story there is another explanation, which is that some people do not take responsibility for planning their lives and assessing risk properly. I saw a video about a woman who was being evicted, who evidently spent a considerable amount of money on clothes, accessories, false nails, jewelery etc. She was crying that she was being evicted. However, the real story was that she had chosen to live in a house that was far too large for her needs, which was crammed full of furniture and furnishings. In addition, astonishingly, she rented a whole second house to store even more of her stuff. She had chosen not to pay rent for many months and was being rightly evicted: the landlord had actually been patient and had tried to negotiate with her, without success. She was being totally irresponsible and not dealing with her life appropriately, but still felt entitled to report a sob story to a reporter.

Thanks for your comment. There is the same issue in the UK, where politicians always talk about families only and never about single people. Of course, families are important, but why do they ignore a large section of the population? Because that sounds more empathetic if they talk about families only. It can be a lot more expensive to live alone, as there is no sharing of costs.

Why are landlords considered bad? They are running a business like any other. The fact that they make money is bad? Why are landlords always expected to take losses? Do you expect other business owners to? Like your mechanic? Hairdresser? Grocery store? No. Why landlords? They have done what they had to to obtain property, taken on the responsibility and risk to make a living but people expect them to ‘give me a break’ or ‘wait til i get paid’. @@michellehyatt4643 covid really did a number on the housing market. Every year before covid, people who could no longer afford a place would move out (or get evicted) and move in with mom and dad or whoever will take them. There was always a freeing up of places as new people moved in and new households were form. The eviction moratorium meant nobody moved out. Landlords got compensated by the government for the people who didn’t move out (as they should have) and new households were formed. Add insult to injury with the lack of building going on and that has caused a huge spike in rents. Of the 42 units I had just risen the rents 9.9% on, 7 moved out out in May because of it. I had multiple applications for all 7 units before I could even get them turned. It is crazy out there. But I don’t think this will last. There is a recession brewing right now. Rent increases will probably peak this summer or fall. Rents won’t go down but they should stop the vertical climb they have been doing.

This Women needs to contact HUD FEDERAL OFFICE AND the ADA. These are listed as violations of the ADA. AS her request for repairs are A DENIAL OF REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS for a disabled person. Civil right violations. The problem is that the states do have HUD offices that are called housing authority. But in reality with all the fair housing laws I’m the books both state and federal there is NO AGENCY ACTIVELY ENFORCING ANY OF THE LAWS UNDER THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT of 1974. Or ENFORCEMENT OF THE ADA! More and more laws are enacted and still no agency to enforce them exist. Tenants are told they have to PROSECUTE THE CASE THEMSELVES IN CIVIL COURT. Well how do the criminal sanctions come out of a court that only holds subject matter jurisdiction over non criminal issues? They can’t ! And this leaves a tenant in their own. Where I live in RIVERSIDE COUNTY CA there is not one … not one tenant rights attorney. Nor can I find one ADA civil rights attorney to take my case. The CA DEFH closed my case without investigating properly because the ELDER ABUSE department opened a case for failure to provide heat or habitable home. Yet failed to act leaving me in jeopardy in a home with black mold, severe rat infestation dating back to 2006. No properly working electricity, no heat, no AC, contaminated Ventilation system as rats chewed homes into the vent system and are living inside the ducts. Insulation. Pouring out of the vents in every room. The realtor put Illegal poison ban by the state of CA to kill my emotional support animal. I moved out and three months later they started an eviction action against me. Which destroyed my credit making it even harder to rent. I live on social security and spousal support. I lost my roomate through this. The rents have increased almost double in the 18 months of this. I can’t afford to pay 3200.00 a month to rent a small low income 55plus rental . 55 plus communities are not affordable here anymore. Instead they are communities allowed to age discriminate. Using the false pretense of protecting seniors in fixed incomes from being priced out of the market. All a scam ! Our law makers are responsible for all of this. The bar association only represents landlords. Completely discriminatory but they police themselves. I see 1.8 million homeless in LA. How many are disabled people with VA disability or social security? Elders? Who are discriminated against because of source of income. It took me 8 years to get a property manager to first let me apply, then let me rent . And he turned out to be a slum lord who thought I’d be so desperate to rent I would ignore the house was not habitable. This has to stop! Where is HOUSING AUTHORITY? All states get funding from HUD, FROM THE ADA. Why is there no legal help? Why is there no governing agency prosecuting gross civil right violations ? All it will take is examples made of cases like this to make those in the bussiness of Civil Right violations denying Fair Housing civil rights to get a message across that they are being policed against this behavior!

With mold (mould in the UK), it is necessary to investigate and ascertain the reason for it. If it is due to leaking pipes, these have to be repaired. It is not just a case of cleaning, although this is essential, too. Every room needs to be property aired, with windows opened every day, using extractor fans in bathrooms and avoiding dripping laundry or hung on radiators, to avoid the problem of mold/mould through condensation, which can easily be resolved by installing good habits in home use.

@CandiceMMartinez
@CandiceMMartinez 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not a landlord but I can see why they don't care. It's a business. Your business brain always needs to be separated from your emotional brain. I'm an engineer now but I was a dancer for many years back in the day. I managed to climb up because I kept my business brain and emotional brain separated. I never cared about the men because they were just money to me. If I would have allowed myself to care, I might have gotten stuck in that lifestyle. Business has no room for emotions.
@niya_gbisland
@niya_gbisland 2 жыл бұрын
@@CandiceMMartinez you're a cold piece, there's a difference between residential and commercial. If you're dealing with commercial properties that is a business. When you're dealing with single family homes you have to have sympathy, it's a give and take. Of course you don't let people run all over you.
@eckankar7756

so many of these people don't care about themselves. The pink woman is smoking and complaining she can't breath, her home is a mess, maybe if she cleaned and stopped smoking she'd breath better and have more money.
@Lucienne-zz1sw
@Lucienne-zz1sw Жыл бұрын
I am sorry if you've had problems, but it is absolutely essential to separate your emotions from the fact that the property provider is operating a business, and has to make a profit to keep operating. The property provider is not a parent or a social housing provider. The fact that you have been in a property for many years is totally irrelevant; it is your rental agreement and if you and the property provider are complying with your obligations now that count. If you get this the wrong way round and get emotional, you will not help yourself, especially if you are given notice and have to move. Separate your emotions from the business arrangement, even if it is your home.

@@thebastardgift Some of these people are retirees, elderly, and disabled. They pay 30% - 40% of their monthly income on rent. HUD pays the remaining portion of the rent. Housing is an essential human need, especially when people are disabled. If you believe their housing should be temporary, where do you expect them to go? Rents are out of control throughout the country and many require tenants make 3x the monthly rent to even be considered. Nursing homes cost around $4,000/ month - Should these people all go live in much more expensive housing on taxpayers?
