Hello, everyone - First, we'd like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who watched our story, and to everyone who took the time to comment. A quick update: Two weeks ago I was able to return to work at a new company with some incredible people. We WILL survive this. I truly have the best friends a man could ever wish for. Property taxes, insurance, cost of repairs and maintenance have dramatically increased too, but there was no mention of that in this story. Case in point, one of our rental houses had property taxes DOUBLE IN ONE YEAR. And when the government mandates higher wages, mandates inspections, licensing, rental licensing, well gee, the rent goes up. Instead of blaming landlords, we should get our government in order.

WA needs a rent cap like we have in OR. If you have lived in a rental for a year or more, the landlord can't raise your rent more that a set amount (currently about 9.9%). They also can't evict without cause.
@BobSmith-mp8ld

"They also can't evict without cause." This is why 150% rent increases like this happen. The landlord wants the property empty so they can do something better with the land, but since state laws force them to give absurd excuses to remove tenants the landlords just raise rents to force them to leave.

I remember paying $450/month for rent in a decent 2BR 2BA apt in 2000. I was divorced and raising two kids with no problems. I was making $15/hr at the phone company. It’s crazy how much the cost of living continues to rise and ppl aren’t making livable wages to support themselves. Let’s not factor in childcare. That expense can put you out of the game easily.

When I was single and lived alone in 2005, I rented a 2,000 sf, brand new home for $1200 a month. My salary was 80k. You could get a nice 2 bdr apartment for $700. When I got divorced in 2015, I had to move out from the marital home because I made almost 3x my spouse’s salary…. and was thrown into rental housing once again….. $1300 was now the going rate for a 2 bdr apartment. Almost doubled in 10 years, while wages stayed stagnant. I left that job for 80k back in 2009- TODAY it’s 2022, and THAT JOB STILL STARTS AT 80k. The large home I previously rented was $2200 in 2015 and post pandemic, it’s $3200. My 2 bdr apartment went from $1500 pre pandemic to $2200 post. And I’m retired. All I want is a place for my dog to run, and at 61, I have accepted I will never have that…. After working for over 35 years, working my way up thru education and hard work, sometimes working 2/3 jobs and raising kids-spent many years with literally zero days off! 😵‍💫 I never dreamed it would be like this, but I am grateful to be alive, so there’s that 👍🏽

The Middle class is being squeezed into poverty. There will soon be the super rich and very poor. This whole system is collapsing and there will be more hardships to come. Society is in moral decay, people can't afford medicine, food, gas housing the basics of life. The American people have a right to life as part of that right to life we shouldn't be price gouged into homelessness by landlords and real estate agencies so that can grow richer and the people poorer. The same for grocery stores and food manufacturers they are price gouging as well. I’ve been screaming about this for 2 years, when I kept seeing everyone around me working 2 jobs and they still couldn’t afford rent! Or preventative OR emergent health care! Or medications! Or good food for their kids, like fresh fruits and vegetables! Both parents worked more than one job; their children were raised by strangers at daycares; they felt hopeless and like they’ve failed, just scraping by for food, rent and utilities, IF THEY COULD EVEN *FIND* A PLACE THEY *QUALIFIED* FOR-and of course, each place requires a separate $50 application fee! In the 1950s, one parent could support the family on ONE FULL TIME JOB, eventually affording a house of their own! The family had a car, nice clothes, and took vacations to gramma’s house every summer. If the kids wanted to go to the movies, they babysat, mowed lawns, picked berries, and washed windows! When I was a kid in the 60s, my after school & weekend wages for a GOOD week could be $30! I could go the the movies and buy soda and popcorn for my little brother and me, for a total of $6 FOR BOTH OF US! If a family wants to go to the movies *today*, it’s literally $100 for a family of 4 😳. It’s heartbreaking, honestly……to have a strong work ethic, and not be able to support yourself or your family. This story states MORE THAN 50% OF RESIDENTS IN CLARK COUNTY PAY more than 30% of their income in rent. With that statement alone, you can kiss the middle class goodbye. Exorbitant rents leave ZERO money to save to buy a home. The rich get richer and everyone else is a slave to their need to have $10 million homes, because $5 million homes, well it’s just so last year-they have an Instagram image to maintain ya know! Clark County is gonna start looking like Santa Rosa CALIFORNIA and Portland OREGON VERY SOON. CLOCK IT! The lady from the homeless organization states people can’t work just one job- and the CONCLUSION is that many people are going to be living in situation they don’t want to-including being homeless. How does that count as an allowable solution? How is that OK? Good tenants for 3 years, and a 150% increase. How is that ok?

We have ALL been hoodwinked with their black magic potions and tricks for years and years......the demonics are raking in trillions as they kill people and make people suffer and conduct their power and resource grab. Much of the damage has already been done. Most of us only see it in hindsight. I can tell you this: God's wrath is about to come down on them like the world has never seen! This is a fact that people can choose to not believe at their own peril. Or they can choose God and His divine promises for His people.

According to our "leaders" each person should be working 4 jobs - 4 for mom and 4 for dad. Leave the children home alone - they'll manage to take care of themselves. Then they could afford to pay the ridiculously high rent (properties bought by Corporations/Hedge Funds/Wall Street and Politicians) - and put some food on the table. They need to get rid of that car which uses too much gasoline - which is now unaffordable. They need to get around on bikes and scooters - and, in some case, they could hitch-hike!!!!! Their Plan is Working!!!!

Looked what happened the last time the ‘govt’ got involved in private business. They forced landlords to house people for free for 2 years while the squatters could’ve paid and didn’t. Then they didn’t even have to pay back rent. The tax payers did and it wasn’t even full amounts. Landlords are sick of taking losses for their business. Time for the consequences of landlords housing people for free all while paying taxes, insurance, maintenance and mortgages, losing their savings and retirement and in a lot of cases their own homes while renters lived it up on employment and Stimmis and child credits. Oh well. Now it’s your turn.

Unfortunately, Republicans have enough votes in the Senate to block any legislation that would be beneficial to 90% of Americans. Republicans would fight like hell against it. But if Democrats were smart they would introduce legislation to control the rent increases & the home prices. They could also try to stimulate the building of more housing (which would help control housing prices overall). Most Americans could relate to this and appreciate the effort. It would also distinguish Republicans from Democrats in terms of the policies that would benefit Americans. It wouldn't look very good for Republicans to fight against that kind of bread & butter issue. It would be a free infomercial for Democrats. Don't blame the landlords, blame the government. They are the ones who sent billions of dollars to help other countries, instead of helping us. They are the ones who are allowing all kinds of taxes, insurance rates, gasoline prices, housing prices, to skyrocketing prices, food, medicine, services in general.. They are the ones inciting for people not to work. Blame the government. Imagine a micro-landlord, who is renting one of her bedrooms to help her alleviate the mortgage fees, she doesn't even have one fully paid house to start with, and yet tenants are blaming landlords? Blame the government. Property taxes went up, construction material went up, hiring someone for repairs around the house are charging double of what they used to charge, home insurance prices went up, electricity went almost 200% up in my case. Not all landlords are the “1%” many are small mom and pops. Lastly being a landlord is tough having to be on 24/7 call to take care of issues and at times deal with very challenging tenants. Sorry, when I rented an apartment.. rent went up every single year. The owners have lost a lot of income by not being able to raise during covid.. So its perfectly fne that they raise now! This is a good thing.. the owner can get a lot more money for their rental property.

We are now a world economy. Good paying manufacturing jobs with great benefits are a thing of the past in the US. With the advancements of technology fewer people are needed to do the job. Unless you are a skilled laborer ie. plumber, electrician or educated in a profession that pays a good salary all that is left in this country are low paying service jobs. Which will not pay the rent or put food on the table for most families.

If they have been unemployed since the pandemic, then the tax payers have been paying their rent. Time to find work and move to an area you can afford.

Terrible. I can understand going to $1000 but $2000? Terrible.

This is not the landlords concern. It is a business relationship. Not a friendship. Pay the amount or get out.
