Hi -I have Oregon grape growing on my property and we have to excavate through a patch of it to put plumbing in as our water main broke. I have high liver enzymes so I want to benefit from the plant, but I was wondering if the vodka for the tincture would be bad for my liver. Is there another way to extract the berberine?
@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo7590
@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo7590 Жыл бұрын
You could make tea or powder from the scrapped bark, or a glycerite (sweet flavored but weaker). Consider checking out my toasted milk thistle video. This is often great for grumpy livers.

@@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo7590 thanks I’ll try that. It’s quite timely that you just answered me cause we just pulled it out a few hours ago and I already got some bark and made some yellow tea, with honey. I really want to try the glycerite and also the milk thistle. I’ll go check it out.

Sure! Dried herbs tend to lose potency much much faster than tinctures. If you plan on using it within a year (best within a couple months) then dried is fine! For making salves or oils, dried is probably preferred as any water can cause early spoilage in oil based products.

Thank you Dr. Curry! 🌿Would you mix the leaf in with the the Oregon Grape Root for a tincture? When you said it helps with uptake in the urinary tea, was wondering if that would also be the case with a tincture? Best, Chloe

That seems likely. I haven’t used the flowers for anything personally. The flowers are indeed edible and I have heard of using them to make a lemonade-like drink or sorbet. Medicinally I would tend to stick with the stronger root bark or stem bark and leaves.

What about the actual berries? What is nutrient content of them? The seeds? They are much like grape seeds, I know grape seeds have medicinal value. What about the berries? Also the flowers are delicious! Are flowers ever used?

@@Axecapoeiracomoxvalley The berries of are very sour but can be used to make jam, jelly and sauce. Oregon Grape is also used for cordial, as the cooked berries taste a bit like Blackcurrant. The flowers are edible and can be used to make a lemonade-like drink or sorbet. I haven’t heard of using the seeds. I’ve got bushels of these berries on the bushes by my creek right now, but personally I find them so tart and spiky that I will be leaving them for the birds!

Did you make the tincture immediately after peeling bark off roots? OR did you wait for it to dry a bit?
@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo7590
@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo7590 8 ай бұрын
I personally prefer to tincture from fresh herbs, not dried. I have heard herb industry reps say that they get just as good extraction from dried herb, and are indeed able to do multiple run batches to get even more concentration. I just have this feeling that something is lost in drying. I think of culinary herbs fresh vs dried. Take basil or parsley, both very different dried vs fresh. Something is lost, flavor is changed, diminished. Pesto made from dried basil is just not anywhere near as tasty as fresh basil pesto. In reality it probably depends on the specific herb. Rosemary, for instance, retains much of its intense character dried. One other thing about fresh herbs is that you know they’re fresh. You can buy dried products online, but with the unregulated industry, you may not know when that was dried, and dried herbs really lose effectiveness with time, especially if over a year old.

I’m skeptical about taking home made remedies.

I’m skeptical about taking pharmaceuticals. I’ve experienced too many bad side effects that my MD doctors told me to just ignore. Those bad medical reactions directly led to me “discovering” the existence of naturopathic medicine and gentle effective herbs. My home remedies rarely cause me any harm, when taken at reasonable doses. Stay away from the toxic drop dose herbs, and you’ll probably always have neutral or positive results. When you make something yourself with herbs from nature, there are no teams of salespeople trying to figure out how to get you hooked for life.
