Can you use lard? I used dried comfrey leaves where I took the stems out then cut up in small pieces. I put in crock pot on low for 4 hours but unfortunately I wasn’t sure if I measured properly with the lard and leaves. I ran out of time to finish so this has been sitting in my refrigerator for about a month. Can I still use this if I heat it up and continue or throw it out?
@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo759025 күн бұрын
@@ireneyo2699 sure, lard can be used. If it smells ok and isn’t growing anything, you may be able to salvage some salve. My only worry is that the crock pot wasn’t boiling on low for 4 hours, just long enough to come to temp then warm. I guess different crockpots have different settings. Boiling the oil that long could overcook some constituents and make it less effective.

Do you strain or take the tincture mixture straight?
@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo759026 күн бұрын
@@eperelman1 home made tinctures should be left to soak for at least a couple of weeks, better a couple of months, before use. Ideally gently shake them daily. I have heard of some people that take the whole gloopy mess and use it in smoothies, but most prefer to strain their tincture out before consuming. There is debate amongst herbalists on whether to always strain after a couple months, to stop longer term disintegrating or discoloration or bittering of the herbs, or to leave them soaking until use, however long that may be. An advantage of letting it sit is that potentially more of the plant dissolves into the liquid and that if absolutely needed due to circumstances or lack of availability, one could add more alcohol and make more, albeit weaker. I tend to let it sit. They definitely can discolor and have more bitter character, although neither is actually problematic to me. So yes, probably strain it before using. I have a video on several home “tincture pressing techniques” that you might consider. Check it out if you wish.

When I hear people say passion fruit isn’t very tasty I have to assume they either don’t know when it’s ripe or have something against tropical flavors. The best way to find a ripe fruit is by the smell but another indicator is when the skin starts to dimple as it ages. Our wild maypops here in Oklahoma have amazing flavor that changes as you eat it. It starts out as something reminiscent of mango and banana and ends on a citrusy note; absolutely bursting with flavor till the very end. I’ve heard of people eating the seeds but I just bite the pulp away and spit them out so maybe they affect the flavor?

Hello loving your videos they are very informative. I would like to know how to get the most out of the ginkgo biloba. I am doing a tincture right now, however upon reading more about it, the book that I currently have called medical herbalism is recommending that I do a standardized extract of 50:1 of dry plant material to a type of alcohol (I’m new to herbalism so i was a little confused on how to do that). I can’t find anything about a tincture, but does that work as well?
@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo7590Ай бұрын
@@CocoNaty a tincture is just using alcohol to infuse herbs, then straining out the bits, so that you can preserve the herbs and to make them easy to use and dose. The alcohol itself actually makes the medicine absorb a bit quicker/easier too. I personally prefer to use fresh herbs to make tinctures, as I hold the questionable belief that something is often lost in the drying process. Dried culinary herbs rarely have the same taste and potency of fresh culinary herbs, for example. This belief isn’t universal amongst herbalists, and I have heard lectures from industry herbalists that say they can get much more concentrated tinctures using powdered herbs that can be processed in a multi-pass pressure assisted manner that just wouldn’t work well with fresh chunks. I teach the traditional home wildcrafting method here on KZbin. It’s not really very precise or maximized, but it does make useful medicine very affordable if you can locate a tree nearby…

@@MarisaBlumenfeld a Vitamix works great! I have always wanted one. The way you chop isn’t absolutely important. @@eileenfraher7097 freezing fresh Ginkgo leaves can be a great way to keep their medicine strong for longer until using. Freezing the dried powder should prolong its effectiveness a while.
