Oh my god, I just figured it out. The lady at the end, how she said "this river makes a good resting place." She was trying to kill Mary all along! SHE must have tied multiple pounds of bacon to Mary in order to make her sink in two feet of water (and waste some of the bacon). And remember that 'accidental' gunshot? How could Ian have shot himself? Because he didn't. *SHE DID!* She wanted revenge for Ian's keeping Mary alive for so long, it only made sense that she cull the head of the problem! It all makes sense! That, or Mary is fucking stupid.

Hint: to avoid dying of accidental gunshot wounds, buy a rifle and a rifle-shotgun sheath at the beginning of the game, and always after you’re done hunting, make sure your rifle is not loaded (gun picture is broken open and waiting to reload) before you leave the hunting screen! One of the pioneers tells you that another party made the mistake of leaving a loaded rifle in the wagon, and after hitting a few bumps in the road it went off and killed a child. Stuff like this really happened on the Oregon Trail back in the day.

Speaking of this game, it got re-released in 2001 with new animated cutscenes and the fishing and foraging mechanics from the third edition as The Oregon Trail 5th Edition. This gave me some crazy nostalgia. About 20 years or so ago, when I was in elementary school, I always loved it when we went to the computer lab. Most of the time, the teacher just forced us to play crazy boring and repetitive educational games. It felt like torture at the time, but I still enjoyed it, because it was a good chance to slack off by pretending to play the game. Sometimes, usually just once or twice a school year, we get to play Oregan Trail 2, and boy was playing that game a blast back then. Nobody in the class played anything much like it and it was lots of fun. I always remembered the hunting being so much fun, and at the same time frustrating. This was because half the time after shooting it would miss the animal when you were clearly on target. I remember we all used to give the characters the names of our friends and classmates playing next to us. Then when something randomly bad happened, we'd be all like "Hey! look at what happened to you!", and laughed. The teacher didn't seem very happy when she saw that I named one after her xD. This game had everyone hooked and laughing. Good times....I don't recall anybody making it to the end though. I guess it was because we never had much time to play, not to mention everyone was more preoccupied with killing off the characters.

I remember I used to play this all the time in computer class as a kid. Then my computer teacher bitched at us because most of the class including myself would just buy as much ammo as possible and spend all of class hunting. The computer teacher told us we weren't playing the game right and would get detention if we hunted too much lol imagine explaining that to your parents.
