Great video! Love the honesty. I feel similar in the water. I'm years into practicing, (5 months consistently), but struggle to breath comfortably. A 100m swim would be an all out-effort! I am working with a wonderful coach and fully trust the process, but damn is it discouraging to finish yet another swim feeling defeated. The fact that you are a top-level athlete and have similar struggles is a reminder that I'm not alone. Your journey adds fuel to my desire to swim like a dolphin. Sick video, Talbot!

Awe watch out. This man PRd in the 5k this summer. As a collegiate runner he never thought he’d do that again. But he did. Then surfed that confidence through the Canadian hour record. Now he’s run 30 seconds faster in a 5k time trial off the bike than he has in a race. This man is building serious confidence. Gotta have that on race day

Poor old Lionel. He gives himself such a hard time about his swimming. Would be nice to see him give himself some credit for working on his weaknesses. These obsessive personalties we have as triathletes are such a double edged sword, and I find it so hard to get the balance. Mine led me to injury and heartache, but then also brought me back from the brink (to an extent) and I'm never really sure what side of the fine line I'm on. That's why I like these videos. The best thing about them is being given a window into Lionel's psychological struggles/ journey.

What a pump from the video they bike leg and run with the tunes make me want to train harder.. unreal stuff keep the videos coming
@ZenEndurance4 жыл бұрын
Lionel, there is a breaking point where swimming harder is actually slower. The form becomes kind of thrashy and smoother is actually faster if you’re doing any kind of distance. There is a pace that’s fastest for you considering your form. If you want to be faster than that and you’re already fit, keep working on volume which helps smoothing out your form. You got this!!!
@franciscomoreno79984 жыл бұрын
great advice. Lionel, I hope you read this, is not new to you I am sure, you have heard this before, you know what I am going to write in your brain, now you need to make it functional at an emotional level so your ego doesn't take the best out of you. Swim speed = propulsion gains - drag losses. Most of the time we crap on the losses trying to increase propulsion. I think that is why go you slower on race day, you are trying to keep up with others based on effort not smoothness. Work on your form over distance, be Zen son You still have pro years left to close that mental gap. With Love and respect from an old fart fan
@jaimie0724 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Look at his swim speed for that 1000 yards. That equates to 1.26min/100m in a 50m pool. Don't forget he was swimming in a 25 yard pool. Lucy Charles would be swimming around 1.03 pace. It is clear that volume is not going to fix his issues.
@jaimie0723 жыл бұрын
He’s tried volume. He’s swimming lots of mileage and managed 1.25min/100m pace for a 1000 yard TT. That’s what a typical 11 year old swimmer would average, swimming 3 times a week. Clearly there is a technique issue. You don’t need to be a Rhodes scholar to figure that one out
@aholmes464 жыл бұрын
I would LOVE to see Lionel do the same thing for his swim as what he did for his 5k run pb last year. I know that his swim times are not as impressive as his run and bike, but I'd love to see how much he could improve with a concentrated effort on his swim.

As a fan of LS and of triathlon, I’d argue that being a “bad” swimmer is part of the Sanders mystique. I know he’d love to win Kona by a mile, but when he does finally win it’s going to be epic to see him fight from the back of the race and overtake Jan. That will be a race.

I like to see you work on your swim! More time in the water is going to help. That mindset shift will help too. Learning to swim and swim FAST as an adult is really tough. My fist job at 15 was teach swim lessons to kids and adults. Teaching adults was way way way way harder.
