Without question, the potential for the further evolution of Pipe Organs is in a golden age given the advent of computerisation and incorporating acoustic pipes. Whether or not institutions justify such expense and maintenance of these beautiful instruments however remains to be seen. Virtual Pipe Organs also have a place in making such sound and instruments within reach of musicians who may not have connections to church organs, grand pipe organs, etc. It can only be a good thing if it is increasing the popularity of such historically wonderful instruments.

Really fascinating, Fraser: I enjoyed every single second of this video. What an amazing team of organ builders and Stephan is clearly a very fine craftsman - it will be wonderful to see what he does with the extension work to the Rieger Organ at Marienstatt Abbey. And your 'black finished' organ console and pedalboard! You must be thrilled. Not long now until it will all be assembled and your debut recital will be being aired. What a journey! My very best wishes to you and even more success in all that you do! B R A V O !

That "hybrid" console is really cool! I think it's a great idea that would save space for churches who want a piano, as well, but don't have room for one. People say a piano is like an elegant woman in a black dress. Well, your console is just as elegant. Can't wait to see what she sounds like!

That hybrid console is quite interesting. The larger manual reminds me of some of the organs that the American organ builder, Midmer Losh, had incorporated into some of their organs. One such organ is the seven manual organ of Boardwalk Hall which has two of them for the Great and Choir. Though these manuals are only 85 keys and range from C to C, but permitted the use of extended pedal stops. These stop comprise of the Grand Great and Grand Choir. However, the organ is equipped with a piano so it may permit the piano to play from one of the two extended manuals. The organ also has an extended swell manual of 76 keys, but the extra keys are more for aesthetics and can be electrically coupled to probably the Grand Great and Grand Choir divisions. Seeing that the hybrid console with the 88 key manual is great for pianists and nice that you can couple organ sounds to it.

Thanks for this rare insight into organ building. The voicing of pipes is something we rarely see. It rather staggers the imagination to consider how much voicing effort goes into a large instrument. And what goes unheralded is the artistic ear that can give the same character to an entire rank, and for all the ranks to be able to play in a pleasant ensemble, with no single pipes standing out of character. As to not touching pipes, I'm yet to see an organ technician who doesn't. Just as long as one avoids blowing by mouth into a *reed* pipe. Now, that's verboten!

I found you channel the other day. I am very happy that I found it. But it also makes me very angry. Why happy - I get to see you showcase many of the Great organs of Germany. Why angry - well you see when I was in high school ( 1991 ) I went on exchange program in Hildesheim, Germany and for my project that I had to complete in order to get credit I decided that I would do it about organs. During the month I was there I tried to find any and every single organ I could. I arranged tours of these organs. The musical director of the school is very helpful and I got to see a couple of the organs that he played in his churches. I may even be remembered there because I pissed off the the very conservative Priest when I played some Scott Joplin. The music teacher was amused and did not mind taking the heat. I think he was envious because I could get away with it. I took pictures of the inside of organs. outside of organs, consoles of organs snapping over 1200 or so slides that I would use in my project. When back in the US I took them to the local pharmacy who sent the rolls out to be proceed. A week passed. No slides. Two weeks passed. No slides. We are now in week 1560 and I am starting to believe they may have been lost. Of course they were. That remains one of the greatest heartbreaks of my life. So that’s why angry. Thank you for doing this. But perhaps this is karmas way of rewarding me got my loss.

Absolutely awesome. I am so please that Stephan seems to be as excited about the black / white colour scheme as your wife! It will be really cool to see the work they will be doing at the Marienstatt Abbey Rieger Organ. You must be pleased, the mounting of the expression pedals look perfect and the toe pistons.. well, super! Can't wait to hear it 'played in anger'. I have seen a video of pipe voicing at Nicholson & Co on KZbin. It looks like witchcraft! How they manipulate the upper lip, lower lip, put nicks in the languid and cutting pieces away all look very complicated, especially as all the modifications are interactive. I now have to try and translate the Orgelblau Oppel website. One question I have always wanted to ask an organ builder is why with modern materials available like GRP and Carbon Fibre, why wind chests and ducting is still made from wood, which degrades and is affected by temperature and humidity than modern materials, and is much heavier. They want to go for the technology like midi and sound synthesis and electronic memories for registrations etc, but the basic building materials for pipe organs have not changed in centuries!
@jimharris93943 жыл бұрын
Totally not an expert but I suspect that carbon fiber composites would do just as well in a Stradivarius violin - NOT! Natural wood gives character to the sound, and different woods have different musical characteristics. Perhaps it's like the difference between a carefully crafted natural vanilla ice cream and ice cream made with artificial vanilla flavoring. For me, it's like night and day, though others might not notice the difference.

I had to navigate back to the global list of his postings and *manually* select some English videos before KZbin would relent and allow me to see English versions again. Why? Dunno.
