Sander Booij, organ builder and organist, and Jon Liinason, working with communication, new audiences and innovation at the Göteborg International Organ Academy, went organ hunting in the Netherlands in February 2020.
In this sixth episode they go to Leiden to discover the De Swart 1565 /
Van Hagerbeer 1643 organ in the Hooglandse Kerk.

Leiden was my favorite Dutch city when I visited a few years ago, attended an organ concert of Erwin Wiersinga at the Pieterskerk and was very, very impressed by that organ. I hope to visit this one soon - you can never get enough of those lovely doubled Dutch principals!

It is a pleasure to watch and listen. Indeed an instrument that can be addictive, similar to its big sister in the Pieterskerk. By the way, no surprise that you can also find "French" stops on this organ: the Brabant (and also Walloon) Renaissance organ like this was one of the fathers of the classic French organ (and also the North German one!). In general, I find this period of development of the modern organ from around 1500, which took place here, very exciting. I think of names like Van Covelens, Niehoff, de Zwart for example.

just found this series, i must say. should have visited Sneek, Martinikerk. it has a arp/van dam organ (only a select few arp stops left but still)
