Some days ago I've had the wonderful opportunity to play both organs at the Bovenkerk in Kampen, Netherlands! The organ you are seeing and hearing in this video is the main organ built by Hinsz and many other organ builders over the centuries. This organ features incredible Principals, Flutes and reeds and also has the beautiful Tremulant you would expect from a dutch instrument!

Thanks Paul, you are a natural on screen - a personable, relaxed and intelligent presentation. You took to that historic organ like a duck to water. I like to think that great organs have seen many come and play them through the centuries and rejoice when a soul-mate comes to the console because thats when they sing.

I've visited this lovely organ several times over 40 years. It has a unique "silvery" sound, which comes through here very nicely. The Bovenkerk congregation are justly proud of their instrument, and I hope it lasts for centuries more!

I see Paul in all these impressive churches and cathedrals. I dare say they consider it a privilege for anyone to play their organ. But, for those of us who experience and enjoy Paul's talents we know it's two-way. They are privileged too to have such a talented organist play their organ.

From beginning to end, a wonderful journey through all timbres, epochs and construction phases with this extraordinary instrument from the Netherlands . But also an exceptionally knowledgeable organist and musician who brings us closer to this instrument in a warm symphatic way. I enjoyed every minute.👌

Volkmar Busse Oh, 3 hours only, wow! Did you see this in Kampen? ---- Infortunatly no! (I am in France) and I did not know the Paul program in Netherlands. In fact, I just read the Paul respons at Dirk Smits one day ago in the Hinzs organ file: "I only had about 3 hours for both organs there, so I had to get used to it pretty quickly" . In this case, it's absolutely amazing Paul's ability to appropriate an new organ and take advantage of colors and registration.... Guy

Dear Paul, you truly are one of the greatest young organists of your generation! Congrats on the wonderful mix between improvisations (a bit of Propitius at the end there?) and an organ demonstration. Could you please make a video of how you improvise in your style? I would love to be able to improvise like you do, specifically the fantasia's like the one from Rotterdam on the "Old Hundereth". I am a young organist in the Netherlands (15 years old) and think my congragations would love improvised service music in your style. Kind regards, Tim

The Hinsz organ is magnificent! Thank you for your most informative and engaging tutorial. I love the reeds on that instrument. I love reeds on the organ because they add such vibrancy to any registration. Your energy in sharing these magnificent instruments and the energy that is behind every piece that you play speaks to me. That is the work of the Spirit of God within you. Many brilliant organists play technically masterful, but without the energy from God it is only performance. You’re a great example to my students and myself of what a tremendous ministry of music that we can all embrace. Music should reflect the character of God and everything that I hear you play does that! Bless you, my friend.

You are going to have the time of your life Paul !!! You will be playing the greatest organ of The Netherlands! It can not get much better then this !!!!. I remember as a 14 year old ( 47 years ago) being in that church with over a 1000 people singing with Willem Hendrik Zwart at the organ - at the Theologische Hogeschool dag.- it gave me the goosebumps just being part of such a massive performance singing together psalm 68 or 150 with people from all over the country. Something like that is hard to replicate in these days...were you there ? Let me know !!!!! So many great players have been at this organ giving concerts- the list is endless...

Thank you Paul. This organ is one of my favourite Dutch instruments, from the time of Wim Zwart to Ab Weegenaar. I know it was based on the great Zwolle organ through the Schnitger family, but I've never heard its component sounds so clearly explained and demonstrated. Ask your agent to book an NZ tour for you; Auckland Town Hall, Klais organ; Auckland Cathedral, Nicholson organ, new; St Matthews Auckland, "Father" Henry Willis organ and many other excellent organs.

Thank you for demonstrating the organ. It is one of my favorite instruments in the Netherlands. I have a recording of the late Klaas Bolt playing it (former church organist of the Muller organ at Haarlem). Frans Caspar Schnitger worked on it I believe. The console is a little similar to Zwolle (St. Michael's). I think Frans Caspar probably rebuilt the console however I am not sure. Correct me if I'm wrong. I speak of these details because I am really into organ histography. W.

Very nice of you that you left some flutes out by the tuti of the organ. Some organplayers wont do that and then it makes the organ scream like a old woman. Some People in Holland loves that strange enough and even some famous dutch organplayers will do such things. You made the tuti sound very nice. Next The Schitger in Groningen maybe??

Thanks for your demonstration of this wonderful Hinsz organ. Interesting from the Hinsz organs is , is the difference in style between his oldest and youngest organs. You can hear the difference in sound between the Baroque Schnitger inspired organs and the period after the baroque. Have you ever visited the Hinsz organ in Leens? It is recently restored. Octaaf 8' of the pedal division? (When you got to the pedal, you appeared to be both time-constrained, and a bit tired from all the stretch-and-pulls the stop actions require.) You're right that this organ's pedal division is rather thin. With keyboard divisions this large, at least one 32' stop and a good mixture would be hoped for on the pedal. Of course, equally puzzling or odd, is finding out that, after Hinsz worked on rebuilding the organ in 1741-3, the independent pedal stops weren't added until 1788-1790 by H.H. Freytag and F.C. Schnitger, Jr.

There is a pressing argument to use a 16 foot stop in the plenum in some baroque organs. Namely, when these have a 6 foot rank in their mixture. If that is the case, one has to include a 16 foot, otherwise the plenum will sound ugly. This one can experience for example at the famous Muller organ in Haarlem and the Vater-Muller organ in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam and several other ones in the Netherlands. On large French baroque organs one may even encounter a 12 foot rank in a mixture! It goos without saying that inclusion of a 16 foot then is absolutely mandatory!

i visited a Jürgen ahrend organ a whole while back and the organist told me that Jürgen himself told him that when the silver gets engaged (so a mixture) you also need to add a 16' stop on that manual if it is there a well voiced organ will sound very complete and round without even needing pedal sometimes
This will change your organist-life..
