I am very pleased to bring you an Organ Recital on the very colourful and diverse Henry Willis / Harrison & Harrison organ of Cirencester Parish Church.
This 4-manual organ has 63 speaking stops and is located in one of the largest parish churches in the UK which happily means it has a wonderful acoustic.
I do believe that this is one of the most versatile and successful church organs in the UK. Which church organs do you think are the best?
00:00 Bach Toccata and Fugue in F BWV 540
16:55 Bridge - Adagio in E major
24:17 Cocker Tuba Tune
29:38 Guilmant - Pastorale (Organ Sonata No. 1)
36:40 Guilmant - Final (Organ Sonata No. 1)
Just wait until you hear this Tuba!!

Cirencenster parish Church is known by some as the cathedral of the Cotswolds. The Willis /Harrison 4 manual rebuild organ is indeed magnificent. As so beautifully played by Richard.

That is a massive rebuild by H&H. It was a 3 manual organ that couldn’t get its sound past the screen previously and had to make do with a 16’ ophecleide as its only pedal reed. Also the console was under the painted pipes, and, I’m sure there was a separate choir division above where you are sitting. Sounds so much better now. Thank you and wonderful 540!

Richard, what a splendid organ recital you gave from Cirencester on Saturday. I loved the Bach especially but it is wrong of me to single out a programme item from the whole wonderful evening. Superb playing on a beautiful instrument. So very well played. Thank you indeed. Not to forget the VC Sunday Again thank you Dennis Talbot

Is the Willis / H&H organ of Cirencester really maybe "the best in the UK"? I'm just not sure. I know this guy named Richard McVeigh, and we're building a brand new organ that will indeed have a rather wide range... ;-) See you all at BiS-VC-NC soon.

You would make Peter Hurford playing BWV 540. Heck you’d make Bach himself proud the way you played one of his many works. God has certainly given you a LOT of talent.

I recently unearthed a long forgotten cassette tape recording of my playing the Bridge Adagio on the Gloucester Cathedral organ for my GCSE Music performance (1992, pre the Briggs Frenchification and no 32'!). A great piece of music, and I enjoyed hearing you play it on Cirencester. I learnt to play on the organ in Minchinhampton, just down the road from Cirencester. That is well worth a visit to play next time you are in that area, although these days it is sorely in need of major restoration work.

Is the Minch organ a 3 manual where the pedal board stops at top F with a big piece of wood where the G would be? Very useful playing the Widor Toccata for my GCSE music as didn't need to look for the F at all
@christophersparkhall
@christophersparkhall 3 жыл бұрын
@@drmarcushead9036 yes, it is one note short! I always found the Widor quite the workout at Minchinhampton. The tracker action was heavy, and coupling even just the Swell was pushing the limit of what the muscles could do!

You'd be most welcome to visit All Saints', Cheltenham, if you wish, Richard. We are fortunate to have a fine Hill of 1887. It isn't quite as nice as Cirencester but I'm sure you'd enjoy it nonetheless!

Lovely choice - BWV-540. I describe it as a trip up a mountain with a number of rest breaks on the way up, and then back down again. The toccata going through the cycle cycle of 5ths to get just about as far from the home key as possible and then resolving within the last 2 bars. This Toccata is at its best when played with a definite 3/4 cum 9/8 pulse and not as much staccato as is commonly applied to Bach's work. The double fugue is a real masterpiece of separately introducing and developing two themes, then and weaving the two themes together and developing the two together. I don't believe there is a better more musical, more exciting, more dramatic example of a toccata and double fugue than BWV-540.
