The thing that got me into salts, and kept me away from organics for so long was there is no baseline. Nobody ever said "this is all you need to grow organically." Its always "oh this is good for cell structure, and this is good for veg and you'll need this and this and the more varied the sources the better the quality" and all the sudden you need 100 imputs. Its not that complicated get a 3-3-3, worm castings and a bloom. You can do more but thats all you really need.

@@hopefullyhigh All you need is a good start with living soil and basic knowledge of how to read the plants. In this approach you have millions of tiny soil scientists that work 24/7 for you and they are smarter than the humans that study them. In the end it comes down to preference, and which is better is relative.

Great talk - as always! Just one side-note on a point that was mentioned: regarding the "only 16 amps" in Amsterdam, keep in mind this is at 230V. So in terms of power this would be equivalent to 30 amps in the US. Also, most houses in western Europe have three phases coming in. So in reality it is 3x16A of 230V each. In a single room however, you usually have just one phase of 16A. So this might be kind of limiting if you don't want to pull cables from a different room / phase. Anyway, even with this limitation you still get 16A x 230V = 3.680 Watts.
@DanJonesShow
@DanJonesShow 10 ай бұрын
Exactly! And that's "real" 230VAC, not like the North American/US dual 115VAC neutral to neutral. A LOT of folks in growing do not understand amps/watts and Ohms Law in general when talking about their lights.

29:56 I can relate to that. I had a 30x30 flower flood and drain system downstairs of a relatives house. Put house in reservoir went up stairs because it usually took 2 hours to fill once cleaned after harvest. Fell asleep and when I ran downstairs to turn it off, I had 5 inches of water under my feet and a waterfall going outside. Once I jumped into the water I crapped myself and jumped back on steps because I thought I might get electrocuted 😂. Ruined all timber and gyprock and took me a month to dry it out. Mold was my biggest concern. Now I just do 10x10 Dutch pot system with a 600 litre reservoir and I couldn’t count the times I’ve been topping reservoir up and forgot about it. I blame the weed for a bad memory 😂

I have more time to sit and stare at my plants since I use Blumats to do most of the watering. The time I save I go over my feeding, top dressing, enzyme and worm tea details. I kept analyzing the amount of light I was giving and the temps. No need to fuss about water so much. I originally got them so I could leave for days at a time.

Great podcast, Great to hear from the legend Adam Dunn, I'm very surprised of his opinion on hydroponics grown especially with Athena, I believe he used the phrase cardboard terps, well I can say with confidence I've grown the same strains in soil with organic inputs as I've grown with deep water culture and I was skeptical at first but Athena nutrients with deep water culture produces serious terpenes, very comparable if not more than grown in soil. I'm no expert but I would love to hear other people's experiences, Great podcast brother.

After years of growing, all you gotta do is set up 5 gallon buckets with clay pellet baskets, fish bubbler(optional). Light, 600w hps (or equivalent) on timer, oscillating fan ...all inside a ventilated tent. When buckets get low, mix a new one and carefully lift the basket with roots and slide into a fresh full bucket of solution. You barely have to be home. Even at full flower I could leave town for days. Spend only a few hours TOTAL to proveide enough for me and all my buddies. Don't harvest early, if the buds are still getting bigger, let it go Get a good strain...most important. In my experience, a great strain will produce vey similar smoke notwithstanding different methods.

@the_gold_canopy
@the_gold_canopy 8 ай бұрын
I think the whole soil vs. wet system argument is actually just a preference as a grower. As a smale scale caregiver, I use chilled aeroponics for early stages of growth then switch to a calcium based nutrient line with soil, and doing this on such a small level with so many pots on a tightly scheduled perpetual rotation, I need to be able to get high yields with undersized pots running high potency top shelf genetics along with low trim-to-flower ratios. Overhead operating costs vs. size, scale, and budget pretty much will dictate what a cultivator chooses as far as methods and gear/equipment, of course chilled wer systems will always surpass organic when it comes to speed and yeild, but the initial costs as well as costs to properly maintain is insane, especially adding regulated Co2, air filtration and climate control (heating/cooling and humid-dehumidification), supplemental UV lighting, and of course all the other overhead that comes with wet systems. A big factor that also currently plays a part in that decision is what the consumer is looking for, and currently everyone wants top shelf organic craft hand-trimmed, properly glass jar cured cannabis at the lowest price.

Hydro ebb and flow in growrocks is my system of choice been using it for 23 years and it worked for me better than other hydro systems that i tried like dwc or coco. I developed my own system that does great and is automated and everything is light weight and easy to grow and recycle. The medium is reusable and holds salvage value. Roots thrive in that system and plants just love it. It is also very easy to adjust and manipulate like the flooding frequency changing the feeding flushing or controled stress. Organics is not an option for me since i absolutely need light weight reusable pots and automation.

I thought this was a very enjoyable episode. I wish that Adam would have expanded on his claims about PGRs in hydroponic nutrients. Do nutrient manufacturers need to disclose on the label when PGRs are present in a formula? Is he claiming that popular nutrient brands geared toward cannabis all contain PGRs? How prevalent is the use of PGRs in commercial production? Many PGRs are classified as pesticides and are therefore not allowed in cannabis production in many states. Rooting hormone is a PGR, and that is used by anyone who takes clones. But there are PGRs that are absolutely harmful when smoked. What compounds is he specifically talking about when he is mentioning PGRs, and why would a nutrient company want to use them? Is he claiming growers are knowingly applying the PGRs themselves or are they ignorant to what they are using?

I've done both and coco and grown in soil with nutes also. Organics is awesome but so is hydro. They both have a place depending on what your trying to achieve. If your trying to grow massive plants grow hydro. If you want great buds grow organic. Just not crazy of growth as hydro. I like to grow with both. I like coco too. 😂 If you want middle on between growth go with Coco. Be careful with hydro. Avoid root rot. You need a water chiller or bennies or keep it sterile or your plants will get root rot quick. Easiest fix is hydro guard to avoid it. There a cheaper version of hydroguard some ag southern shit but I forgot what it is called off the top of my head

Next horrible. Then good again........ argh. I been doing this a while and never have i seen this. Makes me wsnt to go back to organic.

I somehow got the MK ultra in North Carolina from Adam. One of the strains that change the game for me. I also love to watch him and Miles chat it up CrawDaddy.

coco can do it all and can be more forgiving to the new grower who may overwater.. i also believe density is genetics and enviornment. while yield is way better and faster indoor for hydroponics imo

This is one of my favourite episodes. I cant believe mr Growit hasn't tried Dragon fly Earth Medicine. I first tried Dragonfly Earth medicine in 2018 and I love it , I recommend it to everyone. Fat flowers and brilliant black are my favourites . Be careful though, use sparingly and start with 50% of recommend amounts. My first batch messed up bad .The microbes went crazy and the pH started fluctuating. Not only that the ec was off the charts . You can add it to your soil as a amendment and it works great as a top dressing . The list of ingredients in fat flowers and brilliant black will definitely impress. It comes loaded with microbes .

Being around grows for 10+ yrs, ive seen too many times that soil equals bugs! Hydro has the possibility but it’s extremely low. RDWC for the win! Its not that hard.

As a rabbid consumer, and as a indusrty professional, It is a huge prefrence of mine that what I smoke is grown in soil. The terpene profile is much better and the smoke is smoother. I can always tell when a strain was grown using hydro. It messes with the smell and flavor.

@neal cassady or a novice hydro gardener I bet its more difficult to achieve the same flavour with hydro unless you know what the plant need whereas organic makes feeding much easier as they only take up what they need provided you don't go way over the top with nutrients

@neal cassady Don't be too harsh, but yeah @Chris that's a common misconception and kinda invalid. Hydro can mos def compete with indoor soil/organic, esp when really dialled in, as other dude mentioned - it's when you stack hydro up against outdoor (anything), that's when there's a noticeable difference. *BUT, in saying that* ~ I'm sure if you're actively in the business, you should know that although certain hydro systems can't be run outdoor, aquaponics def can, and some aquaponic grows are by definition "organic" anyway That's why despite your contradiction (hydro vs soil/organic), anything properly grown outdoor will win 99.9% of the time anyway, whether it's organic, synthetic, aquaponics, coco etc... because the Sun is king.
