Ticks can threaten animals and people, but there is a simple organic treatment to help with your stock animals. Oil of turpentine, a natural tree oil, is available at old pharmacies or hardware stores as pure gum turpentine, and it can be injected under the skin of the animal to repel ticks. The turpentine gives off a smell that masks the animals from attracting ticks. The animals should be injected under the loose skin of the neck, between the skin and the flesh. Injections into the flesh won’t kill the animal, but they will get a small abscess in that spot, which will have to be treated. This wonderful old-school system is organic, and while it may sting a little, it is for the greater good of the animal. So, find some turpentine oil and protect your animals today.

Geoff, as a veterinarian I have a couple of thoughts. When giving a subcutaneous injection, when you tent the skin you can find a triangle at the end on the tent if you push in with your finger. Then inject in the triangle parallel to your tent. Second, it is recommended to aspirate or pull back just a bit on the syringe to confirm you haven't hit a blood vessel .It is awkward at first, but you get the hang of it. Perhaps practice before you have the needle in your animal. It is rare to hit a blood vessel, but that would be catastrophic with the oil. Hope this helps.

As a vet what are your thoughts on ticks spreading through contact. Do they all get “confused” by smells. Seems like once they are in they’re they would just bite an area without oil.

Very interesting! I live in southern europe and here ticks are a serious problem, if you hike you really have to be careful of ticks, cause they're very common and they spread Lyme's disease and other bad illnesses. I learned a great tip to get rid of ticks, after the bite: take any pointy tool, tweezers, or a screwdriver, anything pointy; delicately turn the tick counterclockwise. Be patient and keep it turning and turning. Don't try to pull it out, in a few minutes the tick will be fed up, and it will leave to find a quieter place to attach. As soon as it detaches, take it and throw it away, or burn it. I tested this and it worked. Don't use any chemical pruduct or oil on a tick when it's still attached, that could make the tick vomit and increase the chances the tick gives you or your animal desease. If this doesn't work, grab the tick with tweezers as closer to the skin as possible and turn counterclockwise and away from the skin. The turning method has never failed me to this day though.

In Australa. The paralysis tick inject a compound that stops you from feeling the bite or feeding. This same compound can interupt nerve signals that cause the animal (or person) to eventully stop breathing. They class it s a neurotoxin. It's not the feeding that is the issue, it is the compound that they inject to start feeding that is the problem. A single bite can (if not treated quickly enough) kill small to medium dogs, or cause major issues in larger dogs & humans. We have other ticks here, but this one is never taken lightly, they are a serious issue.

Great info Geoff :-) WOW!!! I can't get over how Latifah has grown!!! I've been offline for 6 years. Lost the old account due to no use (computer blew up) and have re-subbed. You all look great :-) Looking forward to having some catch-up binge sessions on your vids from the last few years! Great to be back online in spite of frustrating very poor reception (thanks Telstra :-/) Was thinking of you during the bushfires last year with what you'd said when doing my PDC. Have no clue if used with injection, but a few times every year I mix up 2-3 ml turpentine with prox 20-30 ml olive oil and rub it in . Just separate the hair and let it acces the skin. Same mix is used against mites, just rub it in on the ears. Have not had problem with fleas, mites or ticks since I started this treatment 6-7 y ago. Works on both dogs and cats. 1-2 mg turpentine in a capsule will also deworm your animal as a bonus.

use 1 drop of pure lavender oil. Spread it over 6 spots on the skin where the blood vessels run close to the skin surface. pay attention to really pure oil. otherwise you will be nauseous. Daily from late Feb to early November. Do this daily if you are very sensitive and quickly attacked by ticks or if you do a lot of forest work. Do you visit forests less often or are you less susceptible to ticks than 2 or 3 times a week. This works well for most people. preventive but you never get a 100% guarantee. Good luck herma

@@turnitupmike I've known that turpentine is really good at killing lice and fleas if applied very carefully. I think some lice products use turpentine as one of the ingredients, and I think a lot depends on the refining process. And I think Pinesol (the cleaning product) is just diluted turpentine with other chemicals not fit for anything else but cleaning while diluted in wataer. :)
