I’m of an age lol I had the original GTI 1976 brand new it was a revelation to drive if I remember it had 108BHP. But it weighed only 810KG and the handling was epic go kart like and most importantly put a huge smile on my face when driving. My Son has a new Golf R and yes it’s faster better brakes more power modern Tech 4 wheel drive BUT back to back driving the Mk1 handles way better no where near as fast but puts a bigger smile on my face. Having said that the Golf’s still a helluva car tho love this colour but where are the Tartan Cloth seats that is a must in a GTI 👍

Purchased the wrong model. i have had 2 Golf Rs. now got a GTI TCR same fun as the old one. we have had them for over 30 years. your right the R tuned was very fast. the TCR is a lot more playful. and has the dash without the silly slide controls,

So let me get this right. The only return to physical buttons are all on the steering wheel? The infotainment, though much larger, along with climate controls, media browsing, etc, are all touch screen?

Man those steering wheel buttons the same shitty plastic that only comes in a full assembly so if one button breaks you pay 800$. Only used the steering wheel volume up button in my gti for like a week and it got stuck

I have a white mk7 manual 220 cv and I think is beautiful. But this mk8 don't dislike. Maybe interiors are not as good as 7 with tartan, but seems a very good Gti too

Yeah. People with brains have noticed that EVs are actually catastrophic to the environment. But the leftist idiots with blind eyes will always push the narrative. Even Volvo who makes lots of EVs have published the data that the carbon footprint of a new C40 recharge is 70% more than a petrol XC40. 70%! And it will only be offset after 70000miles of use. Good gracious. Not to mention toxic mining and deforestation to make the heavy batteries. Human beings truly are a strange species.

For the people commenting about the Alfa Romeo-like wheels: This is supposed to be an ode to the Mk5/Mk6 wheels. But... Alfa used the rounded 5 spoke designs earlier on their cars tho. Thats a fact you can't get around. To all the VW fanboys: Quit it. The MK5/MK6 GTI wheels are more smooth compared to the wheels from Alfas. The modern catch on the MK5/MK6 wheels does make it look more like an Alfa wheel because it has the added depth to it. The roundness of the design doesn't suit the design language of the MK8 (GTI).

Em termos de design, o para-choque fronteiro virou uma grade que parece ser de plástico preto, as rodas ficaram estranhas quando você olha o carro de lateral em relação aos modelos anteriores, e no geral lembra os hatchs como o astra. Na minha humilde opinião, o design deste carro não está acima do GTI de 2016

Aber zum ersten Mal sehe ich einen klaren Fehler. Die Abdeckung unter dem Lenkrad ist nicht richtig festgezogen. Die Schrauben sind nicht so festgezogen, wie sie sollten. Die Abdeckung, in der sich der Lichtschalter befindet und die Höhe des Lenkrads nach oben und unten steuert Daune hat ein klares Loch.🤔
