Hi Denise. You have a lovely home and it certainly seems to be organized beautifully. You appear to be around the same age as I am so I thought I would pass this along. I have recently found a book which I loved. It came out a few years ago and the title sounds a bit strange but the book includes some sage advice for people to start to think about around our age group. The title is "The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning". Honestly, it's not as horrible as one might think, it just got me thinking about what in my home is relevant to my life at this stage of my life and what I can pass on to my kids and others who some of my items may better serve at their stages of life. I cleared out a whole lot more with that attitude from holiday items to extra sets of dishes to tools. It lessens what I have to manage and store, gave my kids some of the things the loved or could use now, and allowed others to give a new life to items I just had in a cupboard somewhere and no longer really used. Of course, I held on to whatever I want and use. I didn't empty my house or my life I just lightened my load and the load of those left behind to deal with my stuff when I am no longer around to do so. It is just food for thought and a delightful book with personal stories and anecdotes. It made me both laugh and cry and got me thinking about my loved ones and the last memories they will eventually have about me and my stuff. I don't plan on going anywhere for hopefully decades but nothing wrong with making my life more streamline and manageable and giving a new life to some cherished family items and utilitarian things I no longer use. I sincerely hope you are not offended by this comment, I just think at our age and stage of life it is time to think about our things a little differently. Cheers from Canada.

Ro, I neglected to say that he passed the closet to get to the living room to drop his coat on the chair if he comes in from the garage. Yep...its something men do. But what I've decided is it's not worth fighting over. I can hang the coat up and save "battles" for more meaningful situations.

I think 'utility drawer' is a perfect name. It doesn't contain junk. My suggestion is to put up a coat hook near the front door for your husband to hang his coat (You could still move his coat to the closet when convenient) .At least it would keep the coat off of your chair. @@homemakingwithdenise I think I'm going to jump on "the bin wagon"! 😂 We just downsized to a smaller home with an open concept (my kitchen is WIDE open to the sitting room and dining area) and that also means reduced storage. Love the dress! It is very flattering on you. If your husband doesn't really care about folded underwear, just put them in a basket in the drawer. It will save you a lot of time on laundry day. If he only wears the flannel pants occasionally, have a couple that he likes in the drawer that way there will be plenty of room for his t-shirts. Chair that collects coats----hmmm. Can't help you there. LOL You did a great job showing your well organized home. Thanks for sharing
@homemakingwithdenise3 жыл бұрын
Katherine, I'm liking the idea about the underwear in a basket. That might be a solution. The rolled up pajama pants at the back of the drawer seem to be working. They're not up front so he's got to reach for them and it uses space that otherwise would be unused. And more tee shirts are coming. I just got the laundry done and have more to put in there so we will see. I like your suggestions!

Hi Leona, I'm always glad to see you. I had so much fun "being" Donna Reed. People seem to like it. It's a fun way to add some interest in and give some tips. Now for the hats...I got those boxes at JoAnn's. They always have something similar but if you decide you need them, buy three or four and take back what you don't need. I bought two and when I went back, there weren't any in the same pattern so the third one is just a little different. It still works but next time, I'd rather have one to take back then not find one. Which tip or tips spoke to you?

My husband is the same about dropping his coats and hats on the sofa or chair. I don't really have a entry way. The closet is right behind our front door. I can't put the blame on my husband. I too sometimes drop my coat on the furniture 😀

I will usually put mine in the closet but sometimes....I'll drop it on the chair. The good thing is I get them in the morning!

@@homemakingwithdenise I also like your idea for your husband's hats right now his hat storage is on the cap holder strap that attaches to a door and they fall off

@@lorrainejohnson9276 We have an entry way but very limited space. The closet is right there. Get a bin for the hats if you've space...I got those at JoAnns Fabric Store. In the garage, he hung a line, kind of like a clothes line, and attached the hats with clothes pens. When he goes out the garage, he can choose a hat and keep it moving. But of course, that hat comes in the house on his return and ends up on a chair. I've decided not to fight about it. Hats are minor. I save the "discussion" for more serious things.

Love your dress! I have similar bins for hats, gloves and scarves. Talking about husbands tearing through clothes-you'd think we've been robbed ha!

Hi Allison, thank you so much for stopping by. Yep...the hat bins do help. I must say, I laughed out loud about your "robbed" comment and shared it with my husband. He laughed and said he wasn't so unusual after all. I guess not.

I have a junk night stand drawer - I don’t know why it’s so hard to keep neat. 😳

Wendy, I used to have the same problem. Now, I just keep a few things in it that I really need to be able to find...nail file, ear buds, a basket with a few little things in it, but I stay on top of it. Plus, that drawer is small. The container that it is can only hold so much.

I mostly use a cup that has a matching breakfast tray a dear friend gave me when I was teenager. I keep my glass of water on the tray as well to keep the moisture off of table tops. I do all of my folded clothing so it stands upright like that so I can see everything at one glance. I'm thinking about getting a lingerie chest for our socks, underwear, and my few lingerie pieces (my larger than average bust doesn't fit most kinds and the big problem is only my bust is plus sized so matching underwear is often too large). It would also be the perfect place to put my sunrise alarm lamp. I need to get at least two new five drawer chests. I prefer them as I tend to store sleepwear, underwear, and socks in the first drawer, short sleeved tops in the second drawer, long sleeve tops in the third drawer, shorts and shorter pants, in the fourth drawer, and long pants in the fifth drawer. Daniel's is only a four drawer and the bottom of the last one fell out so it's a struggle to fit all of his clothing in it especially his thicker pants. Only one drawer works in the other one where I store our towels. Stupid inexpensive furniture falls apart after moving it a few times. Same thing happened to my bookshelves. They completely fell apart after moving them a couple of times. Next time I'm getting real wood ones as those are the ones that last. My five drawer chest still has all of it's drawers but it was donated to us by a friend when we first moved here. They are a bit pricier though so I'll have to save up to get them. Not sure about hat storage. I don't have any yet (just have a headband visor that I keep in my bag as it keeps the sun out of my eyes and also keeps sweat from dripping into my eyes; any liquid or cream on my forehead ends up in my eyes) and Lee just has a few he keeps on a shelf. Dad hangs his around a coat tree as stacks some on top of each other but he doesn't have a large collection of them. Maybe put a peg board on a wall and hang them on hooks. Perhaps looking online for inspiration would help.
