As a military wife I'm forced to pack up my house and move a lot. We actually just completed our 5th move in 7 years. My number one tip is to empty the contents of all your drawer dividers and storage pins into ziploc bags (or use plastic bags from the grocery store) and make sure all your organizing bins and supplies get packed in the same box so when you are unpacking each room you will have access to all of your bins. I had our1900 sq foot house completely unpacked and 90% organized in 48 hours.

After doing 3 moves with college kids, simpler the better. We put our silver ware drawer caddy filled with all the silver ware into a large ziplock bag, then into the box. We did this drawer by kitchen and bathroom drawer.

Maybe I'm a germaphobe?🦠 I wash out every shelf and drawer, let it dry completely and then put in shelf liner. That definitely slows down the process a LOT, but there's no way I'm gonna move into a house and put my belongings in a stranger's drawer or cupboard.😖

If you're renting a home take pictures of everything before you move in and after you move out, that way, you have proof of what the house looked like before and after you.

In addition to keeping your tools and some cleaning supplies handy, I also recommend packing a bag with all sorts of daily essentials that you might not think of, until you need them and realise they've been packed: - Toilet paper - Soap [even if it's just dish detergent] - 1+ handtowels and/or 1+ bathtowels [depending on household size] - Pyjamas or other lying-around-the-house clothes - First aid kit - Phone chargers - Paper plates, plastic cutlery, and Solo cups - Daily medications - Toothbrush, hairbrush, chapstick, etc

When we moved across country 2 years ago we bought an older cheap moving truck, drove it 3 days for our move, used it as storage for 7 months (we lived in a tiny apartment while our house was being built), then we sold it when we were done with it for more than we bought it for! We basically moved for free!

I never pack up the contents of drawers from bureaus or anything else with drawers. I just tuck the drawers into my car and stack them at the new place. The furniture is lighter to move without the drawers, and when the bureaus make it over, I just slide them back into place. :)

Going to a liquor store and asking for their boxes is a super idea. The boxes are very sturdy, as they held glass bottles. Perfect for dishes and delicate items. A liquor store near us sets all their empty boxes in their vestibule on delivery day, as they're onto all of us. LOL They're always gone by the next day! Some of them may still have the cardboard dividers in them to separate the wine bottles - these are perfect for stemware.

Congrats on the new house! I moved around a lot when I was younger and even my early adult years, my last move was 5 years ago, and it was my 19th address! A helpful tip I like is to use your towels and other linens to wrap delicate glass and chinaware and dishes. That way, you pack your linens and your dishes at the same time, the towels will protect your more fragile items, and it doesn't dirty up your dishes and your hands as you unpack them! And best of all, it's free! :)

My tips from experience: move mid week or mid month to save money with the moving company; remove the drawers from your furniture and wrap them in clear garbage bags without removing the contents; put together a shoebox full of "essential" items to bring to the new house and leave on the kitchen counter so it's easily accesible--scissors, tape, pen, marker, paper, aspirin, hand sanitizer, some cash, trash bag, recycling bag, and kleenex.

Any time I move I always pack survival boxes for my master bedroom/bathroom, kitchen & office as well as a moving essentials box. These boxes get loaded last & unloaded first and contain things that are essential for the survival living you do while moving and getting settled in to a new home. The master bedroom/bathroom boxes contain things like bedding, pajamas, shower curtain, toiletries, towels toilet paper etc, the kitchen one(s) have things like basic cooking equipment and spices, towels (paper or fabric you choose), a knife or two, cutting board etc. Basically these boxes contain the essentials from each room needed for basic living. There's nothing worse than waking up the morning after a move and having to open nine boxes to find your toothbrush, toothpaste, what you need to make your morning cup of tea or coffee or your router so you can get your internet set up. The moving essentials box has things like large garbage bags, a box/utility knife, basic tools such as a hammer & drill/driver with bits, a level etc. so that you have what you need to open and unpack boxes hang pictures, curtains etc. Also if the place I'm moving in to has an extra room that I'm not going to be needing immediately I'll put everything except furniture, survival boxes and moving essentials box in that room so that all the kitchens are stacked together, all the master boxes are boxed together etc. this way they're easy to find and access but you don't end up with stacks of boxes in each creating a maze that's hard to walk through and unpack in.

I moved OUT OF STATE and the experience is very different than an in-state or less than 20 mile move. I had to move all at once instead of gradually. So, I had to have everything out of the old apartment before driving 12 hours to my new apartment. Purging is key! I got rid of or sold more than 50% of my "furnishings". I was surprised to see how well I survived after all of those extras were gone. As humans we definitely hoard far too much! I agree that labeling is essential. I labeled all of my boxes with the room and most of the contents. Great job on video and congrats on the move and new home.

All of my moves have been local, so I was able to use the "Gradual Move Method", but I'm moving out of state next month and it's rather overwhelming trying to sort out the order in which things need to get done, and making a list of those items that absolutely need to come off the truck first, which means they get packed last. It was a much more relaxed endeavor before, now it's "all hands on deck"...everything goes at once!🤷🏻‍♀️😬😵😯🤯 Lord, give me strength....and some organizational skills!😄

We've moved over 20 times in 25 years of marriage! And two of those were overseas! So, I always pack as much as I can inside drawers and then pack the drawers back inside the piece of furniture in the truck. Saves boxes and a ton of space. I also use linens as padding for fragile items. Dishes get wrapped in saved shopping bags to protect them from breakage without adding too much bulk. And, this time around, I've actually been saving boxes from Amazon and Walmart orders. Now all those boxes are pre-color-coded for me. Books go into Amazon boxes and kitchen items go into Walmart boxes. So, I can tell with one glance where those boxes go. I also use plastic storage tubs in different colors for different types of things. My kids are grown now, so I have one color for garden supplies, 1 for tools, 1 for holiday decorations, etc. Again, 1 glance tells me where it goes. And clear boxes contain all my sewing materials so I can see what's inside without having to try to describe it. For the other tubs and any re-used boxes, I tape index cards to the outside to list the specific contents. It makes it easy to know what's inside... This time 😉. I also use blankets to pad furniture and pillows to fill gaps in boxes and such. And I pack boxes inside cabinets and shelves tetris style in de truck and/or storage shed. I've become a pro at guaging which boxes will fit where. In all these years, I've almost never bought any moving materials. But, this time around, we'll be putting a lot of stuff in storage for a while. So color-coding and sorting the same items together is more important than usual... In case I need to get something out of storage before we're moved into a new place (we'll be in an RV in the interim). So, for the first time, I bought Home Depot boxes. That's one more color for sorting what I'm packing, and since their sizes are the same, they stack really easily. But, as others have mentioned, I'm trying to get rid of as much as I can, because that's the best tip ever for making moving easier! 😊

I'm currently in the process of moving into our first home (😆) and something that I have learned from moving with lots of movers a bunch of times is to pre-organize! I have a binder that is divided into each individual room, and each room gets its own color of construction paper & 100's code. For example the family room is green and each box is labeled in the 400s so the first three boxes would be 401, 402, 403. Then I reference that code number back to the binder where I write every last thing that goes into the box. Then I tape the box up, tape the right colored piece of construction paper to the box and number it. This way I always know what's in the box, and other people can't see what boxes have your valuables in it. And when we unload at the new house, I will hang up the colored piece of construction paper with the 100s number on it in each room so the movers can quickly and easily see where they go. And this way you know if your missing a box.

Great tips! One that I got many years ago and has always served me well is to wrap dishes and kitchen items in cheap paper towels, then pack them and fill in with newspaper or other packing material. It keeps the kitchen items clean and they can be put back to use right away with no ink or dust. Then you have all those paper towels for cleaning as you're moving in and setting up.

We purchased our first home last February, and both of us are over 50 yrs of age, so moving was quite hard for us as well. Having the cleaning caddy and tool box handy is a MUST! Also, even though we had help with moving the large pieces of heavy furniture, I can't tell you enough at how much the furniture sliders really helped. After the folks that helped us left, I wanted to move some furniture around, and placing the furniture sliders made moving/sliding furniture around so much easier. We didn't have to lift, or strain our backs, and life was good!

You asked for it, so here it is my Best Moving Tip. Also good for seasonal items. Lay out all the items you want to pack into a container Snap a Photo Pack the container Print the Photo ... plain paper, even Black & White go cheap Put the Photo on the container Now everything in the container can be seen without having to open it. Also, this is great for seasonal items. So it can be easy to tell which container has the 'Ugly Sweaters' and which has Grandma's Special Holiday Decorations. The tip about hardware with furniture, buy one of those cheap 15-20$ electric screwdrivers, and just screw all the screws/knobs/etc back into the holes they came from. So for instance, a dinner table, unscrew the legs, and then screw the bolts back into the holes without the legs. No risk of losing them. Then, pick up a few dollarstore screwdriver kits that come with bits, and tape the bit that matches to the item if it isn't a standard Phillips or flathead. This will save you so much time. No searching for tools or hardware. You just grab your table, untape the bit, pop it into your little screwdriver and put the legs on. Tape the bit back down somewhere inconspicuous and next time you'll be ready. It may seem silly to buy duplicates and multiple screwdriver sets just for the bits, but in the long run it will save you so much time, and you might not need that many different ones, and could get away with one large set for a few bucks! Hope this helps. This is the driver I got, walmart.. cheap and I've been impressed with how well it works. If you don't abuse it, it should last! www.amazon.com/dp/B0753F9HK9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_g.aRBbRZMSD90

Second, I had to laugh at the end of this video, when Charlie was working on the closet and using the studio light for a work light. You are not alone. We do that all the time too. Rick is always commandeering my studio lights when doing home improvement projects! Great tips. Always enjoy seeing your posts!

I moved twice in 6 months (with 2 young children), nearly 20 years ago and I was so stressed! I wish I had a computer and KZbin (and you guiding me through it) I would have done things so much more differently lol! I'm hoping not to move again - well, not for a while anyway! Mind, maybe it would be good to move to force me to declutter :)

The multi-colored duck tape and writing what is in the boxes really works. I did it when I moved my stuff into a storage unit for a while when I moved back home to save some money. I can easily go into my storage unit and find the exact place it's in. (I'm very proud to have my storage unit organized and functional. That took some work!) I'm excited to start looking for a home end of 2017 to spring 2018 time. I will definitely be rewatching the videos again when it's time to move.

Every time my family and I relocated to a different state or country (Air Force)(6 times) I had a yard sale. I purged the entire house. You definitely find out what you really didn't need or want any longer. Plus made some money in the process. What didn't sale got donated too. Can't wait to have the grand tour of your new home! ❤

unpacking tip for the kitchen. I planned ahead what items was going each cabinet. stuck post-it-notes on each cabinet and left the notes there after unloading, so the whole family could find the kitchen items easily. Then a several months to a year later I changed the places that didn’t work or needed tweaked. Enjoy your new home!

We moved a few months ago...a whole whopping 2 blocks! One thing I did was put clothing from the dressers, deco pillows and blankets, linens from the linen closet etc. into large yard waste trash bags. I vacuumed out the air inside of the bag, twisted the top and taped it down. Tossed those squashy looking lumpy bags into laundry baskets and was ready to go. After the move, I cut off the top twist of the bags and everything popped right back into shape, plus we had large trash bags to clean up the unpacking messes that you always get.

1. Boxes: If you are not afraid of dumpster diving, chain restaurants and cafes usually have a recycling only dumpster with boxes, or you can straight out ask the worker when they have boxes (receiving shipment day) and if they have room, they can usually keep them for a day or two and let you pick them up. 2. I love the set up priorities point - we did something similar last time we moved :)

My husband and I are retiring and making a long distance move for the last time (I hope!) across country to our new home in a very different place than where I've lived my entire life. I'm also coping with the side effects of my age and a disability while braving on with the packing, one box a day, at times. It's a challenge but I started early by purging the house while my hubby set up a garage sale. Whatever was left over after the sale went to a thrift shop that benefits a no kill animal shelter in town. So now I've started the even more serious business of packing and I appreciate any and all tips! Thanks so much!!

Love your videos - bright, and to the point. :) I have not moved many times in my adult life and each time was extremely painful and inefficient. So here's an idea I picked up and adapted from reading Peter Walsh (of Clean Sweep). First, try to develop a vision of how you're going to live in the new house. When considering what to pack and take, consult that vision. Does this item fit into your new life? This helps decide what gets packed. Only take with you the belongings that fit into that new vision. So do tell, did you have a vision before moving? Super organized friends seem to have that without fail. And I am betting you did, too?

I wish I'd had this to watch 6 years ago! I moved to a completely new town, handcrafted all the stationery (including paper rose button holes for over 100 guests) and planned and organised a wedding while fitting in work and travelling every two weeks to stay with my hubby to be by train because I don't drive, in less than 6 months (that included searching for somewhere to live because my husband is blind and lived with his parents and we needed our own home). I nearly had a nervous breakdown in all honesty. I did do the list and I made things for the wedding on the train but little things like getting enough boxes was near impossible and I ended up spending money on buying them!

I have to say that I think the absolute first thing to do when you get into your new home is to set up and make all the beds. Come the end of the day you will be grateful those beds are ready for you, because you most likely will be ready for the bed. I felt that our recent move out of our 3000 sq foot house and into a camper was crazy chaotic. We had things going to storage, (for our next house, mobile home hopefully next spring or summer) some to the camper, and some to a garage where we had extra room for things that we use frequently but would not fit in the camper. I honestly don't remember much of the last push to get out of our house. (hubby was in the house 30 yrs, and me 20 yrs.) We got rid of tons of stuff, and have much more to do. Thank you for such great videos. We also sold our old camper the day before we closed on the house. Yeah, it was chaotic to say the least.

Great tips!!! We moved about 6 months ago and used many that you listed here. One thing I did that was unanimously voted as the most helpful was the color coding with duck tape! Each room was designated a color (i.e. kitchen was green, living room was blue, etc.) I also made a sign for each room saying which room it was then put that corresponding tape color on the sign. Additionally, I made a few floor plan maps, put little swatches of the tape there as well then stuck them around main entries of the home. Someone could look at the map or one of the signs on the doors and say, "I'm holding an orange box. This goes to the orange room." Sounds detailed but it took hardly any time at all to prep that and it took all the guesswork out for everyone (including myself). Thanks for sharing your tips! love your videos! :-)

We are moving into a home with tile floors in 8 days! We are buying an all in one tile vacuum and cleaner to wash the tile and seal the grout so it's easier to keep clean in the future. We will seal the grout before we bring a single thing into the house. (I didn't word it as a tip, but I meant it as one. Seal your grout before it gets dirty!) If at all possible, the best thing you can do while moving is to have your new house available a few weeks or months ahead of time so you're not fitting moving into a few days or a week. We don't have to be out until March 13th, but we close on the new house on January 17th so we have plenty of time and as little stress as possible. Thanks for the awesome video!!

Some tips from my last ten moves. Make sure the moving company you choose is insured. Make a video walkthrough of your home to capture the condition of your things before the movers arrive in case you need to make an insurance claim. If you have a front loading washer, reinstall the retaining screws back into the back of the washer (Talk to your moving company - they may be able to provide some if you don't have the originals.) Plan over a month ahead, if possible, on moving / shipping special items (mower, motorcycle, piano, etc). And submit your Change of Address to the post office beforehand... you'll get good coupons in your first weeks mail for all those things movers inevitably need.

I don't have any children but I do have two dogs, one of which is 100 lbs. I knew we would be having people coming in and out while helping us move so I had someone stay with our dogs at our old home while we moved our stuff to our new home, since it was 2 hours away. That way, they're not in the way and you don't have to worry about them because they're being taken care of. :)

We made a state to state move almost a year ago. I got colored stickers, and each room had a sticker. I put sticker and a number on a box, and then put a sticker and the same number on an index, and wrote on the card everything that was in that box. It was so nice. We were were able to find kitchen utensils the morning after our move, plus tones of other things quickly, because I just had to pull out my index cards, find what I needed and then locate that numbered box. So easy.

I actually just bought a new set of cleaning supplies and left them at the new house to use there so I didn't have to lug them back and forth! We also got all the beds put together first and made them so at the end of our busiest days the beds were ready to just crawl into. I can't wait to see your new organization systems!! As an armywife of many moves, always pack a brew kit in the car! (tea, coffee, kettle, milk, sugar and a spoon , with either paper or mugs x) moving all over the place loo roll too. I use round sticker on funiture and boxes for the removal, so green sticker everything out of the living room, red for kitchen, and so on, I give the guys the a sheet so they know where to stick even have stuck colour card on room doors with blue tac in new house that match. I alway make sure the kitchen and beds are last on so first off so at least you have somewhere to sleep and make food or eat? and I lookup take place and put some money a side. Also removal people are happy if you water and feed cookies too and will go an extra mile for you if your nice to them x congratulations on the new home xx may it be filled laughter and love xx
