So, when the kids were little (until the younger one was in his teens, TBH), I used a wall-hanging Advent calendar (24 numbered pockets on a cloth background) as my special event planner. I rearranged each year (to get church/readings/carols on Sundays), assigning days for baking cookies (3 days, one for each different kind), making decorations, getting the nativity set out, decorating the room, getting the tree, decorating the tree, etc. And any extra days got "drive to see Christmas lights." And if circumstances changed, I could rearrange the cards for something that fit the day. Normal life went on, and I had all my essentials written down and tentatively scheduled.

It sounds odd but my mom used to complain about all of her good towels going missing because my dad uses them in the shop. I gave them a bunch of my mismatched towels and extra cleaning cloths. They are happy now! Good towels in the house, “crap” towels in the shop. Win win.

I've never done TBYH, but seven or so years ago, I was one of those people who didn't let people to get past my front door, let alone actually invite them inside my house. I'd been like that for my entire life (over 50 years at that point). After finding Cas and Clutterbug, Dawn, This Crazy Life and Melissa Maker's Clean This Space, I can say I'm never embarrassed to have people come into my house (and venture further than the foyer). Is my house perfect? No. Do I do an extra pick up prior to having guests? Yes. But it takes only about 5-10 minutes. I'm so thankful to have found these KZbinrs who have dramatically changed my home and habits. It has truly been life changing.❤️❤️

I am a special educator that works with students (and parents) with attentional issues. You hit the nail on the head! Everyone needs to trust this. A plan is necessary, a schedule is a must. This does not confine you, it sets you free. The brain dump keeps the overwhelming paralysis away. A person may not accomplish EVERYTHING on the list, but they will accomplish SOME things, which is waaaay better than nothing! The magic is that next year, the plan is already done. Change what you need to change, but the framework is there. If you think you won't refer to the plan, apply Atomic Habits (James Clear) principles by linking the plan to your morning coffee, brushing your teeth, etc. Keep encouraging all of us, Cass! Merry-Merry!

We do Secret Santa in our family where we have a family chat, each person shares a present options list and each person buys and gets one thing only. And we also share cooking so each person brings food to the person hosting. And we rotate hosting :) only the kids get more presents, but it cuts back on the expenses and stress.

Love the three of you. We are in the midst of transitioning from our home of 30+ years to a smaller retirement home in another state. The trip to bring my mother and our five animals was about 16 hours. The animals did pretty good. Everyone was and still is stress but the cats are coming out of hiding so that is progress… I have WAAYYYY too much stuff for the space I had never mind the space I am moving in to…LoL. But I reduced a lot before I left and will continue to reduce as we transition….trying to do it methodically, mindfully. Some stuff will come to the new house because I wasn’t sure about it…so I can donate it here as easily as the old residence….Woo Hoo. Thanks so much for being there. Christmas will be low key this year as we will still be downsizing and putting stuff away…

Until I could tackle my craft room, I made the “rule” that every time I entered the room I had to deal with 5 things. Could be trash, could be something I set down in the room rather than put in its actual spot, could be stuff to put in a donate box. By the time I was ready to tackle the room it was much better. When I started the room I started in one corner and worked my way around so I could actually see progress. By the way, my craft room is a finished room in a detached garage and I’m 71.

Years ago my BIL gave me an unused day planner. It became my Christmas book. For years while I was still working and stressed out it held, among other things, lists of gifts I gave. If buying Aunt Sally garden gloves is a good idea this year, it was likely I had the same good idea last year. Receipts go into a Santa tin that lives in the dining room so it is available for my SO to use. It (planner) holds addresses (I tuck new addresses in the front pocket) and up date my book after Christmas. Like Cass’s binder it holds everything I need for the holidays. Right after Christmas I make my budget for the next year. I make my list of the people I want to give gifts. I’m someone who buys a few gifts throughout the year. They go in a tote in the guest room closet (as soon as I get home). I start with older people whose interests aren’t likely to change and ends with kids whose interests change daily. I don’t try to get everything, just what I see and say, “Sally would love this.” I have very little to buy come Christmas. Over the years I’ve developed a loose schedule for holiday tasks. In the week between Christmas and New Years I make my Christmas cards for the following year, I buy a few “forever” stamps so I have them on hand for next year. I put stamps and return address labels on envelopes so that is two less things to do before next Christmas (I address the envelopes just before mailing them, in case addresses change). In late September, early October we put up our outside lights but don’t turn them on (we live near the Canadian border and it is cold in December). I write the first draft of our Christmas letter. Mid November I update the letter (if needed) , and print it. I do a few cards each day the week before Thanksgiving so I can mail them on Black Friday. Today is Black Friday, cards were mailed, outside lights were turned on, the Christmas wreath was hung on the door and the figurative lights were hung on the inside of the windows facing the street. They’ll get placed on timers tomorrow and the pre decorated topiaries will go out. Half a day in October and 3 half hours in November and the outside is decorated. I use Santa sacks (draw string calico bags) rather than wrapping paper and that can happen before gifts even go in the gift tote. This stuff didn’t all happen at once, each year I added something that makes December easier and minimally affects my life during the rest of the year. December/Christmas are now easy.

Wow, kudos to you!!!! I love how you've planned the season and therefore everything is so much less stressful. I'm not as well organized as you but I'm getting there. I just got a new refrigerator, and your fridge organizing video was very helpful, which speaks to going to the channel and looking for an older video about the content we need. Still, the best video of the tree (was filmed in your old kitchen before Hot Mess) assumed a full time mom of young kids. I am a married grandma who only has kids on holidays. A new fridge organizer that included how to zone your fridge and how to live with other adults/near adults who feed themselves would help new people in our Clutterbug family. Hope this helps someone else.

Best advice here - donate all extra Christmas decorations!!!! Donate NOW while people are in need. And I might add when the season is over and you repack what you did use, get rid of the stuff that you didn't actually love - at that point what is left for Christmas 2025 should be really nice stuff. I have a bunch of Christmas gift bags & wrapping paper left over from years past - I don't need it so I'm offering it all to a neighbor with small children tomorrow, what's left I'm donating or tossing.

I may not ever do that again

I put my cleaning routine on autopilot. If I do laundry daily and dishes daily. After that I simply set a 20 minute timer and just do what needs to be cleaned. Our home stays fairly under control this way and we have 3 young kids. It is possible but getting into the habit of keeping a decluttered home and daily deal breaker tasks (dishes/ laundry) allows for cleaning without needing a routine.

Cas, I just printed my organizer. Good job. I love the pages are not numbered, I printed extras for my need, left out pages I did not need, and can now use it and then store in at my desk for next year's reference. I use an A5 lined notebook for my daily/weekly/monthly planner. They are pretty and I buy them in a free pack from Amazon. I have a one foot long shelf where I store them, it holds about 3.5 years of planners. When a new 3 pack comes in the oldest 3 go. I find the planners from last years are great a great set of minutes that help my planning this year. I plan to start doing the same with you planner from this year, so I am using a 1 inch D ring binder. Hope this helps someone. ( I got my notebook system from the Minimum Mom during COVID lockdown, so if just one person asks, I will look those videos up.)

If you want to learn how to juggle five burning torches and twelve sharp daggers you should ask yourself one question: WHY??? Who is putting all that pressure on you? Just sit down with your family and talk about the things each of you really wants for Christmas: decorations, food, gifts, baking cookies, a clean home,... And then ask who will do what. Because if people want something they have to do something! If it's only you who wants it all and you have fun doing it all then by all means, do it. But if you want a relaxed Christmas time just let it go and only do want't important to you!

If your donations this time of year are going to the animal shelter, Good will, etc., then put them in bags or boxes and use a GIFT TAG labeled with their name. This way, you know where it's going, and the list of errands is numbered in order, so you just go go go. They will be done by the end of the day. Don't forget to add the trip to the dump for expired medication and other hazardous waste. When ALL of this is gone, go to your grocery store and other stops as needed.
