I'm organizing my All About Reading curriculum so that I can reuse it over and over again with other children.

I started this in our 16th year of homeschooling for our last three. It is the best program we’ve ever used for reading. Love it. I have an 11 year old who had used Rod&Staff reading/phonics program when she was 1st/2nd grade and although they introduced basic spelling rules she never really retained the information - so I used All About Spelling last year with her and quickly went through three levels (mostly verbal) and it gave her the foundation to be a better speller. Many “oh! That’s why!” Moments! I would love to see the All About.. series be used to introduce foreign languages because it is so thoughtfully laid out. Thank you for the review!

Thanks for sharing Janelle! Love your channel, you have encouraged me a lot along the way. I use the letter tiles app instead of the physical tiles and I use a box for each kid. When I am done getting all the activity pages out I cut off the cover of the activity book and slide it in the front of the binder, and use my label maker to write what level it is on the binding. This method saves so much time, thanks for sharing, our methods are very similar. Blessings to you from Michigan!

Great ideas!! Thank you for sharing! I should have saved the cover and used that instead. O, well. But I will go ahead and label the side of the binder. Thanks!

We also use a binder with page protectors but I cut them all out ahead of time and then I use a sticky note on the page protector for the lesson we are using.

Also, you could cut the front cover of the student activity pack and slide that into the front of your binder :)

Thank you for this! I just started putting ours together last night (taking the cards apart and everything). Great ideas for reusing everything! I have a good feeling that we'll be reusing it too. I'm so excited to start with my stuggling reader and the pre-reading with my upcoming reader. 🙂🙂

I love this idea. I'm currently using Level 1 for my 5 and 7 year olds and the pre-reading for my 3 year old. I do remove the fluency sheets and bind them. This has been an enormous help for me. I may need to use your binder system for the activity sheets since I will have four going through it.

I am just starting this with my 7 and 8 year old! My 7 year old has had trouble with what we were using so I know this will be easier for him. Ali Lewis

I just started with Level 1 with my 3rd and 1st grader and laminated activity book pages!!! I am going to separate the games in 3 whole punched envelope file folders I’m going to put in a binder. And I’ve started to laminate the lessons to do the same. They each have a student book, but I have 3 younger kids and want to reuse ANYTHING I can :-)

Very helpful! I will be purchasing this level for my homeschool group for next year. But I was going to purchase all four of them there on own. But now I see I can get one activity book and just make copies. That’ll save me some money.

When we did level 1, I did not even think about saving the sheets either! But luckily by the time level 2 came I began doing this exact thing. I have 2 binders though. I didn't want to use as many page protectors, so I have a small 1/2" binder for all the Fluency and WarmUp pages and then another binder where I put a few lesson activities in each page protector. This video will be very helpful for a lot of people hopefully! ♥️😊

Also, I use the student book covers and spine (I cut them down) as my binder covers/spine.

You could tape a piece of red construction paper on the review box! ;) Similar to what you did with the binder spine.

We use dry erase markers on the clear plastic pages covers and then you can erase them! For the times you would need to write on the pages. I appreciate this video so much! Thank you for making it!

Great idea. Can you tell me the size binder you just used? It looks like two inches. And where is the best place to find those page protectors? Amazon? Thank you again. Blessings!

Curious how you pair this with SWR? I have both. They seem to take quite different approaches to teaching reading! even foundations of teaching letters names or only phonograms, first words they learn to read, etc is all so different.
@JanelleKnutson
@JanelleKnutson 4 жыл бұрын
Chelsea Sanderson I haven’t had any problems using it alongside SWR. I started with SWR, knew child needed more focus on reading so added this in. We went through AAR level 1 in a week or so just to make sure we didn’t miss something important and then started with AAR level 2. I used SWR phonogram sounds and rules instead of AAR sounds and rules although I found them to be very similar and easy to adapt. We did SWR early in day and called it spelling and did AAR later and considered it reading on student’s checklist.

Hi Janelle. Can I just purchase the basic interactive kit (without the review box)? Will it be a success?

The review box is helpful to have but not essential and you could create one yourself if you need a way to store the cards.

Do you know if you can download the tracking sheets from the website? I’ve already started using the program and I didn’t think to make copies beforehand.

Yes, you can download additional progress charts for free on their website. Just click on the specific level and then scroll down to the bottom. It's under the "What if I have more than one student?" question.

Can you tell me why you switched from Spell to Write and Read to All About Reading? I already own AAR, but find it overwhelming to use with multiple kids. I have been considering purchasing SWR, hoping it would be simpler. Your thoughts?
@JanelleKnutson
@JanelleKnutson 3 жыл бұрын
I actually still use SWR. I incorporated AAR (alongside SWR) to help a struggling reader who needed extra help in reading. Yes, using AAR and AAS with multiple kids could be very overwhelming! SWR makes it easier to combine kids and (for most kids) is all that is needed for spelling and learning to read. That being said, I have switched one of my kids over to Logic of English: Foundations because it is open-and-go and has some fun activities for younger ones who need more variety and movement. So, right now I am using SWR with my older kids, LOE with my 1st grader and AAR Pre-Reading with my preschooler. Hope that helps.

Could you explain why you have switched from Spell to write and read curriculum?
@JanelleKnutson
@JanelleKnutson 3 жыл бұрын
That is a question I am getting often! I know it gets confusing as I share different curriculum and don't always get to share the story behind why I am using one over the other. I am actually still using SWR with several of my kids. However, I was not able to lesson plan for 4 kids that needed spelling. I realized that I needed a curriculum that was open-and-go for my younger ones so my 1st grader did Logic of English:Foundations and my preschooler is using AAR:Pre-reading level. Then...I had a child who was struggling with reading so I incorporated AAR with great success. So I am actually using SWR, LOE and AAR this year! Sounds insane but it has been the perfect fit for me and all my kids with unique needs. Hope that helps explain things a little better. ;)

Hi Janelle. I used All About Reading for kindergarten. However, i wanted to know if there are dragons/monsters in the curriculum. I am a Christian and I am sensitive to my children reading dragon stories/ readers. Would you be able to confirm if the readers are appropriate for a Christian family?
@JanelleKnutson
@JanelleKnutson 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are dragons and monsters in some of the readers. They are NOT portrayed as scary or evil though rather more of a funny, character. I can understand your concern. I wish they had chosen other characters (perhaps an animal) but it has not been an issue for me (and I am pretty conservative in my choices of reading selections for my kids). Of course, every family has to make their own decision on these things as the Lord leads. I hope that helps.
