I love this kind of video. So often, KZbinrs will recommend a type of organizer that seems good at first, but over time the negatives are revealed. Your experience helps other people discern whether something will work long term. I appreciate that you also always mention ways to use what you already have in different situations.

I am reducing the cookbooks I have by only taking the 2 or 3 recipes I use in each and putting them in frames to hang on an empty wall in my kitchen. It makes them easy to get to, adds easy cheap décor and clears out space.

I love the tip on how to hang sweaters! I swear I was just struggling with that the other day! I do have my craft paper in baskets and it really works for me. One thing I do that might not be a space saver is on my fridge door I have a couple of dollar tree plastic containers that I keep condiments in like maple syrup, worcestershire, sweet and sour sauce, etc. The reason I do this is because I hate cleaning the shelves on the door so its easy just to pull out the items and the container and wash that down along with the outside of the bottles. I find it so much easier than trying to clean up little spills on the shelf itself. Lots of good tips Norrine! Thank you!

@@TheCraftyOrganizer my spice jars are several different sizes and brands actually. It's important to me to be able to see what i have at a glance (they are in alphabetical order) so i dont like my spices in a box. Everybody is different. My cabinet is also tall enough that i can remove spices from the back row pretty easily. Maybe that's why it works for me.

You are completely correct about the cardstock holder's! The tote is also better for keeping the humidity from your cardstock. I recently bought an ac adapter for my Ptouch. I never worry about the batteries anymore! Ideally paper is supposed to be stored flat. It keeps it from bowing. The hanging folders do a pretty good job of keeping paper flat. But if you have expensive paper, I use a clear set of drawers and pile the paper up by color. In stead of S hooks, I use metal shower curtain hooks. They come in different colors, too. I use them on wire shelves as well as molding above doors, etc for hanging things. Thanks!

If you feed the torso and arm of your sweater through the hanger after you drape it around the hook, it will secure it on the hanger a lot better. Also you should really hang any heavier knits and open knits like this. Works great for sweatshirts as well. They sell clear containers at Harbor Fright that are great for small items. And lego.

Another plus for the metal racks, you can put wheels on them. Making them easier to move and rearrange in your space. I've been converting my storage unit to mobile racks as money will allow. I have also taken two units and connected them into a "three-way" unit to get the most space for the money. Now if I can just figure out how to make my own drawer units to put in the one I'm using for my crafts, that are clear, I'll be better set.

Norrine, I too love my p-touch. There is a function setting so that instead of using the space bar, you can keep it from feeding after each label. Choose the label button. Scroll to margin. Then choose chain print. After you type your label, hit print. When it is done it will ask if you want it to feed. Hit the escape button if you want to keep making more labels. On the last one, when it asks if you want to feed, choose okay. Then just cut your labels apart. This saves an enormous amount of the tape. Also, this label maker is great with batteries too. I use mine quite often throughout my house. I’ve only changed the batteries 2 times in the past 4 years.

You are spot on with so many of your comments. Usually people buy the storage solution and then find stuff to fit in it rather than doing it the other way which is more logical. What do you think about the cube storage wall units? I’ve been using them for my yarn and Increasing their weight capacity by adding zip ties at each join to reinforce the connections. I find that I can put a 4 ft.² storage box into 2 14 inch box cubes and I can stack them about seven cubes high depending on the room. It means I can fit almost my entire Yarn stash into one room, and given that I have more yarn than Walmart does right now that’s actually saying some thing. LOL Take care and stay safe!

I think what you are doing is a great idea! I'm always worried about safety, so as long as you feel it's sturdy - way to go!!!!! Another trick with yarn, is get the vacuum storage bags from the Dollar Tree - you will reduce the space your yarn is taking by more than half!!!! You can still break it down by color, material, project, etc.... and it will keep it dust free!!!!

I have used many of the items you mentioned in this video. The worst one was the plastic containers with the dividers inside. We had one with tiny beads that my kids used. I organized all the beads inside by color, and guess what happened? Yep, it got knocked over, the lid opened up and all the beads scattered across the floor. It was a mess! Now, I use small plastic zipper bags for sorting and storing beads. They don’t work as well for children, but my kids are grown now so I don’t have to worry about that.

I like these ideas. There are several that I'll use going forward. I do happen to have a plastic shelf unit. I bought ot for a different purpose. After it served its purpose, I found that it holds my scrapbook container boxes perfectly. I can fit 2 on each shelf easily. I also have a heavy wooden shelving unit that will hold bins that I can put my 12x12 paper in, 2 per shelf. It was free, so if it doesn't work out, I can always switch to an adjustable shelf system. I have considered a tall 600 lb weight capacity cabinet with doors, to keep dust off, and adjustable shelves. But it's $200. So I have not taken that step yet. Decisions, decisions 🤔 😊❤️

I have a couple of paper organizers, one has adjustable shelves (it is 5 feet wide and tall-from a garage sale) I take some shelves out and store my tall paper upright in plastic envelopes. I have a bunch of box lids upside down, now they are trays that slide into the space holding tools, and other stuff that just needs a shallow shelf.

Many of these ideas are spot on. But I won't waste any more money on the velvet hangars. The metal part that hangs on the rod won't last long. It rips off the lower velvet part & you'll end up with only the bottom part of the hangar, a missing top part & no way to hang anything up🥴.
@TheCraftyOrganizer
@TheCraftyOrganizer 3 жыл бұрын
So sorry you've had bad luck with these! I find that happens with the styles that don't 'spin'. The style that is locked into the hanger and won't let you flip it around break easier. Wish they would change that.
@cjp2274
@cjp2274 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the heads up about the metal shelves. I have quite a few of these. Now that I'm slowly decluttering and organizing I won't need them all. I was thinking I'd just sell them, but hearing how those have increased in cost, I'm reconsidering. They ARE wonderful. I'm going to disassemble them as they are emptied and store them for a while. In the past I've over-organized (for me) and then needed to spread back out a bit, again. I don't want to have to repurchase these at a higher price. If I end up needing the space where i store them, I'll let some go.

The problem with storing paper vertically is it tends to warp. The horizontal storage module keeps that from happening.
@TheCraftyOrganizer

The trick is to keep it vertical and close together so it can't bow out. Like using a book end so they stay straight. :)

I completely agree about stacked paper storage. I had my craft and sewing space completely renovated last fall including a walk-in closet. I elected not to change my paper storage for the reasons you mentioned. I have a long shelf in my closet with all of my cardstock arranged by color and labeled by color name for easy visibility and access. I did not go to the added expense nor waste space by changing what I had. It's perfect for me. Also in the closet on another shelf, I keep the patterned paper in portable plastic containers that I can set on my desk and go through as I create. It also helps me keep the volume of my paper stash from getting out of control because I refuse to expand to another shelf. Thanks for your great suggestions, Norrine!

The Brother Ptouch is amazing. To save on tape, type your label, click label and then Chain, press Print, feed ok, etc, backspace what you have written, type again and repeat the process, when you are completely done, hit print, feed ok, yes, then you can cut them apart. Saves so much tape!

Great tip about the label cartridges - I am definitely getting those. Also, agree totally about the steel b. plastic shelving. I’ve had both and now go to the steel every time. I got one on wheels for my whole Ninja Foodi set-up. It has a nice butcher block top but the whole thing was a little high for me. A brainstorm made me thing of using a pipe-cutter to lower the top a few inches. Took less than 2 minutes and I have a perfect height for me to pull the heavy, full inside pot out easily. I also use one in the back of an “under-stairs” closet - the small space made it hard to get to behind jackets and wraps, but a wire-rack cart and some bins - perfect.

those plastic hangers drive me nuts. things fall off all the time. I started using the velvet and I won't go back! for paper, i hate the dust that can accumulate on the shelves. Covered storage all the way. I also use the empty containers from dishwasher pods under the sink. Like you said, I put like with like-sponges, hand wash brushes, dishwash (Dawn), etc. It is easy to pull the bins to get to that carpet spray, and if something leaks it is easy to clean up!

Thank you, Norrine, for the great information. I have a way of organizing small items that may help someone. For my beads, I use food storage bags and some of the tiny plastic bags they sell at craft stores. For example, I take all of the blue beads and sort them by type. Each type gets its own bag based on quantity. If I have a lot of one type, I may need a snack or sandwich size bag. Once all of the blue beads are bagged, I will put all of the bags in a larger bag...like a gallon size. Then when I need blue beads, I just pull out the one bag. You could also do this with the same type of bead, like all seed beads, whatever works for you. If it is important, I will put the package info in each bag so I know size and where purchased if I need more.

Can you teach my husband to put his shoes on the bookshelf? 😂 I have 1 pair of house shoes and 1 pair of tennis shoes. My husband has 50 pairs of shoes in all types and styles. Then we have 5 kids, with varying shoe sizes but each only h is ve 1 summer pair and 1 tennis shoe and we buy dress shoes "as we need" because they just out grow them so quickly. I hate being the only one in the house that NEEDS to have things organized

If I could teach that, I'd be rich enough to buy us ALL whatever we want! LOL If you can get them to listen (I know.... tricky already) so they understand how that clutter impacts you - it helps them to follow through. "WHY" is an important tool for some men. The kids will follow, if you can get him on board. 💜
