I love this. As an Asian American, it is so so so important to develop critical consciousness and unpack how orientalism has impacted our external lives and our internal minds/bodies. Orientalism is so related to imperialism, and how we strive for global equity involves in understanding these terms! So thank you!

Dear Dr. Raja: This is so concise and thoughtful, as usual. Three questions: 1. Why did Said use Foucault and not Gramsci in developing his theory of Orientalism since the problem reaches beyond discourse and goes to culture overall? (Culture and Imperialism, maybe?) 2. How do Gramsci and Foucault differ in theory? 3. Did Foucault ever comment on Said’s interpretation of his ideas? Source suggestions would be welcome to answer these questions. Thank you.
@masoodraja3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I guess only Said can answer your first question. Said of course quotes Gramsci on pages 6-7, 11, 14, 25, 26, and 329-30. As, for your other questions I would recommend reading Foucault and Gramsci carefully to see how they differ, as I personally have not spent much time thinking about it.

@Kamran Bashir I personally like his courage to pose important questions. Other than that I have no views on what Islam is or what it ought to be. I only have what I believe in based in my own experience and reflection. If it fits in any religion I am fine with it but if it does not, then that is okay too for me. Those who practice any religion live in modernity. How they cope with it decides the kind of world they create. I believe in absolute equality of all people in terms of their human value. If that fits in any religion or is “western” I have no problem with it. But of course you can have your own views. These things certainly cannot be effectively resolved in online comments.

could you do a video on the types of Colonialism, ramifications etc? I know that you already do this, but could distill it? Also forgive me if I am mistaken, but Orientalism from what I understand is the use of literature and culture to characterise a native people, originally the oriental middle east, as inferior, unleavened by progress, and primitive. By doing so it creates a paradigm shift which is inescapable for the colonizer and ends up influencing his dispositions to the colonized through racism, violence, and oppression. I am writing an essay on colonialism world wide and ideologies which facilitated it, so If you could point me in specific directions I would be extremely grateful. Thanks, and love your channel.

Thank you. I suggest reading a couple of good books on Postcolonialism. I like both Robert Young and Ania Loomba. Their books are quite good. As for Orientalism, I recommend reading the book itself carefully. I do have a playlist on it but have only covered the introduction so far. The videos can help with basic introductions but for a paper, only a careful reading of the books will be helpful. As for Postcolonialism, I have quite a few videos that explain the field as well as the concepts. Please take a look at the Recommended Videos Playlist: it has two videos on Postcolonialism

Based on my research. France did a lot of research on Islam to improve Europe and create a metropolitan society. However the french have been known for constant oppression of muslims in schools and work places. A lot of them flee France and to better countries. France also pressures many muslims to leave their religion and now many Algerians have become atheist. The most important thing that France didnt focus on is fertility. Many homosexuals and other couples fear poverty and thus decide to no or just 2 kids. It's a bit stupid for france to support LGBT if they are shrinking and also they fear poverty but kids don't make you poor.

Hello. Thank so much for these informative lectures. I listen to them often. I'd like to suggest that the criticism of the concept of Occidentalism is neither strong nor convincing. A discourse occurs within a community. Orientalism is a discourse within a Western (educated) community. Did the people who are the subject/object of this discourse also believe its contents and characterizations? Did the Chinese and Japanese also subscribe to this western discourse? While the people of the "Middle East" may not have had the power to impose their own discourse on the West, could they have produced a kind of Occidentalism for themselves? Have the Chinese and/or Japanese and/or Koreans produced an Occidentalism? In her monumental work, "Taiwan's Imagined Geography: Chinese colonial travel writing and pictures, 1683 - 1895," Emma Teng excavates and articulates the Qing dynasty discourse of the indigenous peoples of Taiwan. I don't know the answer to my questions, but in principle it seems possible, perhaps even probable, that other communities have created discourses of the West. Certainly societies in Asia have stereotypes of westerners, which seem to be part and parcel of discourses. To increase the prospects for peace in our global world we need to be much more cognizant of the discourses others have of us.
@masoodraja Жыл бұрын
Thank you. These are obviously highly complex questions. I would recommend reading the book carefully and then formulating your opinions. Said also responded to various criticisms in the afterword to the later edition of the book. This is just an introductory video and obviously not an exhaustive resource on the concept or the book.
@davidkehler5669 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply. I hope you saw the addition I made about Emma Teng's book.
@masoodraja Жыл бұрын
@@davidkehler5669 Yes, I saw that. Of course there were other empires as well. But those were either pre capitalist or mercantile and there are works written about that as well. But Said is dealing with the order that emerges after the rise of capitalism. Anyway, I am aware of these debates but my point in these videos is to introduce Said as I understand him. Beyond that it is up to the people who view these to expand further. Thank you for your thoughts.
