I was like this too. I mean, I don’t just speak English. I already speak two languages, which are Bulgarian and Spanish, but I’ve kinda known them since I was a baby as they’re my parents languages so it didn’t really feel like I “learnt” them yk?? But I decided to actually learn a new language last year, which is mandarin. For a few months of learning the language, I felt like I wasn’t making any progress, so I started watching movies and listening to music in the language. If I happened to watch a movie or show in English, I’d put the captions in mandarin, and doing that for a month made me gain so much more progress than what I was doing before. This is what I really recommend doing.

Transitioning from one language to the next is tough. I write poetry in English and German. If I interlace German words into a mostly English poem, I have to stop and think... since the structure and metaphoric meanings may be lost in the translation. Jumping from language to language can be a completely different, complex thought-process.... and is actually more impressive to me than actually being able to speak the different languages.

Vietnamese will definitely be interesting to learn in the future. A lot of ppl don't know that there's a huge borrowing of Chinese vocabulary in the language. Lots of traditions are also similar such as giving out red envelopes on Lunar New Year and eating mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival.

As a fellow Michigander I want to convey to you how much I appreciate your videos, I live vicariously through you, and also work on my social anxiety through your videos by imagining myself in the same scenarios you put yourself in. It also helps with my social anxiety to see you put yourself out there and nothing bad happens. so it helps me build up my courage. So thank you for your videos! I also love languages and have learned some in high school, and small amount through Anime, K--dramas , J-dramas, and their T.V. shows that I can find on KZbin ( like love letter). My husband and I had planned years ago to visit Japan, but I got sick and started to have seizures, then after taking meds and them helping me I found out I was pregnant. After having our son I stopped having seizures and am slowly getting back to health, So maybe we will be able to visit Japan in the future. With all that said, What would you recommend for us to do in Japan, or really any of Asia, with a child. I worry our son won't find culture as interesting as we do. Thank you again! I Will see you in your next video!

I am in the top 0.8 percent then! Finally! ;) What I like the most are Anming's people skills. You either don't realize or are really humble, but the way you talk to people is so unintrusive and nonconfrontational but still lighthearted fun conversation that nearly all of them seem to feel really comfotable right from the start. I assume that has to do with great cultural knowledge about the people you speak with. That is a huge gift and I enjoy watching you speak with people. I started learning Japanese but it is really challenging.
