Germans are very receptive when you speak their language (I don''t speak it well). The problem in Europe is finding someone who doesn't speak English well (esp. in Germany-Holland-Denmark). I was in the army, so it was all English most of the time. I should have discharged there and stayed a while, until I got fluent. Alas!

I don't think that's unique to east Asia, in the UK for example when speaking to strangers for a chat, or even friends you meet unexpectedly in public, it's custom to keep it fairly brief, not overdrag the interaction & become awkward when people clearly have things they need to do.

For me, the shock or surprise people have when hearing you speak is not the reason I enjoy your content. I dont know if that is your main focus but watching and listening to you interact with others as people go about their day, seeing how others live, appreciating the work you have put in to learning other languages is what i really enjoy. I started learning Spanish a few years ago, and spent a lot of time in the country, but it seems the more Spanish I learn the worse my English is getting (and I'm native English!). My spelling has gone all out of the window, I'm randomly throwing in Spanish words (especially when there is a double 'LL', or rolling 'R's involved), and it just feels like things are falling out of my head! I teach in corporate environments. It's totally true that people have attention spans of a few seconds to maybe 1 minute. It's very hard to teach complex concepts now. I am very concerned about where the world is going right now. I have been studying the Korean culture, history and language for 12 years now, but I am 58, not 20 something. that means I have the attention span necessary to learn a language, I have always been good learning languages. For me, it has taken normal level of efforts and some support from friends or programs like she talks about.

Anming it’s just fun to see people’s reactions. I’m a native New Yorker and I always offer my help to “lost” tourists. Most of the time they are very surprised that a native is helping them and they are all very very thankful. My best encounter was when a European stopped me dead in my tracks & pointed up and asked what was on the roof of a building? It was a watertower which dots the NYC landscape. He got a history lesson and I got a fun memory! 😊

I live in the midwest and work with a surprisingly large Japanese population in my city as customers (I work in retail) and when I show them that I know some Japanese (sukoshi!) the reaction is consistently surprised most of the time. I've only had a few instances where they weren't super surprised and excited to talk to me. I know you want to do other kinds of videos so I will obviously support all of them because you were one of the channels that helped me stay on my path and study consistently for 6 months now. When I resided in Japan, you get some people who are genuinely (or feign to) surprised that you can speak a single word of Japanese. But most Japanese aren't surprised at all if you speak Japanese. They will be if you speak to native or fully fluent level, however, because that is pretty rare.

Nothing wrong about knowing that day to day usually the reactions are not as crazy as the best ones you share online. I just think it's natural that people on the streets speak the native language where ever it is in the world, so not being surprised about it is natural. I love how You speak all these foreign languages, which are indeed so difficult for people from English speaking or European countries, because they are so different. I know only two foreign languages, namely English and German (and some words in French). But would like to learn some more foreign languages in future. Personally I have a much easier time with Mandarin because proper syntax doesn't generally require such a rigid structure between objects/adjectives/verbs, so it is a lot easier to speak completely nonsensical sentences. I also have a difficult time using the proper part of speech, such as frequently using "wa" when it should be "ga."

A small observation I saw around the 3 minute mark when talking to the camera at night after leaving the small convenient store, I saw a guy in the background kind of following. Not saying there was ill intent but just something I noticed. He kept staring, crossed the street but continued following then came back to the same side of the street. 😮

I think Xiaoma often receives surprised reactions, and this has become a defining characteristic of the 'white-person-speaks-an-Asian-language' genre on KZbin. However, his setting in New York is somewhat unique. There's a substantial number of Chinese speakers there, allowing some to get by without ever learning English. Yet, they're in a foreign country, surrounded by people who don't speak their language, which must be quite isolating. When they see a white person, they might automatically assume there will be a communication barrier. I had a similar experience when I spoke Thai with a Thai person in Europe, who had limited English proficiency. However, I never received the same reaction when speaking Thai in Thailand.

Upper-ish intermediate Korean speaker here. I think the more important takeaway from videos like this is that speaking the language allows you ACTUALLY communicate with more people, more meaningfully and deeply. Theres some conversations, relationships and even friendships that would have never happened in my life had I not been able to speak Korean. While the shock value is always entertaining, the real value does come from being able to make connections with people that you otherwise could never have. PS. The true TRUE mark of a good speaker is when you dont get complimented at all and they just start talking with you naturally. So Anming, 90% of your conversations being boring means that youre doing a fantastic job lol.

i think in korea (at least in seoul) theres an increase in tourism and language students not to mention kpop and kdrama popularity, so its no longer surprising. i only get complimented in smaller cities or outside of korea. and mostly from shopkeeps i said thank you to, not the people i have full concersations with lol i think its lost its shock value for koreans inside of korea at least. you always hear that koreans will praise the crap out of you for saying hello. and its not what i experienced. and when people hear of this theyre like "well your korean must suck" and it makes me feel bad😅 so thats what i like about her transparency. shes in korea but most of the reactions she showed arent from the koreans and as i said, theyre shop keepers. they praise me on language apps for texting well, but in real life i just get praised for saying thanks (RARELY) but not for having full on convos. but as she said in another video, its not surprising to speak a language in the country. but thanks to these videos and language apps i guess people expect lots and lots of praise but its not necessarily the case in real life. so you shouldnt feel bad when you arent praised in real life. not like we compliment the english speakers we come across all the time unless we KNOW theyre studying and trying to get better

Yes I agree, you can't learn on you own! I tried to learn Thai (my Mothers native language) on my own it didn't work. I was lost so I got a online teacher! I've been learning for the last 5 years, I can read and write in Thai. I wish my Mom could see me now, she would be so happy with me now!

I really appreciate you showing what a normal interaction looks like as well. I found out recently at my local coffee shop that a barista who works there was from Japan when we were on the topic of Christmas, so I spoke using the little Japanese phrases I knew and she didn't react at all either. She just tried to teach me a word or two more in Japanese. I probably was awkward and didn't pronounce things right but you've got to have courage because everyone has to start somewhere 😅💜

I get more reaction from Cambodians who live in Australia when they hear me speaking Khmai with my Cambodian wife. Now that is weird they think. One Cambodian lady looked like she had seen a ghost, she stopped and just stared, motionless until we moved on. I don't do it to startle people, it's just easier sometimes to speak Khmai and I forget that it's seen as unimaginable.

It's all real, regardless of the (none)reactions etc. I'm really turned off by the frauds that live off 'augmented reality' so this is refreshing. Great channel, thank you!

I just enjoy watching your videos. Just seeing home feels so wonderful. I know filming yourself walking around and talking about issues in Japan or wherever or showing specie places/apartment hunting might not be interesting to others but I do enjoy it.

Since I was a little, I've always said if I could have one wish it'd be the ability to read, write, speak, and understand any language I come across when a specific word or phrase was expressed in some way to activate it. I'd be set for life as a translator for people, dead languages, meet and talk with all people and travel. Mental health issues from life stuff deteriorated my memory a bit over time so I can't hold onto stuff the day I used to. So I enjoy videos like this for now and hope it improves so it gets easier.
