It’s maybe that this personality of letting things roll off of you that has allowed him to be with a spouse who is from such a different background. People who are sticky with rules from your own culture will find a faults in a foreign spouse because he/she has unwittingly offended them a thousand times.
@TonyRoss-n6v2 ай бұрын
My wife is from Japan and it is the same family dynamic as you saw in this video. I think it is a cultural thing, but teasing shows closeness. You are part of the inner family circle and can be honest about each other’s faults in a fun way. And I think it is usually the husbands who bear the brunt of it from what I have seen. My interpretation of the traditional Japanese family is that the father in law is the honoured retired man who has supported the family for years and is too tired for any more teasing - he has performed his role and is exempt. The mother in law has been the backbone of the family and is in high regard, the wife is the patient rock who supports her husband and runs the household, and therefore the husband is the lowest in the hierarchy and is under close scrutiny to ensure he does his duty to keep the home and family successful by not spending frivolously, drinking too much, eating junk food, being on time for work etc. just my observations. I don”t think the teasing was simply because Tommy is the child, because I get it too as a foreigner as do all the other husbands I have seen. But it is a good kind of teasing.

In US and Canada, "I love you" is of course not exclusively an expression of love. It may mean friendship or simply appreciation. In many other cultures, it is exclusively for loving relationships, and saying it is a very private thing to do. It's changing now in many countries such as Poland that are part of the greater European culture, but still clearly a new custom borrowed from America. It feels somewhat odd to me and my wife, being Polish-Canadians in our 60s, when a best friend says it to us over the phone - even though we love her too.
