Orienting and marking components is one of the first stages in making any project, and it’s arguably the most important. Because whatever you do here will be the lines and measurements in which the rest of the project is based upon. So with this in mind, in this video I’ll show you how to layout all the components required for this project with grain orientation and layout lines considered.

I'm honestly shocked on the amount of measurements needed. I love the systematic process! Great video. I'll definitely be subscribing. Thanks for making great content and easy to understand. I really appreciate it!

Great first episode, I can only imagine the effort that has to go into all of this. Maybe just me, but when this showed up in my feed I wasn't sure why or who I'd subscribed to some months ago. Could be an idea to include the trade mark "Estlea" silhouette somewhere in the thumb-nail. And perhaps plug this channel from your other one(s).

17:28 suggestion: you've mentioned several times to always measure from the reference faces. But here you're marking from the bottom. I know this isn't a problem for the tenon, but you might want to put a card up explaining why not.

Super inspiring. I started choping by hand but was too close to the edge and got bad cracking, not enough material left for strength as you rightly stated here. So, pissed off, I used my bench top mortiser for the first time (I've had it for a few years). It worked but not nearly as satisfying as hand tools. I'll probably sell the bench top and refine my hand tool skills. Thanks for the video.

The marking gauge you're using looks really good. I've looked at your tools list and the one you’ve recommended looks like it only has one blade but the one you're using in the video has two. Am I missing something? Are they the same one?

Could you explain the "reference face and reference edge" thing a little better? I think I'm missing the basis
@wrongtown
@wrongtown 6 ай бұрын
The face edge (see around 12:30 for example) is the edge that the cursive "f" symbol "exits" from. This mark indicates firstly that the face with the mark is the one we want to be visible in the final product, but also that the edge indicated is known to be square to that face. Keeping these two consistent as the beginning of our marking up a given piece of material, we aim to avoid introducing small errors that can have compounding effects as you base other measurements off those initial errors. If Matt found that his registration face/edge were not square, he would address that before proceeding. Of course, he's pretty good at this stuff and uses nice equipment to process his material, so he didn't have any nasty surprises in that regard 😏
