Origami (折り紙, Japanese pronunciation: [oɾiɡami] or [oɾiꜜɡami], from ori meaning "folding" and kami meaning "paper" (kami becomes gami due to rendaku)) is the art of paper folding that is often associated with Japanese culture. In modern usage, the word "origami" is used as an umbrella term for all folding practices, regardless of the culture of origin. The goal is to turn a flat, square sheet of paper into a finished sculpture using folding and sculpting techniques. Modern origami practitioners generally advise against the use of incisions, glue, or marking on the paper. Origami folders often use the Japanese word kirigami to refer to designs that use cuts, although the cut is more specific to Chinese paper products.
A small number of basic origami folds can be combined in a variety of ways to create intricate designs. The most famous origami model is the Japanese paper crane. Generally, these designs start with a square sheet of paper, the sides of which can have different colors, prints, or patterns. Traditional Japanese origami, practiced since the Edo period (1603-1867), often took a less rigorous approach to these conventions, sometimes cutting out the paper or using non-square shapes at first. Origami principles are also used in stents, packaging, and other engineering applications.
