@@miko1975guitar Barely. Most of the pedals then were crap. The intro to Good Lovin' gone Bad and so many "Marshall" sounds were just straight amp. Pedals are great, but if your amp "needs" them, it's not much of an amp or it's not the amp one needs.

@@miko1975guitar Yes I'm perfectly aware of the legendary Range Master and who used it, don't get your shorts up your crack. But I can do it, and my plexi isn't modded or magical in some way other than a master, but they didn't care about volume in those days. BTW they weren't "stacking the gain" using two Marshalls, they go in parallel to be huge, same misunderstanding about jumping the channels.

As the previous comparison between lower wattage versions, both are good for different shades; the dsl has a more compressed, tighter sound, with pokey lows and highs, very contemporary and useful sounds; the origin nails the vintage marshall sounds, more raw, with rounder highs and lows and good mids, optimum for classic rock and sludgier, stoner sounds; my personal preference is for the origin in this case too, but it's only a matter of taste.

@@FckYourFeelingsYT Hey Chris, good question. My style is not very heavy, I would say blues/classic rock/punk rock realm. I use the DSL with my punk band and I"m not using even half the gain that's available in the amp, but I like the different channels it offers if you have the extended after-market Marshall switch. I don't really run pedals through the DSL very often. From what I understand Origin is a great Marshall "base" but you may need a boost and a few overdrives to make it shine.

me too. LOL . i had the 20 watt Orgin with the 10 inch . i really liked the tone it had but i wanted a bit more low end from a 12 inch and the Origin 50 combo was never in stock so i just ended up going with the DSL40cr . i try to set up my classic gain channel as a slightly on the edge bluesbreaker/tweed type tone mostly clean with a bit of hair if i dig in,and i set the higher gain channel to sound like Clapton's women tone. my only issue with this amp is the EQ is shared so it forces me to use a pedals to shape the sound . if it had two EQs for the classic and one for the high gain channel this amp would be just about perfect for my use.

Actually I was surprised. I came to this thinking the dsl would bash the Origin, with both guitars. I was first surprised how good the strat was the the Origin. Of course I expected the SG to sound great pushing it harder, but I was surprised how the SG was with the dsl - more 'fizzy' - The Origin sounded more articulate and open tones. My fear was that the Origin range didn't have enough gain to give. (I write this as a player of 1959 Super lead 100s, 1986 50s and Vintage Modern 50s) but I'm now thinking it might be high gain enough to cover all styles (metal aside). I need a smaller lighter head to drag to rehearsals with a 1 or 2x12, so I might be after an Origin 20H or 50H after all.

Kind of hard to tell for sure, but looks like the DSL is in low power mode. If so, would obviously effect tone/volume in comparison to the 50 watt Origin. Did they seem to be similar volumes at the time of recording?

Why not the same position for the mic? You used the axis just for the DLS.

It will definitely be my next amp. I love my vintage Bandmaster, but there's just nothing like classic Marshall growl. The origin seems a godsend.

I have wondered about closing the back up on one of these like those convertible cabinets I've been seeing. I feel like a closed back and a creamback would make this thing sound close enough for me.

I prefer the Origin as the gain sounds more natural to me. I amazed that Marshall never put a reverb on it? I know the original Plexi didn't have one but for basic gigging, which is what this amp is aimed at, why not put it on. I think this is a oversight by Marshall. As much as I like the Origin from looks and sound, the lack of reverb is a deal breaker for me.

I agree. It's supposed to be like a late 60s amp with added features so a digital verb would seem logical since they give you a boost, internally jump the channels and an effects loop. I'll probably get one anyway.

Those tar back pickups sound fantastic. They were the stock pickups for Sg standards from 1973 to 1984 .

Great video as always, been waiting so long to see/hear something about the DSL 40cr.👌Because of a delivery failure (of course I sent one of them back, since I only paid for one) I recently had two of them at home and actually just wanted to check how it sounds when you play over two amps at the same time, but I recognized that they sounded totally different although the settings were absolutely identical. The one (which I sent back later) sounded very thin, perfect for clean playing with single coils, you really had that great strat sound, but when I went into distortion that thin sound wasn't really good and especially when it got louder, it was actually just awful, a bit like my old fender frontman 15G. The other one hadn't had that extreme strat sound (but still sounded great of course) but all in all it had a much fuller sound and when I got into heaver distortion it was just perfect. Since I prefer distorted sounds I kept the second one, but do you (or anyone other) has an idea why they sounded such differently? Sorry if my English isn't totally correct😅 Greetings Johannes

I have the DSL and it’s a great gigging amp. The Origin sounds better here, but I felt the single channel would be too limiting for the styles I play. The DSL loves my Strat!
