This randomly popped up in my Hulu recommendations and I had never heard of it before. But I like Neicy, and Aunjanue stole the show in the new season of Justified so I sat down and watched it. What a powerful movie. When I put 2 and 2 together and realized I was looking at Trayvon it rocked me! I think someone started cutting onions. The most enlightening part of this film was the plight of the Dalits(untouchable) community in India. India is a an extremely complicated place, with centuries old traditions, and multicultural crossroads. In a short period of time, Ms. Wilkerson and Ava shared the struggles of the untouchables in a way in which I had not seen. It was a really powerful depiction. I was squirming in my seat when that guy went to clean the latrine. Sadly, the highly stratified society in India, connects to the right leaning Indians in the West. I see you Vivek Ramaswamy and Rishi Sunak.

I'm still crying... Sobbed so much through the movie!!! The grief experience was so personal for me! And the grief I felt for every person who is dehumanized in the ways so powerfully captured in the movie!!!! And the fresh dive into the other layers of what African Americans experience in this country - more than, deeper than, the better context to what we usually define only as racism. I don't know why I loved seeing the credits scroll over Ms. Ava's face. I think uts because of the idea of completion. These women going through very hard work and complex ideas from Reginas Boondocks Watchmen and Ajanue in King Richard and Remember her portraying a black women finding her own power in Lovecraft County (whole series and specifically Beyond Cest episode) I think seeing the credits reminds me that speaking is important but the discipline and commitment it takes to communicate in various ways is a birthing that requires time discipline corporation to reach completion. The credits scrolling across her face reminds me as great and thankful I am for Ava telling stories that have liberated folks literally (When They See Us) and figuratively (many of us who have viewed) it takes many hands to bring it forth. Thank you all three of you for your years of perseverance dignity power and the pursuit of understanding and well being for us all. Thank you for feeling deeply and following through. #inspired

Thank you for this interview. I saw this amazing movie last Friday when it opened in San Francisco. I had read 1/2 of the book which is deep and a book that you can't rush through. Ava is a master of film. You bring it all to life and what a wonderful story and story that needs to be told about Isabel. Wow! I loved every second of the movie. What about the scene when the black couple were on the porch speaking about how to structure the book? One minute they’re conversing in the vocabulary of the educated and then as soon as a dark skinned woman shows up they get real ebonical. I saw that as further evidence of the class divide in this movie. She wanted to us to feel the caste pain while at the same time basking in the upper class trappings that separated her from those beneath her station. This movie was trash.

I think that was the point. We’re all apart of a “caste” system, whether we want to believe it or not. We all have biases, buried prejudices lying dormant in us due to personal experiences …the reality is we’re all flawed human beings.
