Rev John Greenwood (1558-1593) was one of the two men martyred following the defection by Brown. At about thirty years old, Greenwood had been influenced by Brown's writings as a seminarian -- so much so that he resigned his Anglican appointment as pastor for a London church and instead pastored the Underground Church there, for which he was imprisoned in Clink Prison where, after seven years he was unceremoneously hanged. His wife, also thirty seven fled to France, where she died from unknown causes within a year. They were my 11th Great Grandparents. His teenaged son , James Robert Greenwood's baptism -- or lack of -- had been a topic of the inquisition and was a witness to the brutality of all of this and , likely under pressure, later recanted and rejoined the High Church where he and his five children were all Baptisted. He lived in London reaching the ripe old age of ninety. His elder son, John Greenwood, (1619-1680) was named for his grandfather, also was a witness to all this, struck out alone at the age of sixteen and made passage to the Virginia Colony John settled among the Choanoke Tribe south of the English colonists in Jamestown and was adopted by these Algonquin speaking people into their community, given the new name John " Big Man" Spemica Elene of the Cornstalk Wind Clan. His native descendents, all Christian to the best of my knowledge, have likely forgotten these men and these events but still carry their name.

I'm on a binge on the pilgrims this week. I never realized how much religion played a role in the first settlement. I never knew the pilgrims were seen as extremist in their era

It's odd that people thought that "God" gave them "instructions." This may work for awhile...until others disagree AND claim that "God" gave THEM "instructions," too LOL.

You might want to correct your historical inaccuracy. The 100 Years War was not waged bw the Houses of York & Lancaster. That was the Wars of the Roses, 1455-1485

Also, many historians maintain that Sir Thomas More or Cardinal Wolsey wrote the treatise defending the Pope and the Catholic Church against Martin Luther’s attack.

I just saw a person I know say that pilgrims were not real. I've no interest in debating him, and I'm imagining his argument relies on semantics. What I don't unstated is why someone would believe that.

I can appreciate anyone's "point of view". You mention one time "what the word of God says". That is what I try to follow - the word of God. THIS is what William Bradford and the Separatist's followed - the written word of God. That is why they kept the Seventh Day Sabbath (As you can see in William Bradford's book "History of Plymouth". You will also notice that they (the Separatists and William Bradford) DID NOT OBSERVE or celebrate Xmas or Easter. These are HIS WORDS (William Bradford's) - not mine. This was mainly because Xmas has NOTHING to do with Jesus Christ. Show me in the Holy Bible where this day is mentioned or commanded to be "special". Unlike the Sabbath - which was given to Moses as one of the Ten Commandments to be observed and sacred - Xmas is pagan and this day was observed even before Christ was born (this can be proven - WITHOUT the bible - check Wikipedia for example or other historical platforms). The reason the Separatists HAD to meet in private is because they were assembling on Saturday (while other citizens were out and about doing normal things). WHY WOULD THEY HAVE TO MEET IN PRIVATE if they were assembling on Sunday like everyone else? DUH. They would NOT have to meet in private. If they were "congregating" on a Sunday - that was expected. BUT - - - - They were not. They were meeting at Brewster's home often on the Sabbath - Saturday. Search history and this is SO EASY to prove - - if you FREE YOUR MIND ...... The Separatists were persecuting for keeping God's laws. Observing His holy days and observing His laws .....

The Separatists had to meet in secret because the only church meetings allowed were those of the established church on Sunday. If they were meeting on Saturday and attending church on Sunday they would have had far fewer issues. Is this your only evidence that they observed the Sabbath on Saturday?

@@DiscerningHistory Did you actually READ my message? They (Separatists) FOLLOWED THE WORD OF GOD. Remember the Sabbath day - keep it Holy. * YOU * are the one that mentioned "what the word of God says". And I salute you for that! Now. Back up your words ...... Are you aware of William Bradford's book "The History of Plymouth" ? Are you aware of his raising and when he went to church and his views on God's laws ? (Just my gut here - I DON'T THINK SO ....)

@@DiscerningHistory my evidence is what the bible commanded man to observe. Which is what the separatists observed. Show me in the bible where man is commanded to assemble and worship on Sunday. Where is YOUR PROOF of a change ? The Separatists kept the word of God.

Exactly! Keeping of the Sabbath was the main argument of the Separatists. Queen Mary re-introduced Heresy laws forbidding the worship rest on Saturday Sabbath and Mandated that everyone work on Saturday and attend Catholic service on Sunday. She imprisoned and gave the death penalty to some for Keeping 7th day Saturday Sabbath. Like William Brewster, History tells that he was imprisoned for trying to leave England, truth is he was trying to leave England because they wanted to imprison him for keeping the Sabbath and not joining the Catholic Sunday church. The church owns the media, and therefore owns the stories. Blessings to all who read this.🙏🙌😇

This was interesting. What role did the Jesuit Counter-Reformation have in the death of Edward VI? Their motto is INRI: (translated) It is just to kill impious kings. Because Edward was directing the church toward Biblical, reformed doctrine, which is opposed to Roman Catholic false doctrine, they would have believed Edward was "impious." As they were known for plotting and murder, one may consider they may have had a role in his death, especially that he was ultimately succeeded by a hardline Roman Catholic in his sister, Bloody Mary. We know the Jesuits were involved in the Babbington (and other) plots to kill Elizabeth I, as well as the Gunpowder Plot to kill her successor James I and parliament, and to form a new, Catholic government in England, which failed by divine intervention.

Interesting question. I don't recall ever hearing it alleged that Edward VI was assassinated. He died after months of sickness during which he gradually weakened and declined. Under these circumstances, I'd consider it quite unlikely. Thanks for the comment.

I’m sorry, but you are wrong. My husband is a descendant of William Bradford and Alice Carpenter Southworth.. We know that freedom of worship was the major factor behind the Sepratists coming to America from family papers. Others realized the financial benefits offered from such a venture and this became the main reason from this time onward that immigration to the Colonies really began.
