Ted I enjoy this style of POV drive very much, limited talking but the words you do say are often informative and always welcome.. Strikes a nice balance between the original formula of WR POV drives and the 'competitions' constant camera-in-face gum flapping. Thanks

Had one of these 325i models as company car in 1991. Loved it. The engine was so smooth and boy did it pull. Fast car in its day. Cost new £27K from Benham BMW in Stockport. Happy days.

I test drove a 320, new in 86' or 87' and loved it. the manual shifter was like a hot knife thru butter. It handled well and steering was good. The one knock I had was that the car I drove had the ETA Engine. It was unbelievably slow around town unless you got the revs high. Nice video. Glad I saw this. It brought back a fond memory. Thanks!

Isn't the ETA engine supposed to be more torque-y down low than the standard M20s are?
@gabepettinicchio7454
@gabepettinicchio7454 6 жыл бұрын
To be honest, it was 30 yrs. ago. I just know that it was very disappointing in the acceleration department ... about 120 hp and the red-line was well below 5000 rpm. I only drove it stoplight to stoplight and it was still a dog, especially having just gotten out of the old Saab 900 Turbo. --- It was a fun day!
@killz4money
@killz4money 6 жыл бұрын
I got you, it does compare poorly to a big ol' Turbo of course. I drive an E28 520i myself, so that has the M20 engine but not the ETA version. Now just consider that the ETA engine already develops more than my peak torque - at 1000 rpm! But I just find myself thinking, nothing can beat how smooth these engines run, and that sound... nothing will ever replace it. M20 engines are fine to put around in, as Tedward mentioned, but most of them are not racing monsters. Unless you have some fun with tuning a 25i (M20B25).

ETA engines came out only as 325E which was in fact 2.7 liter. The 320i sold only in europe and japan where actually 2.0L engine (M20B20) with 129 HP. I've been driving one daily for ten years now, (320i) revs 7000 like a charm. Kinda slow below 4000 rpm but sound amazing from 2000 to rev limiter. Real driver's car, European cars came stock with optional power steering and drum brakes at the back unlike US market cars but man, you do all the work and that is very satisfying. I wouldn't exchange it for a modern car.

This is just so more appealing than any of the new anodyne over-techy BMWs. A proper soulful straight six - to hell with economy and emissions. This has soul and driver appeal.
@dimitrijvolcov
@dimitrijvolcov 5 жыл бұрын
Funny thing is: the 325e was actually the economical and low emission version of the 325i. It was designed to rev very low (with torque maxed out at about 1k rpm) and consumed only 7-8l/100km.

Why such a low redline? Is it a diesel?
@killz4money
@killz4money 5 жыл бұрын
E28 enthusiast here. In making the M20B27 (or Eta engine), BMW wanted to focus on torque performance and fuel economy. In reducing friction, one of the things they did was go from double valve springs to single valve springs. That's one of the reasons the redline is pretty low, because at standard high RPMs, these single valve springs would be liable to break / snap. It is a petrol engine, yes.

the e has a 2.7l engine which is a longer stroke than the 2.5 found in the i. It has fewer cam bearings and single valve springs instead of dual in order to improve efficiency by reducing friction

The 2.7, M20B27 in the 325e is lower compression, only has 120hp, and a redline of 4800rpm or something crazy like that. It's a total dog compared to the M20B25, the 2.5 in the 325i, which had higher compression, 168hp, revs easier, and a 6800rpm redline. The B25 is a way more fun engine.

Not sure if that is the case... It has more torque than the "i" and likely a similar if not identical bottom end (a BMW mechanic can enlighten me here). I'm there's trade offs that balance out
